It would have been nice for Sunderland and the North East to get it but you can also understand why they chose Coventry.

Both cities need to be revitalised.

Newcastle/Gateshead were defeated - my understanding was at the time they showed all the fantastic cultural landmarks they had to offer - Baltic, Sage, museums etc and the response was that they didn't need it as desperately as some other cities.
There are a lot of parallels between Hull and Coventry and Hull and Sunderland. It must have been a very difficult choice but Sunderland were clever in building a bid from grass roots upwards and almost a legacy in reverse they asked people what they wanted and started delivering in advance. The money and the national attention would have changed Sunderland for good. Feel disappointed for all the people that have worked so hard and devoted themselves to the plan. It seemed to be very much led by musicians, artists and ordinary people.

It was always going to be tough...up against the likes of Coventry and Stoke..the very definition of culture

"Hull has been reinvented this year"

Do you actually know anyone from Hull? Many of them would actually disagree since the "legacy" is little and the locals have been bypassed. It certainly hasnt been "reinvented" whatsoever, but a small amount of people have made significant amounts of money from it.

Sunderland's one of them pretend cities like preston isnt it? (awarded city status) its no leeds or newcastle when you walk around it. Theyve got the tall ships and air show next summer that will bring big visitor numbers to wearside

Pretend City - but when I was involved in pushing for City status for Middlesbrough we found out, pretend or not, stick city on your name and it brings in money. It was millions £ for both.
It seems mad but on a High Street level - major shops upgrade from a town to city branch - you get better goods for the shoppers and you can get a higher band of pay for some. This is what we were shown by the two towns that became cities.

my thoughts...Its just nice to open up a thread on this board and find that it is not a year old and being dredged up by Borobadge.
Unlucky Sunderland, mind I work with a lot of mackems and they admit that their town has very little in the way of culture or interest, other than a glass centre apparently.
