Do people from Cornwall travel?

I've travelled and lived home and abroad for many years and have met people from all corners of the UK apart from Cornwall.

Do people from Cornwall just stay at home and not travel outside of the county border or go abroad? Apart from Rick Stein of course.

If I lived in Cornwall it's unlikely I'd go anywhere else. Beautiful place.

I lived in Cornwall about 10 years ago.
Great place.
Weather wise it's about 5 degrees warmer than the NE . It gets a lot of rain though with everywhere being near the coast.

I look longingly at the place , but my beloved is sick of moving.
I do miss the black St Piran's flag and talks of independence. [:D]

Perhaps I can get back one day, if I live that long.

***It gets a lot of rain though***

Does it ever. And not just drizzly annoying rain either. Everytime I've been it's stair rodding down for days on end. It might be warmer than the NE, but not by 5 degrees.

I'm sure it's nice to visit, but I think I'd go nuts with all the rain.

Exeter is quite a bit warmer than Teesside, the problem is it is very wet so when it is cold it feels colder than it is because of the dampness.

Exeter is of course in Devon which also gets precipitation from the east and west sides.

When I used to holiday there years ago it was in summertime. The rain throughout the year is something.
Getting water bills larger than the rest of the country because of the responsibility for beaches was not appreciated.

Still think the South West is the best place to live in the UK though. Just pips North Yorkshire.[:P]
It was nice when I regarded the Jamaica Inn as my local though.

Interesting.
It seems that Newcastle is warmer than Truro in the summer months.

Cornwall tend not to get a lot of snow and ice - overall a degree or 2 warmer. Kent and Sussex are warmer in the summer and they are drier.

I like Cornwall, rugged coasts, great gardens, characterful locations, mining heritage, a lot of variety in a small area. Disadvantage are the crowds and now the cost. On Teesside you can go to Saltburn park for free, relatively empty beaches, lovely fish and chips, great scenary.

Most people who live in Cornwall are not from Cornwall if you go back 50 years.

If it weren't for the Cornish a lot of the iron ore mines in the Cleveland Hills wouldn't have been developed.

My ancestors walked from the looking for work as tin mining was in decline.

I like Cornwall a lot, but God is it cloudy and wet.
I spent a Feb - April down there and seemed to get wet every time I left a building.
The locals don't travel around much in the summer as it takes an age to get anywhere.

There's not much difference in temperature across the UK on average. Compare Inverness and Truro for example.

The south east is a bit warmer but there really isn't much difference between any places at the same altitude.

People are confused about temperatures reported on news reports. -10C on the top of a mountain in Scotlanx isn't a direct comparison with anywhere in England or Wales.

There are 50 mountains in Scotland higher than Snowdon and 150 higher than Scafell Pike.

I'm from Cornwall. Near the Lizard, so right down as far as you can go.

Average wages are among the lowest in the country, property prices are among the highest in the country, and there is a lack of further education places in Cornwall. Not a great combination, which results in a lot of young people leaving and never going back.

OP - yes, of course people travel. In fact I quite often see people all over the place with St Piran flag stickers on the back of their car. I was in Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago, and met a man from Truro.

I left there 20 years ago, and have no intention of going back. However, I loved my childhood there. Childhood Summers involved going straight to the beach after we got home from school.

when i first went to Uni at Teessside i shared a house with a lad who came from Penzance - when applying to Uni's someone told him Teesside was in the midlands so he figured it wasn't impossible far away. turns out he never checked and ended up with a 2-day train journey to get to and fro

he left after the first year as he couldn't deal with the travelling. ended up getting spotted by a model agency which led to him going out with Kate Winslett (at height of her fame) for a couple of years!

I listened to a debate about this on Radio 4.

It is an interesting debate. They have this perfect world down there and generally stay put. Some of the more militant Cornish want independence though I don't see what good that will do as they pretty much govern themselves.

Strange accent too. Agatha Christie was Cornish.

Since the tin mines shut they have no industry other than tourism.
When you meet people travelling it tends to be for work, so you get people from industrial areas - hence why you get people from the NE all over the world.

A lot a people from Cornwall don't seem to have strong accents (maybe because there are so many migrants and visitors there), hence they may go unnoticed in other places.

Perhaps you're getting Cornwall mixed up with Somerset Epip.
Somerset is the cider and Wurzels county.

Somerset is cider country quite different to Cornwall. Farming is big in Somerset less so in Cornwall which is more fishing and tourism and more tourism. Mining and China Clay was massive in Cornwall. All the mining has gone, Parts of Cornwall are like Loftus (without Potash).

I used to live in Whitby but I didn't want to be there 365 days a year. I used to going to places with things like department stores, cinemas, night clubs.

As someone has alluded to upthread, Loftus/Liverton Mines has a really high percentage of people with Cornish surnames. Greater Teesside is an area of extremely high immigration - we all come from somewhere else a few generations back.

I went to Cornwall, a few years back for a lad of here, wedding.
Never been before and was a bit apprehensive about going. But it was absolutely superb. Fantastic week it was, and the beaches were excellent. Really glad we went.
1 day it rained, and as everything was more or less based outside, we didn't much that day. But the rest of the week we went exploring all the way to Lands End, Penzance, St Ives etc. (couldn't get over how many Chinese tourists there were in St Ives)
Only point to make, you do really need a car and sat nav, as the places are some distance without realising and for some reason, there were no street names on a lot of the roads.
