We had a strong supporters club in Scarborough in the 70’s that ended with relegation under Murdoch sadly. We had regular full coach that would park at Bee Lines depot on Linny Rd. A fair few still travelled in cars and I think a good few still do.

Scarborough used to have a Dirty Leeds stranglehold in the main, However most these days under say 40 yr olds seem to be Man Utd glory boys. I know quite a few that travel from both here and Whitby mind

There are not hundreds of Boro fans in Whitby and Scarboro there will be Teessiders that have moved there. I went to school in Whitby and a supporters bus went in the late 1970s based at the First In Last Out with 20 to 30 fans on it - when that stopped there was a United Service Bus I used sometimes in early 80s and mid 80s - it really didn't pick up Boro fans till Loftus - that was in Malcolm Allison, Willie Maddren days.

Nowadays there are a lot of Boro fans in Guisborough more than used to be and its 01287 - I get the impression in the Riverside era a lot more fans were picked up in East Cleveland and places like Stokesley and some of rural North Yorkshire also Billingham, Haverton Hill and Port Clarence.

I always thought the heartland of Boro support was the Middlesbrough Borough Council area, Thornaby, Eston, Grangetown, Redcar, South Bank, particular areas that had taken a lot of Irish immigrants in the nineteenth century. The football club gave these immigrants a new identity and helped them settle in. To a lesser extent it helped immigrants from other areas of the UK too that came to the Middlesbrough area prior to 1914.

My great gran parents came from Scotland, Birmingham, South Yorkshire on one side of the family - the other side Middleton in Teesdale, Stokesley and Cleveland villages.

Do not forget not dismiss Liverton Mines.

When they’re not bumming their grandads, tearfully screaming at passing aeroplanes or knitting the town flag out of flailed human skins - they are as passionate and fervent a set of a Middlesbrough supporters as you will find this side of Hinderwell.

I’ve always had the impression that Boros heartlands are North Yorkshire down to the natural border areas with Leeds like Ripon and much less spread north of the Tees so mainly just Stockton, Billingham maybe as far as Sedgefield and around there.

Darlington has for some reason always supported Newcastle (or Darlo obviously), but the Durham coal field has always gravitated towards Sunderland in my view.

I think if the Boro were just relying on the MBC catchment we’d probably average about 5k.

At long last from 10-12-17 you can get a train to york from boro that enables you to take in a night game.

Loads of boro fans in york I remember the league cup final at least 40 Boro fans in the mikkelgate pub.

In the early nineties in the queue at the turnstile at Upton Park to see Boro v Charlton, I got talking to a lad from Shildon. He said that from Shildon on a Saturday, would be a train full of Newcastle fans, a coachload of Sunderland and a minibus of Boro.

I had a mate who was born and brought up near Consett. One uncle took him to Newcastle, another to Roker. How did he make up his mind? He didn't. He supported both.

I once played pool against a Boro fan from Stanhope [in Stanhope]

I guess the reason why Newcastle might be popular in Darlington is because it's quick and easy to get there [if a little expensive]
Not so Sunderland and the ride to Middlesbrough's no quicker.

I know of at least one Boro fan who lives in Old Trafford, SouthLondonSmoglet.

Strof, for one reason and another, I don't speak with a strong Teesside accent [unless I'm trying to wind our lass up], nor with a London accent unless I'm fakkin' abaht.

The mystery man from Shildon did ask me about the way I talk though.

Coincidentally, inside the ground that day I did talk to a guy with a London accent. I gave him a double take. He said something like "It's alright, I'm Boro, I get it from my uncle." I think he had a beard too.

It never stops amazing me the density of Boro's support and the love for football on Teesside

The guy that said there were only 5k regular fans in Middlesbrough Borough Council area is incorrect - lets say we have nearly 24k regulars say around from MBC that's 9.6k or 6.5% of the total population. Wasn't there a survey in 1997 and 93% of Boro season ticket holders lived within 7 miles of the ground. It will be less now as people have moved away for employment etc However 93% was the highest in the Premier League.

Historically Newton Aycliffe is predominantly a Skunk stronghold presumably because of the cleansing of the pit villages in the 50s, 60s and 70s, with Scum followers in second place. Lots of Black and White stripes in the town centre but can't imagine many attend games.

That's cos Boro are a North Yorkshire club, so we have more of an affinity with those to the South. Over the River is Co Durham, and people there tend to gravitate more to Sunderland. I believe the Mackems have a big supporters club branch in Billingham.

Plenty of Boro supporters over here in Australia. I met an old fela by chance once who left the Boro as a 10 pound pom in the early 50's, was an Ayresome Park regular but had never been back to the UK since he moved to Australia like 60 odd years ago! Say he never has had the desire to, but still follows the results and so on....

Back home Whitby is deff more Boro these days, plenty of Boro around Northallerton, Thirsk, Richmond, Stokesley and Helmsley but Ripon is I think a bit more Leeds to be honest. Guisborough and around there had more Leeds fans for sure in the 70's but not these days.

People from north of the river get a bit senstive, but Middlesbrough was/ is always seen as a North Yorkshire club, regardless of discussions and disagreements on where it is now. That is not to say support did not come from the likes of Stockton and Billingham and so on because there always has been, but traditionally Boro looked to the town and south of the Tees and Sunderland were always the County Durham team along with Hartlepool, that is what my old man always says they said in the 50's and 60's when he started going anyway.

Middlesbrough is in Yorkshire (North) - always has been and always will be... I assure you the river and the town will not be Geographically moved.

plenty of Boro fans across these islands (I know of some Boro in Jersey) mainly due to our economic decline and opportunity - we dispersed to live and survive....The Wandering Smogs !

I don't believe we have 'strongholds' outside of the post code or the dialling code...we're not that kinda club.

gotta be 50+ Boro in Brighton & Hove - more across Sussex if you add in Lewes, Haywards Heath , Crawley/ Gatwick , Horsham etc - but no stronghold - Sussex is Spurs, Wham , arsenal and Chelsea - many of those fans now go to watch BHA - but albion will always only ever be their 2nd team.. #le putain de boro

what is all this never ending bickering all about. We have precious few fans as it is without tearing ourselves apart. Teesside both Yorkshire south and Durham north are bound to the same river speak the same (minor variations accepted) work and shop in much the same places, for gods sake we can also support the same flaming team can't we. Mr Gibson sure opened a can of worms when he decided to open his gob. Stockton always being Boro fans, but Billingham wasn't as much. Noticed on Benefits Street plenty of Boro shirts.

To me MFC is Teesside's club, it's not a Yorkshire club, when was the last time Yorkshire Cricket played there. I never felt anything in common with people from, places like Bradford and Leeds and Sheffield.

Redwurzel what has YCC got to do with it anyway

Indeedido is spot on, we are a Yorkshire club as the town itself, the ground etc is in North Yorkshire. You can not change fact.

Having affinity with Leeds Bradford or Sheffield is not relevant either. I am a Yorkshireman born in Middlesbrough and have no affinity with the wessies from Leeds either. If affinity through birth or residence had anything to do with things Old Trafford would be half empty.

Celebrate the fact we are a broad church, I think most remainers should love that idea, to suggest anything else would be hypocritical of them ( Not aimed at you by the way, just a general comment) [:D]

All those that come from an hour or even 1 and a half away it's very commendable and I bet it's lovely where you are.

But!! you will never be accepted by Teesside and North of the railway lines[pa]

Redlips I was probably one of them.

There appears to be a little corner of Thornaby down here as everyone I speak to originates from there.

Lostprophet definitely. We'll have to get a meet up on when we're on the TV.

I was born in Middlesbrough in the County Borough of Teesside, never Yorkshire. I was working in Bradford today, the accents are completely different, the architecture is completely different, but if I go to Stockton both are basically the same. I've no idea why I'm meant to feel an affinity to a county down South that was abolished before I was born instead of the urban area I'm part of.

Also, Worthing has at least one non-Teesside Boro fan.

Unfortunately not redlips, however there's plenty in Selby that do.

I tend to go in The Griffin (I think subconsciously because it reminds me of my days drinking in Thornaby).

redwurzel misses the mark with cricket slant.

Yorkshire have only played at Headingley and Scarborough since 1996.
Yorkshire last played at Bramall Lane in Sheffield in August 1973, carrying on at Abbeydale in Sheffield until 1996.
Yorkshire last played at Acklam Park, Middlesbrough in 1996, the same year they finished off at Harrogate, Bradford and Sheffield.
They finished playing at Hull in 1974 and Huddersfield back in 1955.

I presume by your reckoning Redwurzel that Bradford, Sheffield and Harrogate cant take themselves seriously as being in Yorkshire either, if we can't.
And as for Hull and Huddersfield, well they must obviously be even less Yorkshire than us.

Good point re the cricket. Confused why North Tees folk and misguided Yorkshire people push this tees-side side agenda.
We are a club on the cusp of Yorkshire with great fans either side of the Tees

I brought Cricket up because it uses County names. Yorkshire Cricket to me was always centralised on Leeds and for the high summer months in Scarborough where often Leeds people went on holiday. It had its outposts in places like Hull, Middlesbrough and I even count Sheffield, but when it could not support a lot of grounds to ones on the edge of the County were the ones first to go.

I still maintain Stockton has more in common with Middlesbrough than another other city or large town in Yorkshire. In fact I would even go as far as saying Middlesbrough has more in common with Sunderland than Leeds.

Thats the thing redwurzel, ‘to you’ to me it is not as you describe, why does that make you right and me wrong?

More people were born in Middlesbrough In North Riding of Yorkshire than have ever been born in Middlesbrough Teesside going by birth certs.

Whats in a name. Younger people denying their historical roots is sad really. Did you vote remain per chance to be in the european broad church [8)]

Ticker [:D]

You are doing well on the bites [;)]

I was born in Middlesbrough, North Riding of Yorkshire, and I am reassured by many people confirming that Middlesbrough was on the side of the river Tees even back then, [:D] However the County Borough of Teesside was scrapped in 1974 and ceased to be.

You do well for a Durham lad and thankfully for you Boro being the broad church we are are welcoming to waifs and strays from across the world, even reformed and informed Mackems like your good self. Its part of our missionary work to spread the gospel according to Saint Steve to all four corners of the globe, including the North of the Tees indiginous tribes although Billingham has always been a concern [8)]

Red....bang on, Middlesbrough is essentially a North East town, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield are Yorkshire. As part of the North East Middlesbrough has far more in common with Sunderland and even Newcastle. I have lived in Leeds for years but never really feel Yorkshire, the accent, the culture is different. When I was a kid York was the South but Sunderland and Newcastle seemed local.

Middlesbrough isn't on the Tees, South Bank and Port Darlington are.

I was born in the NR of Y but I`ve lived in County Durham long enough for it to wear off.

North of the railway tracks will always be Port Darlington, you may change the name to Middlesbrough but its still Port Darlo to us[pa]

Stockton invented the Friction Match the Railways started there plus we invented fine furniture and helped with space shuttle engines.

Middlesbrough created dust smog and noise / rust. I`m crossing out Middlesbrough on my birth certificate and putting Stockton on Tees... so there.
