My assessment ; from Last night.

We get that early goal and Croatia were all at sea with little confidence and virtually zero attacking threat on our goal. What we lacked was that killer instinct ; When Harry Kane got that chance ; 2 bites at the cherry ; those don’t come along again. That chance goes in and Croatia would’ve collapsed – they were already all over the place and couldn’t cope with our movement.
Croatia somehow got in to half time only 1-0 down and their manager would’ve been saying.

You are still in this ; they (England) don’t know how to finish this off but we can with our experience here. Get a goal and they will panic. (that’s what I’d be saying to them if they were my players)

They came out after half time with a spring in their step after a ‘get out of jail free card’ their manager reminded them they were lucky and now was the chance to use that luck.

As we gradually retreated into our shell it gave them even more confidence and their experienced players knew how to have that killer instinct – and used it.

Gutted really…..that chance for Kane.

I’m telling you now - France will batter them - like we should’ve done.

Pretty much. They pushed up on our defence in the second half and we ended up reverting to long balls and not keeping the ball. So much for the tired old legs. Wonder what they put in their half time cuppa? (JOKE). If Kane or Lingard got the second goal...if, if, if. That's the game...fine lines.

We played a lot of right sided long balls in the first half that kept them on the back foot. Moving Rebic to the left stifled us and improved both attacking sides. We could have still tried the wide long balls as their wing backs pushed up but most things went ineffectively to Kane in the middle.

We could have tried to play football out of our half but don't have the players to do it against a pressing side.

Kane and Ali being well less than 100% is what did for us.

Should have been Delph for Ali at half time. Towards the end of the first half they had worked out that if they pushed their two wide men high up the pitch and asked them to come inside then they would take our wing backs with them and leave a gap for their full backs to exploit. This essentially gave them five in midfield against our three with Ali and Lingard having to cover the entire width of the pitch. Every time they knocked it wide it was Ali or Lingard out there to close down. Ali wasn't fit enough anyway and it is no surprise that they had a lot of joy down our left side. Delph coming on would have helped massively.

In addition to that, Kane should have been pulled after an hour and Vardy brought on, drop Sterling into the tip of the midfield to sit on Modric or Rakitic and let Vardy play on the shoulder of the last defender.

I can see why Gareth kept Kane on, not so much Ali, but I think we could have slightly improved our chances with those changes I suggested.

Harry Kane was a passenger from start to finish last night!

I understand why GS wanted to keep him on (in the same way that Bernie used to pop up with a winner after having an aweful game....and for penalty taking if needed).....but for me, we should have took him off half way through the 2nd half.

Ah well....bring on the Euro's in a couple of years....and keep smiling! [:D]

jayjay - good observations and most probably what their manager identified at half time and they implemented it. Gareth didnt or couldnt respond.

Sorry but Croatia took control down the flanks from about 20 minutes in. We were still scaring them with Sterling and created 2 breaks where we had big chance to put them 2 down but the writing was on the wall ling before halftime.

Incredibly Southgate chose to ignore the right back in space since Young was going infield. He could have sorted that out at halftime.

Instead he swapped Kane and Sterling so that Sterling was deep and Kane furthest forward thus removing our biggest threat from then on.
