These joint bids aren't especially endearing imho.

Euro 2020 hosted everywhere.

WC 2022 in Qatar! Other extreme.

WC 2026 in 3 countries.

WC 2030 likely to be in 3 countries.

You lose something when its hosted in multiple venues.

Any particular reason Ben, when England has more than enough stadia on its own?

I'm pretty certain some of these countries bid purely to guarantee qualification. When were Canada last in the world cup? For me its not right to have 3-4 countries gifted a spot.

They're about to increase the world cup to 48 teams soon too which means that qualifiers are even less important, and teams like England will have virtually zero chance of not qualifying.

I donít mind joint when the countries are small; or even if one of the neighbouring ones is small and one large, so it gets to other places it wouldnít otherwise.

See I wouldnít mind England and Scotland for example, as Scotland will never be able to host one on their own. Or England and Wales.

3 is ridiculous, the distances involved are a joke, and the US and Mexico have hosted recent tournaments. It should have been Morocco.

I think it'd be a nice little unifying event for the country, and it would give Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland a chance to be part of hosting which they'd probably never be able to do of their own accord.

The increase in teams is mostly in non-European teams, there'd only be 3 extra from Europe.
I agree that they're going to end up with too many teams though.

"The increase in teams is mostly in non-European teams, there'd only be 3 extra from Europe."

TBF, England have only failed to make it once in my lifetime, and since then the number of European places has gone up. Its going up again, even with just 3, which means the chances of it ever happening again are slim,

But the quality of the tournament will be diluted if there are more teams from Asia/Oceania and North America etc, especially if 3 from North America don't even have to qualify. 1 of which is a country that barely acknowledges the existence of football and are likely to be extremely weak.

When asked about who they associate with, most probably say "English" (or "Scottish"), some say British (that is UK) and a tiny minority European.

So historical affiliations (and internal self interests) make a UK team unlikely in many generations but it shows how steeped in the past we are.

Itís quite frankly a disgrace that England has only hosted the World Cup once and that was over 50 years ago.

In truth we could host it next week. Most, if not all, of the infrastructure is already in place.

In terms of this United bid, will all 3 have to qualify or do they all get an automatic entry?

I've always preferred the idea of a British team anyway, the separate sports teams have probably been a big factor in maintaining separate identities, but it's easy enough saying you'd like a British team when you're English and the majority of players are almost certainly going to be English too.

Indeed Ben, but my point is these nations can't have it both ways. They can't say 'yeah lets piggyback on England so we can host it' but then say 'oh but we want a team of 11 Scotsmen only'. Thats having your cake and eating it, surely. If we submitted a 'joint UK' bid it wouldn't be fair to get 4 separate teams qualify. Its daft that we're getting tri-bids as it is like 2026 IMHO.

I'm not really a fan of the automatic qualification anyway, but it'd be hard to tempt countries to host without that guarantee.
It's all money grabbing by FIFA anyway, the joint bids are just so they share out the costs of having all these extra teams.

I presume all 3 of Mexico, Canada and USA automatically qualify in 2026?

Only upside of that is that it makes the embarassingly lopsided North American qualifiers more of a contest.
It was a massive upset for the USA not to qualify this time around.

ďIt was a shlt world cup in 94Ē

Was discussing this before; itís a commonly held view, but I disagree.

OK, England werenít there. That influences a lot of opinions.

The final match was poor. True, but that goes for Italia 90, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Germany 2006, and actually every WC final Iíve ever seen. Itís nobreason to single this tournament out.

Otherwise, no WC has produced more goals per game since Spain 82, so itís not as if it was a defensive tournament.

North America is, imho the right place to go next. However, I donít like the 3 hosts given that sat least one of them is one of the few nations capable of hosting a 48 team tournament on its own.

I didn't realise that with Australia.

Probably decided it was a waste of time and money bidding again, as last time they were trumped by Qatar.

I reckon it would host a great WC.

But I won't see it in my lifetime, although apparently if FIFA decide to pull the plug on Qater, highly unlikely I know, apparently Australia would get it.

That's why I'm surprised they didn't bother bidding for 2026.
But at the same time I can see they're logic with not wanting to waste at least another $46 million.

As for the USA WC in 94, ok it was a downer England failed to get there, for me it was a huge disappointment compared to the brilliant 1990 WC.

I can understand Canada getting it, but Mexico and the USA makes little sense to me.
It's crazy, you'd have thought the UK would have been a viable option?

Was Italia 90 brilliant? We recall it fondly because England did well. However, it produced fewest goals per game of any WC, dominated by 1-0 and 0-0 matches.

I doubt anyone outside of Germany, England, Cameroon and Ireland think it was a good tounament.

By contrast, I bet Swedes, Nigerians, Bulgarians, Romanians and Brazilians recall USA 94 as a better tournament.

I agree Australia would be a good WC, we should be going there instead of Qatar. However only Morocco and the American bid were actually forthcoming.

I do think the US or Canada is a good choice though. By the time it comes around, no one under the age of 32 will have seen a North American WC. The game is taking root there. The quality of MLS is still modest, but average attendance since it started is up 27%; however, due to the increased number of teams, attendance has grown by almost 300%

This will take it to the next level. After that, only China and India remain until its truly the worldís sport.

I donít think the rest of the world thinks weíve done a great job of staging past tournaments.

Euro 96? Half empty stadia (some matches attracted little more than 20k) and generally negative football.

1966? Late venue switch to AP due to bumbling Geordies, Wembley unable to host a match due to grey hound racing and the trophy stolen.

We think of these tournament as triumphs because England performed, but thatís not what the rest of the world sees, and it is their votes we rely upon.

Given the fact that it was britain that spread the game around the world, and our leagues continuing popularity at home and abroad i think its a damn shame that they could hold 2 world cups in the us, germany, france, italy and brazil- and three in XXXXXX mexico, while we have had it once. Spain being the only other vaguely comparable nation to get it only one time.

"i think its a damn shame that they could hold 2 world cups in the us, germany, france, italy and brazil- and three in XXXXXX mexico, while we have had it once."

I suppose you need to look into it a bit further than that.

Since 1966 England withdrew a bid for WC1990 and then again for WC1998 instead deciding to concentrate on Euro96.

We put a bid together for the WC2006, which you may remember was an absolute sham, was criticised by UEFA and FIFA and would never have gotten far as we (see. Tony Banks and The FA) stabbed the German FA in the back, after reneging on a gentleman's agreement relating to their support for our Euro96 bid.

So the only real serious bid England has delivered since '66 is the WC2018 one, which we lost to a nation who are hosting it for the very first time and had bigger brown envelopes than us.

That said. We have UEFA's and the German's support for a potential WC2030 bid, so fingers crossed.

Well FIFA have relaxed that policy now so rather than waiting two cycles, it's just the one before a confederation member can bid again for hosting rights.

That of course this means in 2030 England may be competing against China for the World Cup. [B)]

And other than 2018, I don't think England has really been hard done by in the bidding process. We've just mainly been a victim of our own arrogance, rotational policy or the European championships.

2026 World Cup will be hosted in...

Its a good point FH, in the absence of many other bids its hard to make a judgement on whether its right or not.

It would be nice to see another tournament in Africa mind, though I've no idea how feasible it is.

I suppose you could argue that the lack of bids may be a result of the Qatar fiasco.

I think also the 48 team format makes single nation bids harder, but joint bids are harder to organise.

In fairness to Morocco, I donít know a huge amount about the place or their bid.

However if youíre saying no to the Americaís, you are saying yes to Morocco.

Iíll stick my neck out now and say the next European WC will be Spain/Portugal.

Be very hard considering UEFA have said they'd support any England bid.

Is that the same FIFA who reported that Qatar would be a good place to take the World Cup at the height of summer initially ?

Also, Iíd say transport would probably be the top priority for a tournament where hundreds of thousands of fans need to get across a country, states and cities for games

"Is that the same FIFA"

No. It would appear you've completely forgotten what has happened with FIFA over the past few years.

We may not bother bidding, and even if we do, do we trust UEFA
