Do you expect to see any surprises? Any notable absentees?

I would like him to take Shelvey personally but don't expet him to and will probably just play it safe. Can't see a place for axelander-arnold either.

I don't think Sessegnon is quite ready to make the step up just yet. Has to be very careful if he moves on this summer.

Sancho could've been a bit of a wildcard but I don't think he's even made the Under 21 squad yet so would be a surprise.

Pope, Pickford, Tarkowski, Vardy and Harry Maguire, maybe Shelvey.
Rest will be the usual from the top 6 teams, I'd guess.

We're struggling in the midfield, but I wouldn't be surprised if he took Lallana despite him barely playing this season.

Think it will be this...

Pickford, Butland, Hart.

Walker, Trippier, Rose, Bertrand, Stones, McGuire, Jones, Cahill, Alexander-Arnold.

Henderson, Dier, Alli, Sterling, Lingard, Delph, Lallana, Young, Wilshere.

Kane, Vardy, Rashford.

I wonder if the 35 man list that has to be given to Fifa will be leaked. Apparently the FA have requested that only the 23 man squad is made public. Quite tough picking enough players to fill 35 positions!

I don't see him taking 9 defenders rico, certainly not 3 right backs. Think Ashley young will go in place of Bertrand as well.

As mentioned it's the poorest England Squad in a very long time. Certainly in my lifetime and I can remember Italia 90.

That said. They've hardly got much to compete with in terms of performances at tournaments, so they might do OK.

I just hope Joe Hart is nowhere near the side. He has been a liability for a few years now.

My guess;

Pickford, Butland, Hart

Walker, Trippier, Rose, Bertrand, Stones, Jones, Cahill, Maguire

Henderson, Dier, Alli, Sterling, Delph, Lingard, Wilshere, Lallana

Kane, Vardy, Rashford, Welbeck

I'd take Welbeck. He's capable of playing out on the wings, and capable of the odd moment of brilliant. Christ, we miss Oxlade Chamberlain. The midfield options are absolutely dreadful. Depressingly, we probably could have use for Milner still.

I have been looking at the probable squad and thought have we ever had such a turn over of players since the last WC. It must be one of the most inexperienced squads we've ever taken to a major tournament. I had a look at what the players were up to in the season before the 2014 WC.

Pickford – Season loan at Carlisle
Butland – Season loan in the championship with Barnsley & Leeds
Hart – 31 games for Man City. Won the PL. Went to the 2014 WC

Walker – Missed the WC through injury
Trippier – Promoted to the PL with Burnley
Rose – 22 PL games for Spurs
Bertrand – half season loan to Villa in the PL
Stones – 21 PL games for Everton
McGuire – 41 games in League 1 for Sheffield Utd
Jones – 26 games for Man Utd in the PL. Went to the 2014 WC
Cahill – 30 games for Chelsea in the PL. Went to the 2014 WC
Alexander-Arnold – was 15 years old

Henderson - 35 PL games for Liverpool. Went to the 2014 WC
Dier – Played at Sorting Lisbon
Alli – Playing for MK Dons
Sterling – 9 PL goals for Liverpool. Went to the 2014 WC
Lingard – 28 Championship games for Birmingham & Brighton
Delph – 34 games in the PL with Villa
Lallana – 9 PL goals for Southampton
Young – 20 PL games for Man Utd. (didn’t go the 2014 WC)
Wilshere - 24 PL games for arsenal. Went to the 2014 WC

Kane – Had scored his first Spurs goal in April 2014
Vardy – scored 16 goals in the championship in his 2nd season for Leicester
Rashford – was 16

4 years is a long time, so imo what they were doing 4 years ago is irrelevant. all that matters is what there doing now.

im gonna contradict myself and say id take hart. you dont really need 3 goalkeepers in terms of playing. pope (or whoever is deemed 3rd choice) deserves it but he would be 3rd choice. so for me hart and his experience would outweigh the reason for taking pope.

Id like to see Alexander-Arnold and Sessegnon go. There is a space up for grabs with the unfortunate injury to Oxlade-Chamberlain, I hope that goes to someone remotely exciting and not Livermore/another defensive CM - Shelvey is a bit different

"You just know he's going to take Joe Hart."

More than that, he will be the number 1, will start the first game and anyone thinking anything else is deluded as Gareth loves him even though he has been $hit for a good few years now.

Butland for me. Pickford was totally embarrassing last game out, bereft of confidence and made numerous howlers.

I''d take Andy Carroll and give the team a real plan B.

We'll probably continue the way we are, change like for like when getting beat and go out without a whimper.

Andy Carroll in principle is a plan B, however he can't stay fit playing club football. In a tournament even coming as a sub he'd be just be out injured most of the time.

The squad as always will pretty underwhelming, won't pick any exciting surprises and will end up with similar to what qualified i.e Livermore.

"I don't see him taking 9 defenders rico, certainly not 3 right backs."

Just the 10 defenders then, including three right backs. Delph and Young can play in midfield mind, but have both played in defence this last season.

Full squad...

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland, Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope.

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gary Cahill, Fabian Delph, Phil Jones, Harry Maguire, Danny Rose, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker, Ashley Young.

Midfielders: Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Jordan Henderson, Jesse Lingard, Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Forwards: Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Jamie Vardy, Danny Welbeck.

Stand-by: Tom Heaton, James Tarkowski, Lewis Cook, Jake Livemore and Adam Lallana.

Yeah I think he's settled on 3 at the back. It seemed to work quite well in the recent friendlies, especially with Walker as the right sided CB. That leaves Trippier and Trent A-A as the two right backs/RWB.

Expect the starting 11 will be something like this...

.............Pickford

......Walker Stones McGuire
Trippier....................Rose

........Dier...Henderson

...Alli..............Sterling
.............Kane

Don't mind that squad at all, good on Gareth for sticking to his ethos. If you don't play for your club, you don't play for England. Make it mean something.

Rico's team looks like the one.

Can anyone shoehorn Kane, Vardy, Raheem and Dele Alli into the same XI?
