It sounds like he's had a difficult time at Sunderland so I'm wondering where will he go in the summer.

I can't see him getting a game here, will he go out on loan again or will we try to sell him?

Will we get a fee for him?

Is the championship his level or does he need to drop to league one?

It's starting to look like the 7m fee we paid was a tad excessive [xx(]

He is going to be a real problem.
I'm confident he will be on big wages. Very few Championship clubs could afford those wages, no League 1 clubs.
So even on a free transfer, nobody would take him on without some financial contribution.

My thoughts exactly indeedido.

It may actually come to a point where we have to subsidise the majority of his wages while he's out on loan for the next 2/3 years.

I think itís too early to write him off totally, heís had a hard time at both us and Sunderland, perhaps a loan move and a restoration of his confidence might do him the world of good.

Shoot me down for this if you like, but I believe there's a player in there somewhere, he seems to have a canny knack of being in decent positions, hitting the woodwork 3 times in the last 4 games and the keeper making some decent saves.

Whilst you're getting yourself into these positions in won't take much to change your luck, he could easily have had 6/7 as oppose to 1 in the last 4 games.

I believe he's worth peserving with personally as a youngster which he is can develop late. Just my opinion.

He worked well as an impact sub early in Monkís reign. Thereís definitely a player in there but he needs regular football to restore his confidence, the burden of his price tag is weighing heavy.

Maybe another loan move might be better for him then Exiled.

Sunderland felt like a bad move at the time, they are a toxic club with a fan base that expect Barcelona quality on the pitch.

Maybe if Barnsley stay up he might go back there on loan or a similar type of team where the expectation isn't as high.

I'd probably agree with that Hamster, my point being even in a struggling team he's getting chances by being in the right place. Imagine with a bit of confidence and a team not struggling as much then I believe he could notch a good few goals.

He wasn't greatly in favour with Monk by the time he left. From this season he hasn't a lot going for him to move him on, except possibly a League 1 loan at some expense to us.

My son watched him at the Reading game yesterday. Although he hit the woodwork, he missed 3 one on one, control was awful, passing was shocking and didnít even look like he could do a job at conference level.
Some players just get lucky in their careers, and somehow become a professional footballer.

Offer him to Monk. He's signed him once , he may want to back his judgement.

Sorry really but he's a write off. Whether we are in the Prem or the Chumps next season, we cannot afford a passenger - we still have to cope with the return of Gestede. 😀

I thought he's played well in a poor side . He's done better there without the goals that I thought . He's missed a few easy chances scored a few a been unlucky hitting the post on numerous occasions in a side bottom of the league . He was out scoring Bamford when he left . I did think when he left we'd paid far to much . The way the market is now if we stay in the Champo and tgey odds say that we probably will we might pay more for worse with only a few mikes kept in the clock. Should we get injuries and we manage to sneak a place in the premier league this spell at Sunderland could have been a blessing in disguise for us and Fletcher. It's up to us to nurture him but playing the long ball won't be ideal for his devolpment .
Pulis said he might only be here till they end if thus season so him going out might be to help the next manager as well as Pulis , Fletcher and our Bank both now while on loan or if we chose to sell.
Has good movement , pace and a decent strike on him and youth on his side .

'Gets into good positions'

If I had a quid for every time I've heard that cliche trotted out. Sticking the ball in the net is the only thing that matters if you're a striker.

I just don't see a natural goalscorer in the lad, he's like Aliadiere, carving a living out of being able to run fast without a great deal of end product.

Whoever scouted him needs binning. Can't trap the ball at all and shins the ball more times than he kicks it with his feet.

Maybe he is not an out-and-out centre forward

Maybe needs some beef on him and play him in a wider right role and use his pace
Get him stuck into a few tackles with midfielders and get his confidence up and work on his tactical awareness

I was really shocked at the price we paid for him, astonishing given his achievements at that time.

When he came on and scored against QPR I thought maybe he will prove a fair buy. He did well when he came on at Hull to win the Penalty too. However, since then, he has been woefully lightweight when he got game time.

He is finding goal scoring positions at Sunderland in games and finds the woodwork well and I accept the fine margins argument. The thing is we need players who we can trust to step up and provide goals. Fletcher is an expensive risk and imho is a wrong fit for our club in the formation and style we play now.

I doubt we will get anywhere near the money paid, so its a cut our losses or loan him out job for me. I wish him well, but he is not ready at this level and if we are hoping to get promotion soon, we need much better than Fletcher

Remember Mick McCarthy saying he was enquiring about taking Fletcher on loan when Boro came in and bought him for £6m which was way out of Ipswichís range. He was almost saying it was way outside his valuation of the player.
Definitely think we paid waaaaaay over the odds. He may come good, and there may be a player in there, but we shouldnít have spent £6-7m on someone who possibly may co e good.

Itís one of those ones where you have to accept we made a mistake and we need to cut our losses.

Recoup as much money as possible but even if we cancel his contract by mutual consent and get nothing we can save wages.

Best to move on then countine to regret buying him. Whatís done is done. Hopefully lesson learnt.

As for why he's getting in the Sunderland team, I read somewhere they are contractually obliged to play him in a minimum of 50% of the games he's eligible and fit for. They also don't have much in the way of other options. Josh Maja or Kazenga Lualua anyone?

Not sure what his wages are but if they are more than average for a championship player then I think we have to cut a loss and try and move him on as long as the fee isn't stupid but who will pay money for him I'm not sure.

Like people have said he has seemed to cause the opposition some problems in games for scumderland without getting the return that reflects it and now monk has gone and we are in a better position I feel a bit more inclined to give him a chance if he is to be here next season.

Hard to know what the best way to go is with him.

One of these players who hasn't improved since he was 15 or 16. Whether that's because of being molly coddled or just a lack of hard work, or something else, that's anyone's guess.

We'll own him for the next 3 years or so but I doubt he'll spend any of it at Rockliffe. Then he'll get released and go to non-league before retiring at 28.

The more important issue is that if I'd made a strong recommendation to invest £6.5m of my employer's money into something and it ended up being as sh!t as Ashley Fletcher, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have a job with that company anymore. Scouts seem to be completely unaccountable for their sh!tness.

The manager who wasted £6.5 Million of Boro's money on Fletcher is now plying his wares with Birmingham City and has them 2 points off a relegation to the third tier.

Thank God Gibson got rid of him.

A pity we cannot get rid of Fletcher fans off this board.
Personally I would give the Mackems Fletcher for nothing as a relegation present.

Which is an improvement of their situation from when he took over, they were 2 points away from safety and now they're 2 points above relegation.

He'll probably keep them up.

Heís a young kid with a lot of good physical attributes. There is a Championship player in there despite his obvious technical failings.

We paid too much for him, but thatís not his fault, and we donít get that money back if we chase him out of town with pitchforks.
