In the current mess we are in the Shotton scenario says a lot to me. We chased his signature for a fair amount of time while Redknapp the crook dithered. We finally got him, dropped Fry after one mistake and put Shotton in his place. He had a stinker and was himself then dumped. What a crock of poo.

I assume shotton was bought to give us experiences cover in that position. Fry is still raw. Ben Gibson breaks his leg tomorrow and Ayala gets suspended, what do you do? He’s a useful squad player to have about.

'Fry is still raw'... but gets picked ahead of Shotton.

He is a terrible squad player to have about. Supporters of the better clubs he has been at, all say the same.

He is a sign of how poor our recruitment team actually are, It is like wanting an Audi Q7 and buying a Dacia Duster

If, as is hoped, Monk is out before January, wastes like Shotton,Fletcher and Johnson will need to be moved on in the transfer window. Howson can join them for all I care - clearly doesn’t want to be here.

Shotton was always brought in as cover and I'm not sure we chased his signature for a long time, I got the impression it was always going to go through subject to Birmingham completeing a deal or two.
I do however think he wasn't the best choice and we over paid. I would expect him to be behind Ayala and Fry in the pecking order on current evidence, not that Ayala has covered himself in glory.

Have I missed something or is this just yet another pathetic post by dragged up?

Howson does want to be here...that's the exact reason why he asked to leave Norwich.

There's a reason why Premier League clubs' interest in Gibson seems to have cooled and turned to Fry instead. As far as Shotton goes, the one game I've seen him play, I don't recall him actually doing anything wrong as such but I *do* remember quite a few aimless hoofs upfield which isn't the way central defenders are supposed to play nowadays, apparently.

"In the current mess we are in the Shotton scenario says a lot to me"

When my Blues-supporting mate mentioned we were looking at Shotton, he was shocked. Boro had a reputation of having decent money to spend and getting quality players, when Shotton was a) third choice central defender at Birmingham and b) prone to all kinds of mistakes (which is why he was 3rd choice), yet Monk made him his first choice.

He's played once, never again. A bit like Baker. And both were obtained by Monk!

I don't think there's any real evidence that premier league clubs are interested in Fry. They will do their homework on pretty much all young emerging players, but these stories crop up nowadays whenever a young player makes a breakthrough.
