This is why I hate football fans. Some of the utter dross being spouted because they canít handle their team losing is embarrassing.

This team is too good for some of you lot.

Agree.

Those 'roaches' you mention will be in their element in some ways, they'll be able to point out where it all went wrong, and let us know how schiite everyone was.[:D]

But they pay their Sky subs, so not long now before they'll be salivating over the next Super Sunday.[:D]

Up the Boro!

Anyone with even an inkling of understanding football could see this side was never going to be good enough to win a tournament as big as the World Cup. We just have not got the quality to do so - ah well never mind, at least lots of easy to please numpties got to throw their lager around for a few games

I was actually more heartbroken last night than I was at Wembley in 2015.

At Wembley we were never in the game and shown no signs of getting a goal, whereas last night we were so close. Another chance goes in during that first half and we're in a much more comfortable position and confident of getting into a World Cup Final.

I'm gutted we didn't make the final, though not as half as gutted as I was after Italia 90 or Euro 96 (maybe just age).

In truth, the team did quite well but we weren't quite good enough to win the trophy. What's wrong with pointing that out?

Well done Sir Gareth and his England squad. The first squad since 1990 that gave a tournament a good go. The hurt will soon go, but the pride will remain. Well done, let the hurt be your driver for the Euroís

"In truth, the team did quite well but we weren't quite good enough to win the trophy. What's wrong with pointing that out?"

Absolutely nothing wrong with a bit of critical analysis but some folk have a complete lack of perspective and are going overboard with their criticism of a young squad with their best football still ahead of them. I really hope these people aren't parents.

Can't really agree with anything VerymuchITK said here. Team we could and should have beat? First half performance maybe but look at their experience compared to ours. They haven't hit top form, granted but it's no shame at all to lose to such a talented Croatia side.

Foo - fair enough, I'm not sure its really a reflection of anyone's parental traits though.

Small_town - They're a nation smaller than Ireland. Of course we should expect to beat them. That doesn't we always will, but we should expect to.

Population is not the be all of ranking. You only have to look at the population of New Zealand in rugby terms to understand that.

Of course, population is nothing to do with ranking, but it is a barometer of who you should 'expect' to beat, in a sport that is by far the most popular and resourced in both countries.

New Zealand re rugby is a terrible example because it is the only country in the world, other than probably the tiny Fiji, where rugby union is the most popular sport, or anything close to it.

ATypical Boro. they may well be a nation smaller than Ireland, but have you not seen the talent they have in the squad?

On paper they are WAY above England. I'm pretty sure the commentator said Modric alone has more major trophies than the whole of the England squad.

Lord knows I'm not the biggest football fan but even I know names like Mandzukic, Modric and Rakitic are names to worry about.

Fact is, Croatia have always produced fantastic players for such a small nation.

Atypical. There are more rugby union players in the US than NZ and besides the point is NZ are so good because of their coaching ethos and love for the sport - itís a religion. And that is what makes Croatia such a stronger country than their small population suggests.

Croatia reached the semi finals in 1998. In footballing terms they rank as high as us in terms of ability and modern heritage.

We did well to reach the semi final - of course we frickin did.
We battered them first half then......
Weíve had 6 shots on target in 10 hours of football - against mostly (just about) Ďdecentí sides.

Population of places doesn't really have a great reflection on sporting ability in a particular area and it's silly to use it as such. Things such as heritage and infrastructure come in to play.

Croatia have always produced excellent players (Yugoslavia have had some good teams too back in the day, wonder how many of their players were Croats)

Good job Atypical doesn't follow motor racing: "Why would you employ a Finnish racing driver? They only have a population of 5.5 million"

Itís silly in one sense - that Croatia have some very good players indeed (much better than some or ours) and are a good team.

It begs a bigger question - why canít a football mad country more than 10 times the size produce better players.[?]

Is there a difference here between regular football fans and more casual World Cup fans?

As a long term football fan, Iím just about over what happened yesterday and looking forward to the new season. Defeat is all part of football: follow a team long enough and it will happen. Iíd guess Iím not alone in this.

To those who donít usually follow it, and have been swept up in it, this is a fairly new experience. Many will take it hard and walk away. Some will think the highs were worth it and become more regular fans.

"ATypical Boro. they may well be a nation smaller than Ireland, but have you not seen the talent they have in the squad?"

Yes I've seen it. The point is that we, given how rich we are, how much we invest in football, and how big our talent pool is, *should* be superior to them. Of course they will beat us on occasion, but I'm sure Man City expect to beat Everton etc, for the same reason despite Everton having some talented players.

"On paper they are WAY above England. I'm pretty sure the commentator said Modric alone has more major trophies than the whole of the England squad."

Man for man that's not true at all. They have 2 world class players, a few other good players, and a few who wouldn't get in most PL teams.

"Fact is, Croatia have always produced fantastic players for such a small nation."

I don't dispute that, but that is exactly my point. If they win the world cup it will be a remarkable achievement, and all other large nations should look on with envy and take note.

"Atypical. There are more rugby union players in the US than NZ and besides the point is NZ are so good because of their coaching ethos and love for the sport - itís a religion. And that is what makes Croatia such a stronger country than their small population suggests.

I agree, Croatia have done brilliantly. That's my point. Doesn't mean we shouldn't be disappointed to lose to them though, and feel we should have beaten them. I doubt many of those players in the US really care about rugby union though, most of them would rather be NFL players and that is part of the reason they're rubbish at rugby union. Rugby Union is a religion in NZ, heavily invested in above all else. I doubt if it is anywhere else in the world to the same level per head, but that said they still do well to produce great sides.

"Population of places doesn't really have a great reflection on sporting ability in a particular area and it's silly to use it as such."

Really? Have you checked that against world cup winners of the past? There have been 9 winners, and they're pretty much the 8 largest, non-communist nations who prioritise and invest in football plus Uruguay, who did well to win 2 world cups but both of them were in very strange circumstances with nations pulling out etc (without taking too much away, they're the outlier).

"Things such as heritage and infrastructure come in to play."

Yes of course, our footballing heritage and infrastructure is of an extremely high standard though, so not sure what your point is, we're hardly footballing minnows.

"Good job Atypical doesn't follow motor racing: "Why would you employ a Finnish racing driver? They only have a population of 5.5 million"

Its an individual sport, not a team sport. You've clearly missed the point entirely, but crack on.
