Julen Lopetegui took the Real Madrid job after the World Cup, but didn't get permission from the Spanish FA, so they could sack him just days before their first World Cup game.

Apparently 6 Madrid players knew he had the job, and then a Spanish non-Madrid player got wind of it, and Lopetegui told Madrid this, and Madrid announced it before anyone else released the news.

Surely for Spain it's footbaling suicide?

Could be suicide to keep him.

Interesting one this! I've backed em as well.

I thought they lacked firepower to win it, pretty sure this won't help. Glad I've left them well alone.

Be interesting to see who they have lined up to replace him with only 1 day to go!

Probably the assistant.

Yeah it will be Hierro.

My reasons for backing them are basically this:

Germany - teams never retain it
France - high expectations usually don't match them
Argentina - see France
Brazil - too dependent on Neymar

They were the only ones left.

I would have put against Spain, ageing team, lack firepower. They would have been one of the first I ruled out before looking at the others.

I agree with Exiled, too many players are too far over the hill.

I don't think you can write off Brazil with Coutinho, Firmino, Jesus on top of Neymar.

France. Its got to all click but there's a team there on their day that can destroy any of the other teams.

My choice was based on what level they can reach, we all know what Spain could do in the past, can they do it again?

Too many doubts for me. Of course you couod say the same about Brazil and Argentina but I ruled them out due to over reliance on key individuals and Germany because they don't seem to have the strength in the team of 4 years ago.

I'm surprised you say that EIH, I think Germany still look strong and their midfield is formidable.

I'm literally only not backing them because no one has retained it since Brazil in 62, with Pele/Garrincha. I'd back them for every other reason.

As a dark horse, Croatia have a very strong midfield and forward line.

It was defensively I thought they look vulnerable. That was my reason for not being as strong.

I know but there will times when they could well get caught short.

On a separate note, Spain have actually gone and sacked him. WOW

Not saying Spain are going to win it but they have a younger average aged squad than Brazil

Serial winners at club and country, the best GK in the world but yes their forward options seem limited.

Crazy that he's been sacked on the eve of the world cup, regardless of him agreeing to take over at Real following the tournament.

Utterly bizarre that they would sack him for agreeing to take over Madrid - like cutting your nose off to spite your stupid Spanish face!

It really isn't bizarre ironops.
Once he signed for Real his integrity was out if the window and team selection would be under intense scrutiny.

Robson had agreed to the PSV job prior to the 90 World Cup, many others have done it. Seems bizarre to me.

Not on the same scale as Robson and PSV.

I certainly don't underestimate that, what I think they've done is underestimate his ability to remain professional to whenever their World Cup ends. One thing for certain is this certainly doesn't help their chances.

Oh I'm sure he could have remained professional, but the footballing powers have had to do what they think was best.
Pressure on them will have been immense.
I still think he would have been conflicted though, in a way that Bobby Robson never was.

I don’t fancy the French much; they either do well or bomb in the first round.

I think they have the toughest group and could conceivably go out early.

I also get the impression that a few of their star players appear more interested in where they’ll be playing next season too.

Brazil and Germany look strongest, but I’d love to see a first time winner. Or England, of course.
