Who has been the best PM in your lifetime

I have had

1. Thatcher
2. Major
3. Blair
4. Brown
5. Cameron
6. May

I am a labour voter, but out of the above I would have to say John Major.

I had James Callaghan too, but was only 2 when Thatcher came to power. Why is John Major the best PM in your lifetime? I accept he has been the most palatable Tory of those lot, but why better than Blair?

For all the things I despise Blair about (predominantly Iraq of course), when the Labour Party was elected with the landslide in 1997, that was the first time I really saw hope and felt that change was coming.

Those first few years under Blair were fantastic overall IMHO. Putting aside the horrors of Iraq, domestically he was the best PM by a mile in my lifetime.

. Thatcher - very capable, resolute but ruinous
. Major - limp
. Blair - excellent communications, best profile, best policies - lying, self serving fantasist
. Brown - capable but hamstrung by association
. Cameron - capable - job was a jolly
. May - very capable, professional - lacks empathy.

All have good points unfortunately all have their bad points..

I think if May had been elected at a different time she could have been decent..

Rather than the BEST how about least WORST.. even then all have messed up - imho - to a large degree..

I don't disagree with much of that Bob in a general sense, I don't for one minute believe Theresa May capable of opening a loaf of bread. She is anything but professional as evidenced by her ridiculous attacks and smears against Jeremy Corbyn after the last question at PMQs when he can not respond.

Additionally, look at any of the photos of the EU meetings, meetings with other leaders... she looks massively, massively out of depth.

@bobupdown - Brown is the interesting one. If he'd not hung on for another year and had an immediate election, he might have scraped across the line and done a decent job. Agree, all have their faults.

All have proved to be flawed apart from maybe Gordon Brown who never really stood any chance as PM. I think many would regard him as clearly the most able. Thatcher was destructive and the passing of time has shown that she in no way had the answers to the challenges of that time. She certainly shouldn't be described as capable. Her greatest creation....Tony Blair, promised much but it all turned sour. Blair should have been one of the prominent faces in government but not the person in charge. Cameron is clearly the biggest idiot, he's a PR guy. Capable he was most certainly not. May looks to be the biggest non-entity and looks completely out of her depth.

Thatcher and then Blair showed complete contempt for the office of PRIME MINISTER 'primus inter pares' or first amongst equals. We have a parliamentary democracy with a Prime Minister, not a fcuking president and they were both sociopathic in their style. When you start subverting influence and manipulating power within your role for personal gain then you're not fit to lead, both terribly guilty of it. The public now want a Prime Minister to be a President and that's not what the system or office was designed for and as a result it doesn't function properly or have the proper checks and balances in place.

I'm not sure i can even answer the question.

Sir Alec Douglas-Home,

Wasn't there long so didn't do too much damage but the legacy of his government was the abolition of resale price maintenance, which enabled the cut price stickers on goods we see today. The reform Ė led by President of the Board of Trade Edward Heath Ė faced opposition within the party, but Douglas-Home held firm and the bill was eventually passed.

I hold views similar to the OP. I was a lapsed labour voter until corbyn, but would say major. Mind i do have a mixed bag of views on various issues. [:D]

In answer to wee gord, i agree blairs first term was impressive. He carried on the good work that majors government had started in ireland.

His other terms were very bad though. Iraq goes without saying, and it depends how heavily 500,000 is it? brown deaths sits with you.

The worstening of social immobility wrecked his term. On housing he did nothing. Absolutely nothing. Prices skyrocketed in his term. He introduced tuition fees. I think todays stagnant society is as much down to blair as thatcher.

And yes he put staff and money into the public sector. All of which came crashing down. The foundations were not solid. And New labour would have dismantled almost as much of the state as cameron did.

Yes.

She returned all the sites where the steel and coal industries once lived back to nature.

Her ideology liberated people of their work and helped deconstruct whole communities.

Her class gave Teesside to the private sector so eventually the last flicker of hope at Redcar was extinguished when a bloke in India turned off the light.

We have to thank her for reduction in polution from dirty industrial plant like ICI and the demolition of those ugly offices in Billingham. A true architect of the future - creating large open spaces for Teessides children to play and riders on stolen motor bikes to race on.

I was born in 1987 and the question is who is the least worst.

The answer is probably Brown although I donít know much about Major. Brown is my answer, not for what he has done but more for the fact he did ok in tough circumstances.

Anybody who says Blair, surely canít comprehend the damage heís done in the Middle East which we still see to this day. Estimates of 500,000 to 1,200,000 dead, the conditions that lead to the birth of ISIS, trashed our reputation there for another generation at least. All on a lie. All PMs have blood on their hands but none more so than he. I feel dirty just typing his name.

Home ownership at its lowest level for 30 years (longer in the North). Private renting higher than any time since the 60s. Totally flawed housing policy.

"She was also behind the Teesside Development Corporation."
Teesside seems to have gone a long way backwards in terms of secure, well paid jobs with decimation of the industrial heritage that prospers in other Western countries.

"Also she didnít tolerate any unlawful strikes."
She didn't tolerate lawful strikes, which I think is symptomatic of a dictator.
