So Ben thornley has been in the news apparently he could have been the very very best, but who from boro has been hit by injury and had the potential to rise to the top?

For me I think Rhys Williams had endless amounts of talent and really could have gone places if it wasn't for countless injuries

Perhaps ruined is too strong a word, but Juninho 2.0 was never able to hit the heights he reached prior to Salgado's hatchet job on him.

It's hard to know how much was the drinking and how much was the injuries but Gascoigne although an excellent player should've been right up there as the best or one of the best in the world for a long period.

Already established players at the time of course, but Mendieta and Dean Gordon were never the same after serious injuries.

Both excellent for us before.

I think Rhys Williams could have been an excellent full back. Dont think he'd ever have been top drawer at CB or CM which seemed to be his preference.

Obviously not 'the best', but Alun Armstrong started off great for us scoring 7 goals in 11 games (7 starts) before getting injured. Think if he hadn't gotten injured he could have done us a job.

Marco Branca, though he was into his 30s when he signed for us I think.

Steff McGargle always springs to mind in these threads. That tackle on him during the Sampdoria friendly was horrific. I don't think he played much at all after that.

Danny Reed was supposed to be the best of the FA Youth Cup winning group of Boro youths but injury prevented him coming through.

There was a lad from the Colin Todd/Lennie Lawrence era called Robbie Lake. I'm not sure whether injuries prevented him making it but he was on the fringes for a while and was expected to have a strong career. I think he had England youth caps and later went on to coach me during Soccer Skills '94(ish) at Southlands Centre.

Juninho was never the same after breaking his leg.

Woodgate.

Malcolm Christie must have had one of the worst records with injury. He now (or did) works as car salesman at Jaguar as my dad bought a car off him a few years ago.

the late Kevin Beattie.

Born and raised in Carlisle, Beattie was 15 when he travelled to meet Bill Shankly to discuss joining Liverpool. Arriving at Lime Street station without a penny to his name he was unnerved that no one from the club was there to meet him and caught the next train back to Cumbria.

I know his wife and youre right he never played again! The poor bugger is a Sunderland fan so things must have gone downhill after his injury.

Harry Charlton. Considered an outstanding talent. I only saw him play two or three times, once at Sheff Wed where he got injured, and years later at Highbury. An arsenal fan I knew said he was 'your Liam Brady'. I had to explain that Charlton wasn't a teenager.

Ian Bailey. Never the same after Bruce Rioch tackle at Goodison.
