It's the first time I've been really excited about the national team since 2002 I think they could emulate what the Germans have done with such a young side, Gareth is starting to mature into a good manager it's just a shame we had him when we did as I think they step into management was far too high for him.

I don't think we will get passed the QF but I am really impressed with Southgate and virtually everything he has said leading up to this.

The team are completely free of any past defeats etc, Gabby Logan said on R2 last night that there are only 4 members there who played at the last WC, which is a big change as for the last 20 years or so it has been the same old faces every tournament, it's almost a good thing that Gerrard etc have gone.

I think in four years time we will have a better chance, these will all be getting to their prime and will have been playing together for a long time - and all the young teams are playing with the 'DNA' and are winning things/will be coming through.

I've seen nothing to get excited about.

Euro 96 was the last time I was excited by England!

Excited about THIS England team?! Honestly?! Your enthusiasm is admirable and I hope I'm wrong but it looks the weakest team I've seen at international level for decades. There are some very strong teams in there; should be a good tournament nonetheless.

I think the "exciting" thing is that there is so little expectation that they can only really disappoint if by some chance they managed to fail to get out of the group.

That said I like the way Southgate has gone about the job and I like that he has a young side. We'll see, but I don't think I'll get properly excited until the knockout stages.

Good to have some summer football though but.

There is so much talent in that team, 3 very good goalkeepers, some of the best full backs that we have seen for a long time, I think we are weakest in centre mid I don't know what it Is about Henderson I just don't trust, in Harry Kane we have arguably the best striker in the world

I like Southgate, close knit young team and I like the way they're attempting to connect with the public.

People's expectations were at an absolute nadir, and many are quite happy to continuously tell you how uninterested they are and how low their expectations are for the England team.

So any outcome in the coming month shouldn't be too upsetting for our fans, surely the only way you can be disappointed is if we go much further than expected and fall just short.

Somewhat forgiving group, and likely opponent in the round of 16, but we'd probably be playing Brazil or Germany if we managed to get to the quarter finals, so it'll be tough.

Excited is the wrong word, but Iím certainly encouraged by the job GS has done.

Heís built a decent young team with limited resources; I also sense that playing for England is now less of a chore than on the past.

Iím not expecting too much: young teams donít do well at the WC, but experience has to start somewhere. QF would be a good achievement.

The key thing for me is that the colossal burden of expectation isnt there this time. The press aren't talking about a "golden generation" etc, and they seem like a decent, close-knit group of players.

It wouldnt surprise me at all if they did very well indeed. I can see Germany not winning their group actually (Mexico are very good) - but regardless of that, England will have to win big games to progress.

Less pressure - a young manager with less "baggage" from having managed players at club level etc - a young squad, and no "Rooneyesque" injuries coming into the tournament.

Semi-Finals or better. Honestly think they might win it.

How can anyone get excited with Southgate in charge, we have heard all his spin before as Boro manager hes a complete bullXXXXXXter. Awaiting the inevitable quote about "dusting ourselves down" to again for the next tournament probably after a humiliating exit.

Light years from winning it but hoping we play some nice, bright attacking football without the crazy expectation that seems to dog us every time a tournament comes around.

We are completely lacking in creativity. Kane is good, the attacking midfielders are decent but not creative. Central midfield is very weak. The defense is full of players prone to making mistakes and a goalkeeper that has conceded well over 100 goals in his 2 PL seasons.

Southgate is doing very well and I think it's refreshing that the squad is not full of ego. The players seem to get on and look forward to playing football for their country.

For years many fans (myself included) have wittered on about all the same old faces who let us down in the past, getting picked on reputation. The same old faces are gone, mostly retired or past it, of course,

This makes a bit of a change, and they go into the tournament with a lot less expectation and pressure that previous squads. I hope they do well (obviously) and I have a feeling they may surprise a few people.

The issue is, despite the claims that nobody really has any expectations going into the tournament, there will still be big expectations for us to beat Panama and Tunisia. We were expected to beat Iceland in the Euros, and again the players couldn't handle it and crumbled.

I just think it's a mentality thing with England in tournaments. We have some very good players in the likes of Kane, Ali and Sterling, and I do like what Southgate has been doing, but when the pressure is on we can't cope.

Awfully pedestrian in midfield and there is absolutely no tempo. Watching them is reminiscent of Karanka's Boro. We have a smattering of quality but really way short compared to other teams. I hope Gareth pulls it off and surprises a few people, including me.

I think if Southgate is allowed to continue to develop a young squad, promote u-21s who are good enough and build a team for the next world cup we could be on to something. The next Euros will be a good measure as we should be there or there about.

People only got excited by Euro 96 and Italia 90 once we got through the groups. Three lions didnít really take off until AFTER the Scotland win (2nd game) but the Dutch game got people really going a week and half after tournament started. Same with italia 90. The win v Egypt (3rd game) was nothing but it was the Cameroon game that got people excited.

Point is, no one was excited until England proved themselves

i enjoy the way southgate has set out the team, he has technically gifted players in every position for the his tactics. Defenders who are comfortable on the ball, can pass, and can step forward effectively when needed.

the attitude is right, there is a clear plan, so overall best balanced and prepared squad for many years.

looking forward to see what they can do

Weíre in a transition period now with the last few regulars from the John Terry captaincy era left with a fairly young squad.

I think weíll be in a much better position in 4-6 years time when the young lads who have been sweeping up the youth tournaments in recent years will be hitting their peak years. There are a few young players who donít just have the potential, they also have the winning mentality and can compete with the other top teams technically.

I agree creativity in the middle is a problem. That said, I canít really fault GS for that .
Ross Berkley has stagnated badly in recent seasons.
Lallana I like but heís hardly played due to injury
I quite like Oxlade-Chamberlain, who seemed to be hitting top form when he was injured.

Whoíse left after that? Wilkshire has a few fans, but I think more agree he wasnít worth his place.

Have I missed anyone?

So yes, weíre lacking in that department, but I donít think thatís the managers fault.

"Have I missed anyone?"
Shelvey, Lookman, Sancho, Albrighton.

To take a risk on someone like Alexander Arnold, when we're sufficiently covered in his position, and not take a risk on someone who offers creativity I really cannot understand.

Shelvey is a decent shout, but is seen as a loose cannon. I know ast managers are criticised for passing on those, however heís not in the Le Tissier/Hoddle class is he? I can accept that he may deserve a place in the squad, but he is not the difference between success and failure.

Lookman featured in 7 PL matches last season: so has yet to justify a call up. More of a striker anyway.

Albrightonís more of a wideman and weíre ok in that position.

I suppose Drinkwater was a popular shout 2 years ago but has vanished since.

"however heís not in the Le Tissier/Hoddle class is he?"

Well if that's the standard for getting into this England team then we've completely failed as not a single one is fit the lace their boots.

However, as it isn't, it would probably make sense to take someone with what he offers as there isn't really anyone else in are squad that does. We're really lacking there.

And as for Lookman; he has been playing in Germany since January and has done very well. He's also not a striker.

Albrighton is a outright winger. Which other of his type do we have in the squad?

I like the way Southgate has them playing. Weve got some good footballers at the back and we build possession really well. That first goal the other night must have been 50 odd passes easy.

I think we seem a better team technically than we were and less phased by expectation as there isn't any.

I think we're a little too weak in the centre back position and the middle of the park. Attacking wise I think we're fine but I'm not sure how well we'll control games when we're playing the real top teams.

I think a quarter final would be a good achievement with that team but certainly could go further.

I think teams with similar ability players have gone to semi's and finals before.

At the end of the day, he doesn't have to achieve much to do better than the last couple of world cups!
