Pulis and the summer transfer window

So this is his chance to get his team. Many believe with thw right acquisitions then this will be the platform for a successful promotion campaign.

So what type of signings are people expecting us to make? History suggests he'll look for workmanlike rather than flair players and that could prove crucial over the long season. A lot will depend on what we can get in through selling players I should imagine, but how many new players are people expecting in the summer?. Do we need another massive overhaul or just a couple of tweeks here and there?

I think we need a proper target man, possibly another striker as well - I would sell Britt, looks like Braithwaite wont come back, nor Fletcher, bamford as a squad player

We need more pace and creativity in midfield - Clayton, Howson, Leadbitter could all be replaced, hope to sign Besic permenantly

Id get in a new left back - Friend just doesnt look good enough, plus we need more back up.

I imagine it will be a busy summer - min 5 signings

'I think we need a proper target man'

Why?

We have one of the best strikers in the division in Bamford.

Why on earth would we need a 'proper target man'?

We have far more problems to address than replacing Bamford.

Hopefully if Pulis stays then he realises Paddy is our best chance of gaining promotion...and not Rudy Gestede.

I don't think we are a million miles away from being a challenging team.
Clearly we lack some craft and guile and there is too much pressure on Traore to carry us.
Some of the them aren't getting any younger either.
I don't think we will see a big overhaul and to be honest, If we keep Traore, get Besic back, add a left sided attacker and replace Howson with an attacking midfielder we'd probably be there or thereabouts come next May:
In an ideal world I'd like 2 new fullbacks also.

We need to go all out for a decent centre midfielder. Like Newcastle did with Matt richie.

I don't think Matt Richie has once played for Newcastle in the centre of midfield....nor did he at Bournemouth.

Midfielders are what's needed.

I'm sure Steve Gibson would happily trade Downing' Clayton, Leadbitter, Howson, and co if he could sign someone good.

Besic and Baker - no thanks.

8 out 12 in.

Pulis will be mindful of his own CV and he will want good quality footballers.

since x-mass eve of 2017 - his found out just what a brutal league this can be - all that luxury in the premierschyte made him forget !.

I think he also knows by now that Boro fans don't expect to be getting beat every third or fourth game in this league.

oh ! - and we like clean sheets - both on beds and between the sticks.

Left wing.
Plus two midfielders to replace leadbitter and howson.

The trouble is we may well lose Gibson and traore. Either of which would be disastrous.
Ayala/gibson with clayton in front is the rock upon which our defensive strength was founded.
Traore is OUR ONLY creative outlet.

Keep 6 Bamford, Traore, Ayala, Gibson, Fry and Clayton.
Keep another 5 (for varied reasons, none of them ideal) Friend, Fabio, Randolph, Dimi and Downing (who else is going to pay his wages for a year)
Keep or loan out 5 (Ripley, Wing, Tavernier, Miller, Chapman and other young players)
Sell 10 (Assombolonga, Fletcher, Braithwaite, Gestede, Howson, Leadbitter, Shotton, Johnson, De Saart, Mejias).
Those you can't sell, then give away.
Those you can't give away then shoot.

That would mean we would need 7 in.
A first choice RB and LB
2 CM players who have quality and get forward.
1 Wide player with pace, quality and who can score
A No10/Creative forward player who can score.
1 Striker to give Bamford competition.

I wouldn't pay a lot for Besic and not bothered if he doesn't come.
I wouldn't sign Besic unless free, or Cranie
I just haven't seen enough of Baker to form a view.
I haven't seen anything of Harrison, so daft to comment.

Fewer 1st team squad players of higher quality, greater ability, more pace and greater hunger.
Supplement with more young players from the academy and U23's

We should only need one or two players with our new special manager.

James Morrison would be the proper cm we need, another shout is saville at millwall.

Josh Murphy imo is a must

Ola aina and Joe Bryan are 2 quality fullbacks we should be able to attract.

Get besic back and play him in his proper position, Jota as #10. Intelligent, gets goals and assists for days.

In Randolph, Ayala, Gibson, bamford and if we can keep them besic and traore we have the foundations for a good team. We just need to fill in the gaps.

I think the big concern is if we lose Traore, we lose our biggest threat within the team.

Villa knew that double/treble marking him was essential to stopping us.

That leaves 3 central midfielders and another winger who Villa paid little attention to, which goes to show the work that's needed on the squad.

Downing should be a squad member, not a first team regular.

Leadbitter, Clayton and Howson is not a high energy, creative midfield that will get us promoted. We need goals and assists from central positions, at a similar ratio to that of Ramirez when he was here.

I'd look to sign Besic, but as a defensive midfielder, a position he's spent most of his career playing.

We need someone who can link midfield and attack, score a few goals, quite nippy etc. Not too dissimilar to Ramirez when he first came. Fabrini did this too.

The left side Friend and Downing have been very good servants, but they can't get crosses in any longer and have peaked. Play Harrison? new left back?

I don't think Pulis will change this but I like to see a right back that can get crosses in too. Fabio?

I am happy to sign Besic for reasonable sum £2 to £3m plus promotion add on.

“History suggests he'll look for workmanlike rather than flair players”

Really?

His West Brom team had Nacer Chadli in midfield, two direct wingers in Matt Phillips and James McClean and Chris Brunt as a deadball specialist getting forward as a full-back.

Elements of a Pulis team are big, strong and hard working but he has more creative players in there too.

You couldn't get any more workmanlike than Brunt and McClean if you went out looking for an example of a workmanlike player.

Agree pretty much with everything Indeedido has posted, except re Besic as I think he would be a decent asset at our level and although he had a mare against villa, so did a few others. I would try to get Besic for about £3M but given Evertons situation he might end up staying.

I can see Adama going now one of the bigger boys will bid decent money I am sure. Gibson has had a poor season, not convinced he will leave as suggested.

We asked besic to do almost a Ramirez type role when he's not that kind of player at all, it's hard to judge him on those play off games against a better team while out of position.

Get rid of:
Friend - lost it
Shotton - Too casual, no use going forward
Clayton - sits far to deep, can't do anything going forward
Leadbitter - Too old
Gestede - Pointless
Baker - waste of space
Fletcher - cut our losses

Get Besic back and drop him into holding midfield (only one holding mid who should push us up a bit) and get a decent attack minded centre midfielder/ no 10 type to play alongside Howson in front. Try and get a 1 year extension on Traore's contract promising him a release clause if we don't go up next year.

Buy a left back, put Fabio right back. Keep Paddy and Britt up front unless we get 10m+ for Brit. If that happens sell him and try someone else.

A quality no 10 should be the priority, as well as a winger who is going to chip in with goals. We need to move on the likes of Friend, Shotton, Leadbitter, Downing, Fletcher and Gestede.

I woukd have mentioned it if I knew, but as I only looked at Stoke then you'll have to forgive me for not taking the rest in. Still that plus 14 gd leans itself to winning games by the odd goal more often than not and not really what you were suggesting when you said we need to look at that team as a marker inatead of the avoiding relegation teans he's managed in the PL I believe.

If people are thinking Pulis will sell Shotton.....or teams are looking to sign him......going to be some disappointed fans in August.

I've no issue keeping him as one of the 4 CBs we signed him as, but definitely not a RB.

He is not a priority, midfield is. And sell most of Monks dross. [^]

I was thinking style of play. I keep reading Pulis teams are defence orientated and my observations this season are that they are neither defence orientated or attacking orientated. TP has more resources that he had at Stoke in 2007/8 so I would hope for more than 79 points and expect more than 79points.

I was surprised to see Bristol City were in the play offs in 2008 with a goal difference of 1.

Depending on their attitude and willingness to compete for a place in the team I don't think there's anything wrong with our strikers. All three are proven at this level and all offer something different. I'd leave as is.

If we keep Traore, then left wing is a priority (if we lose him then it's both wings). If we sign besic then it's just one more top drawer creative midfielder we need.

Full backs can be improved on, but Shotten and Friend are useful squad players.

So I'd be happy with:

Forwards: Bamford, Britt, Gestede

Wingers: Traore, Downing, Harrison (if we loan again), *new signing*

Centre mid: Howson, Besic, Clayton, *new signing*

Centre backs: Gibson, Ayala, Fry, Shotton

Right back: Fabio, *new signing*

Left back: Friend, *new signing*

Randolph is absolutely fine at this level.

So if (and it's a big 'if') we keep hold of Besic and Traore then I reckon were only 4 players away. Quality over quantity.

If you lose Traore (for rather less than some have been suggesting),then get in Barrow from Reading at a tenth of the price. He's very good.

And again, if you lose Gibson, get in our lad Hutchinson - again for a tenth of the price. Or maybe a fifth. I don't think you'd be any worse off after those two deals on the pitch. And you'd have plenty of money to shove a bit more creativity and pace in midfield.

Good thread this.

I also don't think Pulis plays to his PulisBall stereotype - he's pragmatic, like Big Sam. Give him better players in an easier league and he'll play better football.

If anything there's been times watching this team when I've wanted to see him plant Rudy in the box, go super-direct and launch diagonal balls at him, but we haven't, we've kept trying to play football.
