Sad to hear that he has died. Only the third after Moore and Ball to go of that iconic team.

On the day another doomed World Cup campaign squad announced we lose another of our 1966 heroes. Destined to be the only Englishmen to lift the World Cup.

83.

That defensive header to Helmut “Porky “ Haller which put West Germany ahead. His steely determination and will to put that behind him reflective of that team ethos.

I was gutted when I heard this today. I was just starting supporting the Boro and football in 1966.

RIP

I was in the RAF at Leeming (RB199 propulsion flight) with his son! Nice lad! Chip off the old block! [^]

Took real guts to dig in and recover from that shocking mistake for a West Germany's first goal. A really solid player, very much in the Alf Ramsey mould. His full first name was Ramon, which always intrigued me.

Didn't he become a funeral director after he packed in? In the days when players weren't set for life.

Yes he was a funeral director.
He sold his World cup medal to give his
sons some cash for the future.
Saw him play for Everton.
Top class full back.

“His full first name was Ramon, which always intrigued me.”

5live said he was named after a Mexican film star whose surname now escapes me.
