Howson's movement off the ball

I don't want to turn this into a negative because it was a big win today and a great performance from the team, but one thing I noticed today was how good Howson's movement is off the ball. We need to be looking to get the ball to him. He regularly takes up advanced positions and finds space, but several times today I noticed he showed for the ball and didn't get the pass.

There was a point in the 2nd half when the ball was played into Britt's feet, and Howson made a great run peeling off him, but Britt tried to hold the ball up instead and ended up losing it.

Happens quite regularly, hes very good at finding space, unfortunately it seems to go unnoticed too often when we play the ball.

Howís on had 3 touches in the first half!!! THREE!! And one was a smash to the face, he is absolutely awful, he is quite possibly the worst midfielder I have seen for us in a very very long time

Surely Pulis can see that e offers us absolutely nothing at all

LedesmasLoveChild, I saw it a bit different. He is very good at finding space but it goes unnoticed a lot of the time. I think it's probably partly down to Clayton looking to play the ball sideways most of the time, but I don't want to criticise Clayton cos he did his job well today overall.

He can't have had only three touches. He had about four when he had his shot at the start

Agree with Ledesma to a certain extent. I barely noticed he was playing til the last 20 minutes. He's proved a poor signing for me. Sooner have Forshaw (obviously).

Howson was a passenger today.

Sometimes he just doesnít impact the game, and as a central Midfielder thatís criminal. He wonít be here next season if Pulis is, Pulis demands more.

Monsoon!! Your saying Howson had a great game, wow and people think Iím on a wind up, did you watch the game? Honestly? He played absolutely no part whatsoever

Oh by the way itís very easy to find space on a football
Pitch, he almost finds too much, as in he is nowhere near the action at any point.

He is a very poor player and I will be shocked if he is here next season, I donít like the 3 central midfielders formation, and especially when they are all of a similar playstyle, Clayton and Besic did not need howson at all today, and he provided absolutely nothing going forward

Mr anonymous I call him - his impact, or rather lack of it is quite staggering. Strange really because heís obviously been quite popular at his other clubs so must have had something about him at some point - maybe heís come here on holiday before he disappears into the ether

Very good player IMHO. We have been so static and one paced in recent years that when we get a midfielder prepared to move for the ball, we don't know how to use him.

We almost went 2-0 down at the end of a move when he twice completely and embarrassingly failed to make any sort of challenge, one of them just a few yards to the left of the City dugout.

He was good at finding hiding spaces on the pitch on Saturday for sure because I certainly didn't notice him all game.

Seriously though, maybe I am missing some runs he's doing off the ball but if that's not working for him, then he needs to get himself more involved in the meat of the action to influence the game. Because he is coming across as invisible at the moment.

Even to his team mates if they can't spot him for a pass.

I noticed this. I think hes doing his best to keep us on the front foot. His forward running to find space has an impact on the opposition. If he was on top of Clayton it would just draw them on.

He wasn't seeing too much of the ball (you can argue that's everybody else's fault) yet he stuck to that role. Forward movement drags the opposition about and creates space for others.

To say he is the worst midfielder we have had is a joke. Either troll or completely clueless

Stats can often be misleading and don't show the overall picture, but regardless:

League only:

Besic: Goals 0 Assists 1
Baker: Goals 1 Assists 0
Howson: Goals 2 Assists 2
Clayton: Goals 0 Assists 0
Leadbitter: Goals 3 Assists 1

I don't think it paints a very good picture overall, but to suggest that Howson is the worst player we've had in years or that he doesn't contribute anything is simply incorrect.

I expected more from him given his goals/assists ratio at Norwich, but the majority of the season has been average from most of the squad.

You can count on one hand the number of players who've had a consistently good season.

Yes I was. i seen his run from midfield in the first half where perhaps he couldve finished better but it was a good run from midfield, also in the 2nd half when he was our furthest player forward but the ball into him was terrible. I was also there at preston away when he bent one into the corner, did you see those or do you only see what you want to see so you can come on here and make a tail of yourself?

Or alternatively, we need the likes of Clayton and Besic to be looking up and spotting the runs he makes. He could come deeper to try and get involved but then we'll have a situation where Bamford will be totally isolated. As has been said above, him taking up these advanced positions helps to keep us on the front foot.

Im not a great fan. He is the one who is supposed to be the more attack minded, and is the one who is failing. Leadbitter and clayton are the more defensive players and they do their job much better.
Tomlin did a much better job as the attacking midfielder. Thats more what i want from howson.

I said when we signed him that it was an underwhelming signing, so I haven't been surprised by him.

That said he is a funny player. In the 2nd half at Sheff U I thought he played superbly well driving forward.
At times in the second half he did similarly on saturday.
I've never seen him have a strong full match and he seems to always start matches in reverse gear.

Daft to say he is a poor player, he's just not what we needed and not worth the fee as things stand.

Howson has definitely got better as the season goes on. He is our most attacking central midfielder. Weíre just rubbish at picking the pass to the man in space which he often is. He also makes some great surging runs with the ball.

My only criticism is he needs to take a lead earlier. Often does it when we go behind.
