Why all the contempt towards Boro players?

Just been reading a thread on here about Bamford from six weeks ago (hardly ancient history). These are some of the comments made in that one thread, all from different people, most of whom can't be dismissed as trolls or mackems fishing for a bite:

Heís done

The guy is a fraud

A truly awful player, no backbone no energy I don't understand what anyone sees in him

I don't think I've seen a player so easy to be knocked off the ball

Stop living 3 years ago, he's shot, & TP will administer the bullet soon

Such a waste of talent

Get shot

One word to describe Bamford. Fanny

Slow and no physical presence

Needs to look at League 1 or 2 clubs

Let him go to yet another club to prove he can come good, maybe Hartlepool

One season wonder

He seriously needs to get his windy head out of his arsť.

I appreciate supporters have opinions - it's part of what makes football so entertaining. I also understand it's easy to be frustrated when things aren't going well. But when did people become so absolutely definitive about players?

It's always happened to a certain extent, but it seems much more common these days, from Downing ("heart of a pea", "waste of skin") to Traore ("no footballing brain", "belongs in League One"). It's as if fans now rank a player's entire career, personality and potential on their last rating in the Gazette.

Sadly, it is the norm for this Message Board. Twitter is even worse, as fans get the option to channel their vitriol directly at the player in question.

There's always a selection of fans in every club who purely react to the short term.

Grant goes from captain fantastic, have to play him, leader, gets everyone going

to

Leadboots, crab, finished.

Thats happened over and over again within the time he has been here. Most fans are less reactive though. Most could see Bamford wasnt at his best but wanted to play him through th ebad spell as they knew there was a player in there

I think, for some, having a good old moan is one of the reasons they follow football: itís a vent for for the anger and frustration they feel with life.

Furthermore, they pay to watch football, so they feel judtified in being more vitriolic and abusive than they would normally would. Coupled with the anonymity of the internet, that leads to some pretty over the top comments.

I agree with onejobonTeesside, too much short termism.
Randolph, lucky to have him. He's a liability.
Friend, fantastic. He's legs have gone.
Gibson, future England international, he's crap.
Ayala, outstanding,. Should never play again.

And so it goes on....

I think some of it, and I'm guilty of it myself, is when a player has had a few bad games then even little mistakes become magnified and lept on.

Guy near me at the Barnsley match was screaming vitriol and abuse at George Friend for every little thing, and I don't think he had a particularly poor game.

BoroBen, was that in the West by any chance?

I had it in my ear as well. He was a little sloppy but the reaction was way over the top

I think some people don't understand the game to a high level but have the same frustration/passion so they find a way to vent it. Classic scapegoat mentality.

The o/p should have included the usernames. They enjoy posting bile which is often completely disproven, without being taken to task, but at least they'd have the inconvenience of creating new usernames.

Good idea, Anton, and I was tempted to name and shame. However, I decided not to start slinging mud at individuals, having had a few run-ins with people about this sort of thing in the past.

Also, there's so many board members guilty of it, I'd end up naming half the FMTTM community!

It all depends on if we win or if we lose.

Insults or praise.

"Minds like goldfish"

Yeah this is it. The criticism of friend at one point was a joke. People were arguing that he's always been terrible. It's like they make up the past to suit their current opinion

I'd be interested in the posters in the OP- can guess a few.

That said I'd be a hypocrite if I said I didn't shoot from the lip sometimes (Gestede, Fletcher, Johnson)
Having said that Bamford and Traore are high class players and obviously so.
The others: not so.[:D]

Some players deserve a degree of criticism, particularly if they've never performed to a high standard or don't give their best in a Boro shirt. We're entitled to opinions as fans. I bet everyone on here has had a pop at one player or another at some point.

But Bamford was the best player in the Championship three years ago, and yet people were talking about him as if he had no footballing skill whatsoever! That's the conscious dislocation between perception and reality that really rips my knitting.

A lack of nuance is something that seems to have plagued both football and modern society in recent years. It's either black or it's white and a chance to be 'right' and the ease in which being wrong is brushed off has lead to an increased value in extremist statements.

A disturbing lack of critical thinking across life to be honest, people easily swayed by and have their perceptions dragged around and affected by where wealth is concentrated. English football is a sad but not particularly surprising mirror of our society.

Inequality, gentrification, profit over quality, hyperbole, style over substance.

I couldn't agree more Torslander.[^]
Bamford is a class act and with Traore, they are worth the admission money alone.
