BBC staff shocked that Russians are friendly

I can't help have a wry smile when surprised BBC staff say the Russian people are so friendly.

They have actually being conditioned by their own propaganda.

Gotta love people who have strong opinions on what people are like from certain countries without ever having been there.

I have been to Russia with work and whilst they initially aren't that naturally friendly/smiley with strangers. As you get to know them they can be very warm people as well.

Of course you get bellends in any country but the same applies for here.

Also whilst undoubtedly the Russia regime is corrupt and not to be trusted, you shouldn't tar all Russians people as the same.

Having said that, I would not go to the world cup for safety reasons.

They're probably surprised because 'last' time they were there they were being tailed and prevented from.working by the secret police.

I have been to Russia many times.

Here are the facts, no spin.

The times I have been Russians have gone out of their way to assist me. I was treated differently because I was a Brit, no other reason. They will do anything for you.
Russian people are very kind. Many of the elders still have Soviet values.
They like a drink, they are not perfect, same as us.
If you get invited to a Russian dacha or flat they will do dumplings and get the vodka out.
Always show respect for their flag and be polite and just accept them and Russians will join in with our fans and try and sing some of our songs in the bars. Our pound is very strong against the rouble.

Worries = Nationalism has dramatically increased in the last 10 years. Soccer hooliganism is an issue. The Russian Police let them get on with it. The ritual has to be seen to be believed, they face each other and march slowly towards each other before unleashing hell.

I have found Russians quite racist, sorry.

There is a small percentage who think it is their national duty to rip foreigners off.

We have fallen out with Moscow at the moment and have been openly critical of the Kremlin in our media, not sure how they will take having loads of Brits on their patch.

Russian women are abnormally good looking, must be something in the water.

BBC staff shocked that Russians are friendly

I was there earlier this year for a couple of visits, and have spent a lot of time in the Baltic states also.

Generally I find them to be nice, hospitable people. I certainly find them more outgoing and welcoming than the Baltic nations, who are very introverted (ie the non ethnic Russians who live there, a sizeable chunk of Latvia and a smaller percentage of Estonia is ethnic Russian - this is especially weird in Estonia as the language and culture is so different).

I’m white so had no issue with racism, but I can see why you might be worried, particularly if you are black or south Asian. There are a lot of East Asian and central Asian minorities though, it isn’t as homogenously White as you would think. Particularly in Moscow. The Baltic states are far less diverse, for example.

The women are much nicer and friendlier than the men. That’s not to say they’re just going to throw themselves at you, but they’re very willing to talk to you. I suspect in part, it’s because Russian men are dreadful misogynists, in a level which surpasses dreadful misogyny in the UK, so even speaking to them on a decent, human level tends to impress them.

Homophobia is an issue. Again, among men more so than women.

Engage with them as people, and try and ignore stereotypes. A good friend of mine instantly takes a dislike to anyone who talks about Putin as the first thing to discuss. It’s not that they won’t engage with you about it eventually when you get to know them, but they’re not defined by politics, and while many like him, many also do not, and hate the association. They don’t want to feel like they have to defend themselves to a stranger.

They generally like British culture. Sadly including a love of football hooliganism. Which is why I’d probably keep a low profile, although I suspect they’ll have been scared into behaving by the police, who are everywhere - particularly in Moscow. I suspect this will be ramped up even more for the tourament.

I think if you can go with an open mind and positive attitude, I’m pretty sure you’ll like the place. It’s certainly safe to visit as a tourist, but I would have misgivings about going to a football match there. Football fans are only a minority of the population.

'Homophobia is an issue'

Yep.

I omitted that from my post because it is pretty much common knowledge. They don't understand why gays should be tolerated, it is pretty much drilled into them from an early age.

Putin claims 'Russians can make up their own minds' but I imagine being gay in Moscow would be a bit risky.

I have quite a few Russian friends/ acquaintances. Parthenia and Belgravia is pretty much mini Moscow now. I think they will put on a great show.

Yeah, its a huge shock that people in other countries may be just like us... some good, some bad; with the same issues, worries, problems, solutions as us!

Most people out there in the world are good, decent people. This notion that other countries are 'bad' or any less tolerant or giving is just preposterous.

We are conditioned to be suspicious of anything Russian. Every BBC news story I have read for several years has a negative slant on Russia and the Russians. I am sure there are a mixed bunch , but that's not the message we receive is it - hence the post. I notice Alan Shearer also has said today how friendly the people are - almost in shock.

I am currently working in Russia, there 14000 people on site of many different nationalities, Russian,French,Italian,Indian,Kayak,Malaysian etc. I have seen no outward emotion of racism to anybody.

Most of the Russians are friendly, helpful & open.

The majority of the Russians on site are not excited about the world cup.

They are reading the hype in the press on hows its not safe, & cant believe it.

Atypical - I was listening for several hours to BBC Radio 5 on the 11th of June - I should have given a bit more background/information. Shearer was also on Radio 5 but that was yesterday (12th).

As Orwell wrote about in 1984 those in power must have clear enemies to give them control over their own populations. Russia is a convenient black enemy, a country of untrustworthy, violent, humourless criminals and thieves who are aggressively taking countries from others....according to our media.

Fair enough, it would be good to know if you meant actual BBC staff or just contributors on 5Live, they're not necessarily the same thing. For instance, Robbie Savage isn't 'BBC staff'.

Many (actual) BBC staff had fairly unsavoury experiences in Sochi only 4 years ago, so their views won't be purely based on 'BBC propaganda' as you put it, experiences of their own rather.

But it sounds like you're talking about celebrities or commentators talking on the radio, who I'm fairly sure are conditioned by the entire British media rather than just the BBC.

Agree with what most said on here. I've been there because i was visiting a friend there. Generally, they're no more or less friendly than most other places. Be respectful and they will do the same and most will get along and have a laugh and a good time.

Racism is definitely alive and well there though and many are not afraid to show it. It's very odd too. one of my friends who is a black guy was in Moscow and a Russian guy said to him along the lines of "I don't agree with you being here. Have a good time here and enjoy yourself, i'm just saying i don't agree with it" - It was very weird. He was almost polite about it. I've never really heard anything like it before.

Whether they're more or less racist and homophobic than other places is one thing, but they're certainly more open about anyway. That said, i'm sure there's plenty there that aren't like that too.

AT - both every day reporters and celebrity staff said they were surprised.

Istanbul - the Russian government and Russian people are both shown in negative light. People = Russian online fraudsters, Online Russian ransomware, Russian racist hooligans, Russian militia attacking Ukraine, Russian athlete cheats (everyone of them of course) Gazprom (private Russian business) depriving countries of subsidised Russian gas.

I know hundreds of Russians. By and large they are very much like us. They're quite direct and can view a certain type of English politeness as insincerity. Social attitudes can seem a bit outdated to us; racism and homophobia is a bit 1950s but it's nothing like the level on COB. It's more Stockton than Shoreditch.
