This day 1977 - Ian ‘Charlie’ Bell

Made his Boro debut this day 15th April away to Wolves in a 0-0 fixture, he was known as Charlie, who played 10 games for the Boro, between 1977-81, scoring one goal in a 2-1 defeat away to Brum
Remember him well, midfielder who is now, IIRC a police inspector in Marske

Charlie Bell went on to play & later manage Marske, his younger brother Tony, was also on Boro’s book, although he never made it to the 1st team.

I wasn’t aware of Tony Bell until it was pointed out on here recently

Prior to that Tony worked as groundsman at Acklam Park , Green Lane under Peter Athey who of course was the father of England cricket opener Bill Athey.

No. I don’t live in the area any more and have had to follow the Boro from a distance for almost the last 40 years. But like you, the 73-74 season was my favourite ever, having started to go to Ayresome in 1969. I was there to see the Boro get beat by Fulham in the first game at home in 73-74, but from that point on we were almost untouchable. I loved that forward line, obviously, but they were backed up by 3 of the finest midfield players I ever saw in a Boro shirt - Souness, Murdoch and Armstrong.

Yep, can you imagine if we had those 3 in midfield now?

Think he played for and captained Southlands school.
Very good midfielder but there were some other good ones in his school year who went on to play for Boro namely Mike Angus and Mark Procter.
