Oddly enough, Insurance is usually cheap better(newer) car that you buy, buying him a £700 car will be very expensive to insure.

Never buy a car that's older than 10 years old.

I bought my 17 year old Son a 13 plate 1ltr corsa, added me and his mum on the insurance and total cost was less than £1500.

We went with Ingenie who offer good driving discounts, original cost was £1790 but each quarter he got a good driving discount, poor driving and the bill could go up, Ingenie also sent you and him a weekly driving report- taken from the Black Box, so you both know how he is driving but ingenie won't insure cars older than 8 years old. I guess on the basis that good cars will be better looked after.

Oh and the 13 plate corsa wasn't hugely expensive, we paid £2100 for it with 47k on the clock, it was a previous cat D, but immaculate and just passed its MOT again without any work required.

Ford Ka was my daughters first car and the insurance was pretty reasonable - although it was a newer car and a Ka may not be a popular choice for a young lad.

Google group 1 insurance cars. (nothing over 1 litre)

I got the eldest a little Toyota which was reasonable with my insurer Admiral. The youngest has a 1 litre Corsa with Insure the Box.

Be aware the car has to be absolutely standard. If there is modifications or damage when they come to fit the box they will cancel the offer, you will then be in a world of schitt. The Corsa had a non-standard back box on the exhaust. I got a standard one fitted the same day and had to send photos and virtually beg them not to cancel.

We used to do this all the time. Actually the cheapest insurance is a 1 litre or 1.1 litre pug.
