Interesting article that was posted on COB earlier. Very sad tale. I remember him running rings around Newcastle at St James.

I was on a two week trial at the age of 16 at Darlo (they were then in the old 4th division, this day we were training with the first team in the gym that ran alongside feethams, then in walks Stephen Bell, a bit late, the Darlington manger at the time, asks him to pair up with me, he was quite a bit overweight and had a bin liner under his T shirt as he told me he was “trying to shed a few pounds” I should have told him, he was one of the main reasons I wanted to be a pro footballer...he was my favourite player, incredible skill and pace, but only seemed to last a couple of seasons...great player, wished he filled his potential..

Very good/sad article. My memory fades me a bit nowadays but think that he made his debut against Southampton and a comparison was made with Keegan who was making his debut for the saints that day.

Yes Stephen Bell made his Boro debut at 16 at home to the saints, it wasn’t KK debut for the saints, though he did score the only goal that day from the penalty spot

Remember him having a great game against Terry Venables QPR, who were top of the League the day we announced Big Mal as our manager. Great potential, sadly not fulfilled.

Got myself on MOTD aged 14, Sat on a crush barrier behind the goal against Sheff Wed in the Holgate, celebrating when Bell chipped Bob Bolder, what an outstanding young talent, what a tragedy...
Bell & Heine Otto were my first footballing hero's....

Outstanding talent, as mentioned very much unfulfilled. Remember marking him in the Ellis Cup on South Bank’s ground and feeling sad the way his career had panned out .

Tragic really. I dunno why but it’s the game against Bishops Stortford that always springs to mind when I think about him. He left his mark though that was the thick end of forty years ago.

Not long before he died I gave him a lift to the North Ormesby Workies after we had played in the Sunday morning North Riding Cup.

A mutual friend asked if I was going back to Normanby and if I would mind dropping Belly off.

There was Belly sat in my car and he asks me if I still go and watch the Boro. Somehow he deflected me talking to him about the Boro on to me talking about them.

A great talent that should have been nurtured better.

He used to come to my house and have drinks with my old man. He kicked a ball around with us kids in the garden but it was long after his career had gone. Then not long after that I remember my Dad speaking to his wife on the phone, getting the news that he had gone. Awful awful circumstances. We miss you Belly. Lots of love.
