I was always of the understanding that you couldn't officiate a local rivals game but someone on facebook says you can so a geordie could ref a makem game or tottenham v arsenal game & no one would think that would be a problem.

Surely that cannot be right you really think they would ref impartially.

We should have won that game by half time but it really does stick in your throat when he disallowed a clear stonewall pen for us but had no hesitation in awarding their dubious one.

You are only not allowed to ref the team you follow.

We have north east refs and linesmen officiating at most of our games.

No ones notices till thereís a decision they donít agree with.

Heís reffed us loads of times

WOW LS news to me again i would say how can they ref without impartiality if your officiating one of your local rivals games especially when that team is in the same league as the team you follow.

Because itís his job and if he gets marked down too many times heíll get removed from the list.

We will have been given more pens by Geordie and Makem refs down the years than from anywhere else

You only notice where heís from if you do not agree with him

Let's be realistic, the long and short of it is that he made a mistake. Being a Sunderland fan has no bearing on that penalty.

London Smoggie I wouldn't say three was loads. He's reffed us when we beat both Burnley and Cardiff at home and a home draw with Peterborough.

If you look at the Skysport highlights he probably couldn't see what happened with the Braithwaite incident. There were at least two players between the ref and Braithwaite.

OPEO - heís probably done more than that over the years. Heíll have been an assistant before too.

We also didnít lose one of the games you mentioned. If he was that biased weíd have lost them all

And also the fact Braithwaite had his hand on the back of Kalas' neck pulling his head down.

I know some will say that the ref must remain impartial, but I also don't think it helps when you have fans chanting "you fat basstard". I can understand fans get frustrated and it can boil over, but when we started singing it in the 2nd half it did make me think to myself, it's not exactly going to encourage him to give us decisions.

"Because itís his job and if he gets marked down too many times heíll get removed from the list"

Ok then. Why can't he ref Sunderland matches too then? Surely the same applies.

Surely it should be that referees can officiate any game, even a team they follow because you trust them to be professional and impartial.

Or you don't allow them to referee any game where they may have a bias, even an unconscious one.

If he's not allowed to ref Sunderland games, then he shouldn't be able to ref boro or Newcastle games either surely.

Youíve probably watched thousands of games reffed or lined by local officials.

Itís not new. Why is this confusing for you Festa?

Clearly the point I've made is confusing you though as you've completely failed to address it.

I recall PGMOL - who audit the referees - stating that referees don't manage teams they support or teams from the same city to remove the extra pressure on them. Today is the perfect example of that reason, as soon as we lose the Sunderland card is played, yet nobody bats an eyelid after any of the other games we didn't lose that he took charge of.

I don't think referees are appointed based on the possibility of bias. If there was any suspicion of any referee ever being bias they would be removed indefinitely. If the reasoning was due to bias, where do you stop when it comes to deciding which games a referee can officiate? You'd end up being given only half a dozen games a season.

Impartiality is the main question here. He is obviously a massive Sunderland fan (season ticket holder until he started reffing in the football league). One week after his team has been knocked out by a local rival team, he is giving the opportunity to referee the team that just knocked his beloved Sunderland out of the cup. The problem lies with the EFL/FA for giving him the appointment.

If that's the case then, as stated in the chant he is not fit to referee - what a thing to say parmo you condemn him by your words

Just seen Kalas foul on Braithwaite on TV. I do not understand why a penalty was not given. I do not like to speculate on bias or even more darker speculation. This if it was in the Premier League would leave to a suspension of the match official and an investigation. I know we should have taken our chances but I have been watching Boro since 1957 and have never seen such an incompetent display from a referee as today.

No there weren't. The replays on the highlights on 5 showed the ref had a clear view of the incident. As Michael Gray said, "stonewall"

Jeff Winter is a massive Boro fan but reffed Newcastle, Sunderland Leeds loads of times. All referees will be massive fans of one team or another, its no big deal. That doesn't make them corrupt.

They wouldn't get to the top level if they couldn't put all that aside and get on with doing the job with integrity. Fans only criticise refs when the decisions go against them. He was poor today but Boro lost because they missed four one on ones, not because of the last minute penalty.

it might not have been such an issue if we hadn't just beaten his team in the FA cup last week. Probably still a bit raw with him.

It was as stonewall a penna as you can get. There penalty, hmm, Grant was a bit stupid going in he might have grazed the players toe at best, but the player wasn't moving at pace, it couldn't have unbalanced him, the player dived.
