We beat Germany in a friendly prior to the Euros last year. I wouldn't read too much into friendlies, espacially at this stage of the season.

From a tactical view putting Alli and Kane in that team today wouldn't make a difference. If we're goingo to play that way I can't see how they'd work.

Theres a lack of quality in centre midfield which will hold that team back. Id have Alli, Lallana and Kane as the forward three but Southgate needs to find two midfielders who can actually get a grip of a game. Dier isnt one of them and would be best off in the back three with Stones and another either side of him.

He's played what is for the most part a B, or even C team and walked away with two draws against the best two international sides around at the moment and that is part due to the amount of injuries and withdrawals.

We were awful to watch though, no doubt about it.

The man who wins England the World Cup playing dreadful football will be a national hero for evermore.

Sir Alf and his wingless wonders were criticised for style; it doesnt seem so important now.

Establishment appointment. He won't win anything, but will cause no problems for the FA. My God, how our national side and its aspirations have deteriorated. I didn't even bother watching the game tonight.

Regardless of who is manager, England have little chance of winning the World Cup in Russia. We just don't have enough good players, particularly in the middle of the park, to go toe to toe with Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France or Spain and come out on top 3 games running, i.e. QF, SF, F.

What we do have is a handful of potentially outstanding players who should be at or approaching their peak in 2022, such as Kane, Alli, Stones, Pickford, Sterling, Rashford. We also have potential stars coming through the U-21s and U-20s, but especially the U-17s. Obviously not all of those will go on to be brilliant, but the way the U-17s played against the best of the rest - showing skill and guile and not just power and strength - means we could genuinely have a squad full of really good international footballers in Qatar, hopefully with 3 or 4 being world class.

I'm not saying we should write the tournament off in Russia, but it should be the start of a process of building towards winning in Qatar. For that reason I hope Southgate jettisons the likes of Livermore and Henderson, who will never be good enough for us to acheive anything at international level, with the likes of Loftus-Cheek and Winks being given a chance to grow from the experience of a tournament.

In 2010 Germany named only 3 outfield players aged over 26 in their world cup squad, which also included 9 players 23 or under. Even though they came third in 2010, they were building for the future and then won it in 2014. We don't have the quality to win it in 2018, and still might not have enough quality in 2022, but let's give the younger players the experience in Russia that will stand them in good stead in Qatar. Who knows - we might even surprise ourselves free of the shackles of past failures that some of the current squad carry with them.

we were poor in qualification..

we've just played top two teams.. in friendlies.. not scored, conceded but not been a competitive pair of matches..

see how we go in WC.. have a feeling GS will be back to type: slow, sideways & backwards..

Germany really turn it on when it matters, do not read much into it at all we drawn with them 0 - 0 in a friendly.

Didn't expect tonight to be goalless, mind. Not expecting much from England in the WC next year, though.

Argentina lost to Nigeria and Spain drew with Russia today.
France drew with Luxembourg in the qualifiers and we've beaten and drawn with Germany in the past few years.

I'm sure we could get a result.
Could probably rightly say that's because they're only friendlies, but I don't buy that we can't win in a one off game.
Portugal won the Euros last year and they were absolutely rubbish for the entire tournament.
They won 1 game in normal time throughout the whole thing.

Not that I in any way expect us to go the distance next summer, but stranger things have happened.

Probably the most sensible thing would be to give him a long term contract on the basis certain provisos and conditions were met and allow him to build and not look at short term solutions.

To succeed you need an infrastructure throughout the international set up, same patterns of play, same formations and same tempo, look at building a squad to fit that blue print, to do that you need continuity and support, not a knee jerk reaction but a long term vision.

Our younger teams have shown that they can adapt to tournament play, I think at times Southgate errs on the side of caution, but if the FA say look you have our backing go for it that might just allow us to construct something that can fully compete.

Looking at the way he is developing the teams, from U17 to the full squad, I'm more optimistic about England's chances of competing with the best than for decades. Organised, getting better tactically, happy to play a young team and encouraging skillful football.
That said, the inability of our team to string three passes together was exposed fairly cruelly by Brazil.

Southgate deserves credit for what he and the FA are trying to achieve. I am sure it is the right way. The elephant in the room though are the Premier League clubs who are afraid to give youth its chance.

In order to get game time players like Phil Foden will end up in the championship and risk having the skill clogged out of them

I just don't see that happening under Pep, col. Foden will get a chance this season IMO and could well become a regular in the City squad next season. He's too good to be held back and Pep knows that.

For me, it's great for the England team that some of our top clubs are managed by people that are not afraid to give youth a chance and also don't try to coach out any attacking flair.

I see a number of England youth players are now with Bundesliga clubs.

I think this will prove to be a good thing for the English game longterm.

Butland

Walker Stones Cahill Rose

Dier Winks

Sterling Alli Rashford
Kane

Still got Henderson who could cover in midfield, Lallana can change a game, Sturridge does know where the net is. Pickford is good back up in goal and Maguire, Jones and Smalling aren't horrendous.

Be tempted to play

Butland

Stones Cahill Maguire
Walker Dier Henderson Rose
Alli
Rashford Kane

Solanke has raw talent and might do something, Loftus Cheek looks tidy enough on the ball, even Wellbeck if fit can be somewhat of a handful if used in a certain way.

It's not a great England squad but the future looks brighter with the young lads and our squad isn't as horrendous as some are making out. They're two decent starting 11s if we find some rhythm.

Im quite liking the wing back formation hes adopted I must admit. How long have we been trying to shoe horn someone into left midfield for?

I agree the midfield looks a little short in terms of true top class talent but weve got Ali to come back into it. Playing the extra centre back allows Stones to step into midfield as well.

Winks looks like he has the attributes to make that midfield position his own. The fact he trains with Dier on a regular basis would only help their understanding in games.

If Loftus-Cheek keeps developing, he could be an option in that position. He looks extremely comfortable on the ball and has the athleticism to get up and down the pitch.

I'd also consider Alli for that position. Similar to Loftus-Cheek that he can cover a lot of ground. Another bonus that he plays with Dier regularly and he's done well for Spurs in that position. You'd lose some of his goal threat, but he scored against Liverpool from that position. It would also enable us to get another attacker into the side.

If Wilshere can prove his fitness and start regular games, then he's another option. As it stands though, I don't see how we can rely on him.

I hope Southgate goes with one of the above, rather than 2 from Henderson, Livermore and Dier.
