Strangest job you've ever had

Whilst I was at college, I worked for savoury kitchens, or SK FOODS as it's now known, which was in Skelton where the play factory is now. I spent my weekends making the mix for spring rolls for the like of asda and Sainsbury's. Cr@p job.

Strangest job you've ever had

Did half a shift at a cheese factory near Billingham when I was about 18. From what I could gather it was basically taking one cheese out of one box, one from another, then putting them back in a different box. That and being told whether you could decide when you could go to the toilet based on what colour mesh hat you had on. Bizarre, and Iím still convinced it was some kind of
Government funded job creation scheme. They still owe me for that half shift too.

Bundler.

Wrapping Bank note ( unprinted) paper reams ( 500 sheets) in plain brown paper.
By the end of the week I could do it blindfolded and at a fair rate of knots.

I'm poplar at Christmas time [^] My corners are oh so sharp

Welding the chassis on the Vauxhall Vectra because the robots couldn't do it. [;)]

We had 24 welds to do and we and to weld 144 chassis in a shift.

I could still do it now.

Driving around the streets of London after dark spotting streetlights where the bulb had gone. At the end of the run, you had to unlock the inspection panel from a designated lamp post, and post your report/collect new instructions. Like being a spy.

Strangest job you've ever had

When I did Weakest Link we all found out just how obnoxious Anne Robinson really was. She was horrible to everybody including the production staff who were sh!t scared of her foul temper.

She would have no pics taken with contestants (standard fare), nor sign autographs which star presenters inevitably do.

Just before we went on stage we were warned not to upset her. FFS. Red rag to bull I'm afraid. It was Primetime Weakest Link which meant we had a studio audience.

I was second up. She was particularly nasty to the nervous lady before me so I was primed. When she asked me my job I told her I was a wringer out for a one-armed window cleaner.

There were one or two nervous titters from the audience but my fellow contestants looked on apprehensively as Moo cow glared at me.

She asked again and I gave her the same answer. She was most unhappy with me and we battled each time it came to me.

Eventually she phrased a question which made little sense to catch me out and she succeeded.

Inevitably when the show came out the question hed been re-edited to 'make sense' but I enjoyed aggravating the ould bitch, probably more than I would have enjoyed winning it.

Working for Menzies. Scanning unsold newspapers that had been returned by newsagents, supermarkets etc. How do they know how many returns they had? By getting some monkey to scan the barcode of every single one that came back.

Interesting mix of staff. There was me, a few untrustworthy youths, a lot of poles and a former children's book illustrator.

Muggings here had to spent half the shift freezing his tits off outside unloading the newspapers into cages and wheeling them inside. The kids couldn't be trusted not to XXXXXX about and the poles were too fast at the scanning. So essentially I was dispensable!

Strangest job you've ever had

2 jobs, the first was The Bakers Oven in Durham when I left school, Every morning the poison dwarf would call us all to a meeting, and tell us it was her castle and we were her subjects and we needed to know our place. You couldn't take her serious. A 4ft2 horrible little woman she was.
And the other job was working for Pipe Equipment Specialists over Teesside Ind Est, (it's still there)I'd been made redundant, this job was advertised mid 2000's era anyway a parts jobs, easily enough to do £8 a hour, anyhow I got the job, started and within a week they had me welding non stop from 8-5 on £5.50 a hour and in between do odd jobs around the warehouse and offices. (This included emptying the sanitry or tampax bins woteva they are called in the lasses toilets. They said I needed to build up to the higher wage after my 9 month trial period. After 2 years I'd had enough and went back to the automotive trade. Daft thing was I should have sued their XXXXXXs off them as they proper injured me trying to cut corners. And when I eventually did hand my notice in, I stayed a bit longer to help get a big job done that was going to Asia and they didn't talk to me for my last 2 weeks.

I was sent to the glasshouse in my youth and we spent a couple of weeks working in the piggery ,big brutes,I'd guess half a ton of pig,we'd open 1 pen, they'd send a lad in to get him out, usually whacking it in the butt with a big board, send it running down a run to the next pen, where the female would be waiting.
The fella would have a crazy look on his face telling the young lads to grab the pigs dick and put it in the female...a lot of mess if you get my drift

Strangest job you've ever had

My uncle was manager of an egg factory in Retford in the late 90s, I went and worked there for 6 weeks inbetween years at Uni (I think I got back from my first lads holiday in Falaraki on a Friday and started there the Monday after).

The smell when you walked in was literally like being punched in the face.

Had to clock in on the morning, clock out for morning break, back in, back out for dinner, back in, back out for afternoon break, back in, then out at end of the day. Brutal, makes you appreciate flexi time that's for sure.

Did a few daft bits like moving carts round, putting boxes in skips and stuff, generally just mooching about being privileged at being the boss's nephew - luckily got on with all the lads in the warehouse and the women out the front but f... me, how people do that for a living I don't know. The women were literally stood all day picking eggs off a belt and putting them in egg boxes.

Good people though

Strangest job you've ever had

On the temp jobs desk in the jobcentre that was in Soho, London, years back.

I was far too normal to work there really, my workmates included a tragic Irish alcoholic poet who we found passed out one day in front of a bewildered client; a huge woman who modelled for Lucien Freud and was in equal parts arty and malevolent; a racist old gadge who wore full tweeds every day and couldnít be put in front of clients after his lunchtime bottle of wine without causing a major incident; a couple of indie girls who were in a band and hung out with the Libertines etc in Camden; a real XXXXXXney spiv who in retrospect Iím convinced was in the employ of some of Sohoís dodgier establishments and claimed first dibs on any attractive young jobseekers.

As far as both jobseekers and employers went you never knew who you were going to end up with. You really did get all types coming through the door, people from all over the world washed up in London and needing some cash as well as the itinerant Soho regulars in all shapes and sizes. The kind of employers who used the service were the ones for who the attraction if it being free was more important than the quality or reliability of the candidates we sent them.

Never a dull day really, I kind of miss it looking back.

Best thread on here for ages.

I worked for a week or two in a warehouse, taking cauliflowers out of a plastic box and putting them into cardboard box.

I then progressed to cutting the yellow leaves off cabbages, which came down a conveyer belt by the ton.

There was no such thing a minimum wage at the time. [V]

I did a shift at the Turkey Factory when I was younger. There were lots of areas for the various stages. The area I was in, the Turkeys had just had their legs and heads chopped off. We had to stick there legs up their bum and tie them up. If any still had their feet on, we had to report it.. I saw plenty of feet but just carried on.. I often thought how many people would cook their turkey on xmas day to still find the feet attached ! [:O]

Worked in a place outside York a few years later sorting and packing boiled eggs. Horrible job. Lasted three days.
