Endoscope - anyone had one?

Got to have a camera down the throat for a look around in my stomach. Anyone had one?

Whats the sedation like or did you just have the throat spray?

Bit worried [xx(]

i did it without the sedation, my advice, get the sedation. Your body knows its not meant to be in there and just tries to push it out. that throat spray does nothing!

Oh God yeah, get the sedation. Had it once with the spray and it was the single most uncomfortable experience of my life... and the longest. Thought I was going to choke!

Eh?!! If you thought it was a walk in the park Fozzy then you didn't get one! Simples. I've had more operations and procedures than most and that the was THE most uncomfortable.

Had it done 4/5 times last time was with the throat spray[xx(] next time I will insist on sedation hope that helps with your choice. Very uncomfortable while you are awake the benefit is you can go straight home afterwards if you are not sedated.

Funnily enough I had one down the little man two weeks back. Though in actuality there was nothing funny about the experience at the time.

On the plus side the 30-something female doctor that was jamming it down my urethra was far more gentle than the bloke who did it the last time. He ruined me for about two weeks![sad]

I've had gastroscopy without sedation, sigmoidoscopy without sedation, colonoscopy with and without, and flexible cystoscopy without. I found the endoscopy the worst without gas and air. If you have a strong gag reflex the gastoscopy can be torture, i found it ok (relatively).

Thanks all

A friend has suggested taking a diazepam before I go in, just to calm the nerves.

And yes I do have a very strong gag reflex

I had it with the sedation and it was fine. They don't put you totally to sleep so you are aware that something is going on but it sort of passes off as a weird dream in which somebody puts an umbrella down your throat and then opens it. Or at least that's what I experienced. If I ever need it again I will take the sedation without hesitation.

Have had it without sedation and it was uncomfortable, it's your choice and if you think it will be an issue then go with the sedation option.

Had three done here in past two years seems stand practice to to be anesthetized.
Whole thing takes about an hour.
No pain nor sore throat but feel a big groggy for a couple of hours afterwards.
No food for 12 hours before.

Having said that, it was on a Sunday and if I'd had sedation I wouldn't have been able to have me lunchtime pint.

With the throat spray, you get to watch your insides on the tele [smi]

Proper gag when they first put it down, and a bit uncomfortable when they add air and water to expand your stomach.

derek, i can assure you i did have one and used the throat spray. it made me gag for about five seconds, then nothing at all. sore throat for two days. A quick biopsy and confirmation of a hiatus hernia. trips to the dentist are far far worse than that. maybe i just got doctors with a more gentle touch than you ? [:X]

Up to you but I just went with the throat spray.
I think they keep you there for a couple of hours after if you have sedation.

It's not pleasant, but it's over soon enough.

You will gag, you will burp, you will dribble, your eyes will stream, but nothing they're not used to so just go with it and try not to fight it.

I hope it all goes well.

Endoscope - anyone had one?

I had an endoscopy whilst already in hospital (cannula already in place) and I thought "it's only a tube down your throat, how bad can it be" so I decided not to be sedated...[xx(] I already knew that my gag reflex was schite before I went in (I can't gargle mouthwash or water without gipping) but I thought once it's past my throat I'll be ok...I wasn't! As someone mentioned above, it's not meant to be in your body and your body reacts in a way to make you get rid of it, i.e., to gag and get the urge to pull it out. To be fair the nurse was very good at calming me down, she talks to you to keep you preoccupied and she helped slow my breathing down every time I remembered that I had a tube down my f*#%ing throat! The part that made me panic the most was the saliva pooling up in my throat and not being able to swallow it. It feels like you're gonna choke on it.

I had to go back again two weeks later for a follow up endoscopy and I was asked if I wanted to be sedated. The thing is I'm not majorly keen on needles (it always takes the nurse or surgeon several attempts to find a vein) and I didn't want to faff about having a cannula put in so I said that I didn't want to be sedated. As it happens you have to have a cannula put in anyway [cr] so, once I knew that, I enquired about being sedated and I was told that I'd have to stay in hospital for a few hours after the procedure if I had it. Lucky old me had to be somewhere not long afterwards though so I ended up having it done without sedation again! I don't know if it's cos I knew what to expect but I didn't panic as much the 2nd time round once I knew that the saliva in my throat wouldn't choke me. It's still a bit of a battle struggling against your bodies natural urge to panic though.

Anyway, good luck, mate. You'll be fine. [smi][^]

Just tell yourself that you're not gonna choke or drown in your own saliva and you'll be fine, mate. [smi]

They're gonna put a cannula in anyway so if you don't have to be anywhere afterwards you might as well be sedated. [^]

Also, I'm a bit of a wimp so it's highly likely it won't bother most people like it did me. [smi]

Had a sedative and when the nurse used the throat spray I said "you've missed a bit" and got an extra spray. I had been dreading it but it wasn't difficult at all. Afterwards it was the best I've felt for years and I didn't want to leave.

Had a few of endoscopes over recent years.
Always had sedation with no problem. Too many dodgy stories about heros who didn't need sedatives or painkillers.

Pointless not having sedation as after an hour's rest I was OK to get myself home with no ill effects.

Had colonoscopies too and they are a doddle, nothing to worry about there.😁

The worst thing about all this I thought was the preparation drinks taken th clear the system before my op and procedures.😫

I had a camera down my japs eye looking for an infection in my kidneys.

Everything was great until they went past my prostrate.....omg.

It's a much better story than that but life is too short.

As for an endoscopy, I accompanied my daughter for one, it was unbearable for me .

First time was down the throat with the throat spray. The spray on it's own made me gag like hell. Second time was with sedation but because I was sedated anyway. the third time was up the other end and was definitely under sedation as it was an experience I did not want to experience or remember afterwards [sad]

Ironops - I've had it done once, possibly twice (can't quite recall, it was a while ago). From what I do remember the key to avoid gagging is to concentrate on your breathing - deep breaths, slowly, and listen to the nurse who is there to monitor you and your reaction. Don't fret too much, it doesn't take that long. Good luck and hope all is OK.

I to had a flexible cystoscopy. The moment the doc jammed it through the sphincter down near the prostate was the single most painful thing I can ever remember. Worse than being bottled. Worse than a six inch nail through the foot. And even worse that standing on a plug.

I had the sedation.
It's strange, like someone said your awake but it's a bit dreamy.
When I was on the ward for a few minutes whilst the sedation wore off, a guy was moving his hand towards his face and then back, like he was on acid! [:D]

I've had it done 5 or 6 times down the throat and once up the bum (going for another bum one in a few weeks - not looking forward to that, but having gas and air). I had sedation the first couple but have been OK without it since, just had the throat spray. It's not nice, you do gag but it can be controlled with deep breathing. I like to be able to drive straight away. I guess everyone has different levels of tolerance.

As has been said -
1 - if your gut feeling is to have sedation then go with that. If you can stay calm and relaxed though you should be fine
2 - throat spray numbs the back of you throat so you will feel as though you canít swallow. You can though. It tastes foul.
3 - listen to the instructions from the nurse and concentrate on your breathing
4 - even when it goes well it is not pleasant
5 - I hope everything goes well and its nothing too serious [^]

Yup 3 times. Man up go for spray and think of Linda Lovelace.

Only advice is if they offer a trainee doctor. Decline, I said yes once he was down there so long I could have charged rent. He took 7 biopsys and told me I had cancer. Thankfully he was wrong.
