Ok, not aftershaves, EDP - but most guys don't know the difference!

There was a thread on here recently on mens fragrances and a fair few people contacted me so just putting a post up with what I've got going at the minute as some people obviously found it useful.

All completely legit fragrances, in glass atomisers with silver printed labels. Retail price on these is far, far greater - I just buy in bulk and sell on to pay for my own portion of each bottle, split them into smaller bottles and print labels, it can save a fortune vs retail prices as shown below.

Creed - Aventus (RRP £170 50ml)

Top notes: Apple Blackcurrant Leaves Pineapple Bergamot
Heart notes: Juniper berries Birch Patchouli Jasmine
Base notes: Vanilla Musk Oakmoss Ambergris

10ml £19
30ml £51
50ml £79

2ml sampler in a plastic spray - £5

Tom Ford - Tobacco vanille (RRP 175 50ml)

Top Notes: Tobacco leaf, Spices
Heart Notes: Tonka bean, Tobacco flower, Vanilla, Cocoa
Base notes: Dry fruit accord, Woods

10ml £19
20ml £37
30ml £51
50ml £79

2ml sampler in a plastic spray - £5

Xerjoff - 1861 Renaissance (RRP £170 100ml)

Top Notes: Tangerine, Bergamot, Lemon, Petitgrain
Heart Notes: Rose, Lily of the valley, Mint
Base notes: Patchouli, Cedar, Amber, Moss

Just doing this in 10ml size atm as they don't do a larger bottle and its a pain in the backside to decant manually, £22 for 10ml, or 2ml sampler in a plastic spray - £5.50

Dior - Fève Délicieuse

10ml £15
30ml £40
50ml £68.

2ml sampler in a plastic spray - £5

Top notes: Lavender, mint
Heart notes: Cherry, Freesia, jasmine
Base notes: caramel, almond, vanilla, tonka

This smells good enough to eat.

Ones that I am just doing in 10ml volumes:

(Prices all per 10ml)
Roja Dove - Enigma EDP £30
Roja Dove - Amber Extrait £30
Roja Dove - Amber Aoud £45
Christian Dior - Homme £10
Christian Dior - Homme Intense £10
Christian Dior Collection Privée - Mitzah (discontinued) £20
Christian Dior Collection Privée - Oud Ispahan £16
Penhaligons - Sartorial £12
Penhaligons - Quercus £12
Penhaligons - Blenheim Bouquet £12
Guerlain - La Instant Du Guerlain Extreme - £12
Shay and Blue - Salted Caramel £10
Amouage - Jubilation XXV £20
Amouage - Epic £20
Mancera - Aoud Cafe £14
Tom Ford - Amber Absolute (discontinued) £25
Tom Ford - Jasmine Rouge (ladies) - £18
Narcisco Rodriguez - For Her - £12
narcisco Rodriguez - For Her l'absolu - £10
Profum del forte - Vittoria apuanna - £15
Creed - Jardin di Amalfi - £25
Creed - Virgin island Water - £15

Collection welcome from Stockton TS18 area. Alternatively I can post out 10ml sizes for 90p first class or £2.20 first class signed for, or 30ml/50ml sizes at £3.50 first class or £4.50 signed for. 2 ml sample spray prices include second class postage.

10ml come in slimline glass atomisers. I've got 30ml bottles which are amber glass as they are less commonly sold as most people want the smaller or larger size, the 50ml bottles are the nicest of the bunch and I'm not just saying that cos they cost more (I make less the higher the volume, actually) - they're silver collared, thick glass and have a really fine misting spray. Printed metallic labels on all sizes.

Happy to show original bottles, you can confirm genuine etc.

Drop me an email at ashleypenny@me.com and I will send you some pictures of the sizes.

Some general info for people:

How much perfume oil is in a fragrance usually:

Extract/extrait/solid perfume – 20-30%

Perfume – 15-25 %

Eau de Parfum (EDP) – 8-15%

Eau de Toilette (EDT) – 4-8%

Cologne (EDC) – 2-4%

Body cream/lotion – 3-4%

After Shave/Splash – 2-4%

Soap – 2-4%

Whilst guys tend to refer to all fragrances as aftershave, aftershave is usually in a splash bottle and should not last very long as its main role is to act as an astringent after a shave. If you ever had a splash bottle of a fragrance and it didn't last a long time, that is pretty much why. You pretty much always want an EDT as minimum, but EDP will last longer and are usually better quality.

Nothing of the sort. I’m a fragrance collector and run splits on several sites. I buy 500ml bottles in bulk and split them into smaller bottles (a practice known as a split) so that everyone takes advantage of economies of scale.

The scents themselves are high end but the retail price for the smaller bottles is obscene and this is a way to get around that.

It's funny because I could show an original bottle. It doesn't mean what's in the sold sample bottles are the same product, a cheap market knock off copy for instance.

Someone would have to be pretty desperate to try this. What happens if someone suffers an allergic reaction? You'd be liable would you not? Haven poured the contents under lab conditions.

> Someone would have to be pretty desperate to try this.

Don't be daft. People do splits and decants all the time. They're usually not trying to make a profit on it, just cover the cost of the bottle and the supplies. Apart from the brand-name gift sets in Boots, it's hard to find fancy aftershaves in sizes other than small samples or big expensive bottles.

Its hardly desperate to want to save a fortune on retail prices of fragrances. As per my post a 50ml of Tom Ford TV is £175. I like having original bottles from time to time, but I would much rather have nearly 100 notes in the back burner.

As for lab conditions, this isn't a requirement. If you google there are several large businesses that do decants, and I know some of the people that run them and they do not use 'lab conditions', they do the same thing as me - sterile syringes and needles. This is high alcohol fragrance, theres not going to be a lot of bacteria in it as a result.

I am in a lot of fragrance groups and thousands of these transactions occur daily, and as per my post several people on here bought off me in november, certainly no complaints from any of those lads.

People are welcome to collect, confirm its authentic and watch me decant it in front of them if they like. I make a few quid for my time (which is all declared through my business), and they save a shedload on exactly the same product minus the packaging.

Traditionally women’s fragrances are EDP whereas men’s are EDT (and aftershave is itself it’s own classification which is weaker again than EDT).

More recently men’s fragrances are becoming EDP, such as creed, Tom Ford Private blends etc, but most designer lines tend to remain EDT.

Obviously EDP costs more as it uses more fragrance oil. That’s my understanding of it anyway 👌🏻 First said even the EDP women’s lines where there’s a direct men’s one is smallet so who knows.

1 million is a nice enough fragrance, trouble is it’s a victim of its own success and so popular that on any given night out most blokes will be wearing it and has gained a bit of a chavvy rep as a result.

£29 not a bad price for 75ml although recently you could get 200ml for £46 from the perfume shop in a flash sale which was far better value for money.

Anyway, trolling aside I have nothing against cheap scents. Scentstory's 24 Gold is an absolute gem considering its a tie-in with a TV show, and casually be picked up for about £20 or so, great winter fragrance. And Junaid Jamshad Oud Qadim is a great substitute for Dior - Oud Ispahan.

Have never tried anything for £4 (other than a sample) that I would put on my skin though, admittedly. Horses for courses though, if thats what you want to wear go for it, Aventus & its like are not for everyone, but those that do like it often enjoy paying a lot less for it.

If stored properly it will almost always be fine as long as it’s a legit product. There’s some notable exceptions for example some gourmand (smell like you can eat them) fragrances use natural compounds which can degrade such as vanilla, but most will be fine.

I’ve got a bottle of farenheit by Dior that was made in 1992 and it’s fine. Keep it away from strong light and it’s usually ok!

Best tip I can give anyone is the difference between EDT and aftershave. Aftershave as a phrase is misused horribly to mean any fragrance, but is actually a type of fragrance with only a small concentration of alcohol in it, designed to be used as an astringent after a shave, with a nice smell that will evaporate, leaving you free to apply a fragrance for the day.

Most designer fragrances are sold in aftershave (which are usually open splash bottles) and an EDT/Eau de Toilette version. The EDT will have more fragrance oil in and stick around a lot longer, but because aftershave is usually a few quid cheaper many blokes and those buying for blokes will mistakenly get the aftershave.

Simplest way to look at it is if it’s got a spray you’re usually ok whereas if it’s a pouring bottle likely to be an aftershave (with the exception of massive bottles of high end fragrances).

I quite like Davidoff Cool Water, but only ever had one bottle, but because it only costs £12 I'm deemed unworthy.

It's just labels on smelly bottles, it's complete nonsense.

And the adverts on tv? Dear me, what is going on there? Never seen anything so pretentious.
IP: Logged

Cool water isn’t a bad fragrance, but it is a cheap copy of Green Irish Tweed by Creed, but it’s popular. If you like it, try give GIT a spray next time you’re in fenwicks, selfrisges or Jon Lewis etc. It will be familiar but a lot nicer.

Not sure where the unworthy comes from, people just have different tastes? You’re calling wanting to smell nice silly in a forum where people get angry about how someone kicks a leather ball around or which party people vote for. It’s really easy to over simplify any interest but given that most posters on this board are male, majority of them probably won’t mind smelling nice to the opposite (or even sane) gender.

Also the price quoted is an example of what I’ve mentioned above - cool water aftershave is £15.99, cool water EDT is £25.99, so if you like it, make sure it’s definitelty an EDT you have.

Agree about the TV adverts, they only seem to roll them out how Christmas, Valentine’s Day, mother/father day etc and they are always stupid.

You can still get some original bottles of kouros on eBay, I had one briefly but was too overpowering.

Occasionally IRFA will decide that an ingredient can be an irritant and then all fragrances need to take it out, so they get reformulated. When this happens it’s never for the better; some fragrances that used to be beasts are now weak in comparison - a great example of this is JPG Le Male - used to be really strong but it’s a shadow of its former self. Fahrenheit too is a pale version of the original.

Its my opinion that many copycat scents often share note profiles with the scents they are copying, but are never made with the same combination or quality of ingredients. I, like many other fragrance fanatics, have been down that rabbit hole before of convincing yourself they are just as good, but fact is they aren't. Same goes for all these 100% fragrance oil you see advertised places.

They're good for checking out a scent and for having a cheapie, but never as good as the real thing.

The one notable exception for me is CDNIW, by Armaf, which is about 97% close to the scent of Tom Ford Noir de Noir to the point that I now use the Armaf. it doesn't last as long but its not worth the price difference for that 3%. Other clones I just steer well clear of now.

On Tuesday or Wednesday I will be getting a new 250ml bottle of Christian Dior - Feve Deliceuse. This range is only sold in a couple of locations in the UK like Selfridges, and the smallest size of 125ml is £200 RRP

Will be doing this in 10ml for £15, 30ml for £40 and 50ml for £68.

Main notes are bergamot, Tonka bean and vanilla.

Fair, you're saying you do this to reduce your own expenditure on fragrance - just how much of the stuff do you use?!

Cheers Tacker

Hopeso, I own around 80 fragrances. Not all full bottles as I tend to run a split on a fragrance I want to add to my collection. Some I already have but split the full bottle to help people out as not a lot of splitters round here compared to other towns.

Some are easy to split, some are a Royal pain due to bottle design, but it’s a means to an end.

Cheeky bump - Have taken a break after a busy Christmas as sold to loads of different people on here (surprising amount of ladies as well!) - I have updated the original post with what I have currently got available as valentines day is approaching!

Oud Wood is down to about 40ml currently and Tobacco Vanille down to about 50ml. Aventus about 100ml remaining at present, the rest should be plenty in.

If you are talking about niche high end stuff then it is generally Aventus, the price is obscene at retail price but its easy to see why it is popular as it is strong, lasts ages and is very nice. But obviously not worth what it costs in the shops!

Mainstream on nights out you will smell a lot of PR 1 Million. nice enough but nearly everyone else is wearing it.

I am quite fond of Chanel - Bleu de Chanel and Dior - Sauvage and rotate these as my work scents when I am in the office. Both aren't massively expensive and perform well.

See my note at the end of my original post though about aftershave - many people use that word not realising what it is, as it is a distinctly separate product, but confusingly most designer brands do an aftershave and an EDT in similar packaging, aftershave is cheaper because its weak and usually doesn't have a spray, so people buy it and just splash it on as if it was a fragrance, but it will always perform poorly compared to EDT.

If you smell like a women's handbag then chances are you are using women's perfume, and a cheap one at that.

Just to come back to this comment from ages ago

'I’d be interested to know your opinion on the cheap alternatives that are sold by housewives and office girls under the Federico Mahora brand.'

I've since had more experience with these FM sellers and can confirm they are definitely cheap clones. Whats worse, is its sold entirely via a Multi Level Marketing business model. The lie they are all told to sell is that all the fragrances in the world are made in one facility by a company called DROM. DROM gives FM access to every fragrance recipe and FM then sell it on cheap because they don't have to pay for marketing or stores. You couldn't make it up.

What they can never answer when I have asked;

1) Why dont rival fragrance houses just release each others top scents if FM can do it?

2) If DROM makes all the scents, what do the noses behind the scents actually do?!

3) Why don't stores buy FM products direct if they are the same as would be cheaper for them and higher margins of profit?

Amongst other things. It is a ridiculous business model and idea. I got sent 3 samples to try by someone and each of them were copycats and didnt last or perform anywhere near the original sprayed on my other hand.

Passable if you dont have the budget to spend and aren't bothered about performance, but that's the case with the majority of fakes and clones, they get the top notes right but they don't get the heart or base notes and don't develop as much or project as much.

That pretty much sums up what I thought when I read the information they pass out to potential buyers. It’s all talk of ‘fragrance families’, which is basically their way of saying it’s like the original but not exactly the same.

A lad from work sells them through his mother and to my uncultured nose, they’re not bad value for the prices you pay. They’re certainly better than some of the cheap fakes people bring back from their holidays. The main difference seems to be that the real thing will last all day or night with a few sprays and these ones need to be either over sprayed or topped up now and then.

yeah they arent terrible, but I think what they do is just do the top 3-4 notes of a scent to aproximate it.

FM 606 Tobacco Vanille for example - initial blast I was thinking very good copy. 10 minutes later it was night and day, 2 hours later it was completely gone. People are selling these on ebay disguised as Tobacco Vanille in decants and are getting away with it and its annoying because theyre doing it £3-5 cheaper than is economical to sell so you cant undercut them.

Real TV develops into a really deep vanilla throughout the day after the initial strong tobacco leaf subsides. FM606 was just all tobacco leaf with a hint of vanilla, then faded, then nothing.

Close, but not the one, as Roy would say.

Frustrating though because the sellers are ADAMANT that they are made with the same oils as the original and in fact claim they are better because they use a higher percentage of fragrance oil. Ridic.

All orders made yesterday have been sent out. I am down to 20ml of Aventus.

I am happy to make suggestions if anyone wants to try something - I can do 2ml samplers of some if you don't want to commit blindly to a large spend, or as many people did around Christmas time you are welcome to come over and try them beforehand [^]
