His midfield was being over run from the 20th minute of the first half and did nothing about it and Rashford is a waste of space.

We move on and aim for the Euro's and 2022. With Sir Gareth at the helm we'll win at least one. A few new faces and with the experience gained we will progress.

That’s it.

Midfield was being overran, front four were anonymous, Kane was barely moving, Alli couldn’t be found and his move is to take off Sterling. The only player causing them problems.

His next subs, Rose for Young and Dier for Henderson. What does that do for creativity? Absolutely nothing.

He only addressed the problem when we went 2-1 down in extra time.

Come on, there's not quite the depth of quality on the bench though is there?

We don't have a Modric or a Rakitic in our midfield.

Played well in the first half and could have been 2 or 3 up. They upped their work rate so much in the 2nd, closed us down and stopped us playing, we just couldn't keep the ball.

We actually seemed to settle and get back into it in the 1st half of extra time but then the goal killed us.

Think it was a bit niave, but you know he's got age on his side.

The point I was really making initially is he comes across as a gent and a tip guy, but yes I would say even in the second half me and my mate were messaging saying Kane looks Foooked but he wouldn't take him off and we thought before the end of game commentary he was carrying a knock.

The wings especially the left were getting over ran and Ali just disnt seem to understand he needed to cover.

Missed opportunities

Exactly. He was able to develop a team, team spirit, togetherness...…. something we haven't always had at previous tournaments. Yes, we had an easier run but he did well with the players available. Look at the midfield. It does not have a Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, or Beckham in there.

As I have said constantly Southgate will never be a top class manager, I really don’t see much different now to the manager we saw when he was at the Boro. He will never ever get a job at a top league club and I doubt very much he will be England manger come the next World Cup

It appears obvious to me that hes moved on from his boro days.

Hes brought a lot of these lads through from his days at the under 21s and the team play for him. He has assembled a decent backroom team together. He made some good calls like moving to a back three, kicking rooney out, playing sterling up front.

We played with a confidence that this team has lacked in recent tournaments. Two years ago we came up against a XXXXXX team in iceland and lost two one. This year we played a XXXXXX team and absolutely destroyed them 6 1.

He had a bunch of kids on the field against sweden who dont hold a candle to the talent erikson and cappello were able to field and we never looked like losing.

I think its a little wise after the event to be moaning about subs and what not.

Hes no brian clough, but i think he is a wise choice to bring through the talented young players who seem to be in the pipeline.

He's carried himself with great dignity throughout the tournament and I've loved his laid-back approach. I do think he made a mistake tonight taking off Sterling for Rashford, and Alli should have been taken off for Loftus-Cheek, but he's done a good job overall and is clearly respected by the players.

Explain what I’ve said that’s clueless.

Was our midfield not overran?
Did Alli play well?
Did Sterling not play well?
Did the subs Southgate made improve us in the final third?
Are Panama a good team?

Take your time.

It’s admirable that we stuck with the same 11 )apart from the Belgium game) but persisting with Sterling and Dele has ultimately cost us. If the performed to their potentially we would be one the final now. Same can be said for Lingard, and to be clear I am not blaming them. They have all been good, but they could’ve been better.

Hopefully Gareth stays and we build for 2020 and 2022, then go from there.

I do like what Southgate has done in terms of the system and the fact we've played it out from the back. If Big Sam had been manager I reckon Rooney would still have been in the team, and we would probably have had Cahill at CB. I think his show of faith to Alli has been costly though. He wasn't at the races again tonight.

Kane looked knackered from the start, but as said he's the captain so would have been huge not to start him. To not sub him was an easy choice as he'd have got stick if he did and it made no difference.

Alli should have been subbed, looked injured just before half time and offered little.

Southgate got the subs wrong, but given how poor the bench was I'm not convinced it would have made a difference. We needed someone to come on and control the midfield, but I don't think we have a player who could do that.

He should have taken Alli off for Loftus-cheek and replaced Kane with Vardy. Sterling's pace was causing Lovren and Vida all sorts of problems, so imagine having both Vardy and Sterling to deal with.

Not many teams have a player who can come off the bench and control a midfield that contains Modric, Rakitic and Perisic, TBF.

Name one manager who doesn't make mistakes? My only criticism of Southgate would be his substitutions, but then he's not really got much to work with on that front.

It's all very saying Alli and Sterling are off form, but who are the alternatives? He's done very well with a limited squad. There are young players coming through. Lallana and Ox if fully fit would both have been in contention to start too.

The only real difference in this tournament is that we got to the semi final before playing a good side.

Making Kane the captain wasn't a smart move. Front players are more likely to be subbed but Southgate was reluctant to take his captain off, especially in extra time with a possibility of a penalty shoot out. Kane was poor though, from start to finish.

Walker looked all at sea too. Playing a fullback as a central defender just because he can run fast is stupid. Find a proper centre back instead.

And persisting with Alli and Sterling when the pair of them lacked end product was stupid.

Finally Pickford - looks like a good goalie but does he ever stop yelling at his defenders? Can't imagine Maguire and co are too impressed with him.

Not at all.

This forum, social media and the people watching the game around me were all saying very similar things - Why is Alli still on the pitch (if anyone noticed he was playing), Kane is knackered, Sterling was our only decent threat, what are Rose and Dier going to offer us in that final third, Vardy on too late.

GS said himself that the England boys are no where near the level that he wants them to be or they could be - he has tried to start something - a strategy so that we can be competing at this level for years to come and for that he must be applauded.
England have an identity now and you would all be saying differently if they had taken their chances in the first half or if Stones header had not been cleared off the line.
Easy to be smart after the event - isn't it.

What amuses me is the way the likes of PAMH are so certain that if this that or the other tactic had been employed or different substitutions had been made then the result would have inevitably been different. Frankly it's tedious garbage. The game turned on a couple of mistakes and events. It's sport and luck enters into it.
