If youíre looking to fill your footballing fix this weekend then can I suggest the above as a good place to go, kick off is 3pm and the home ground is at Bishopton Road West, entry is £6 Adults, £4 U65 with Kids for a quid (or free if theyíre with an adult)

Bootle are competing at the same level over in the North West Counties Football League and are a high scoring team in what should be a entertaining and competitive game.

Northern League teams have a great recent record in the competition with representatives in the last 9 finals at Wembley.

What round is it?

Whitley Bay, Dunstan, Spenny, north shields, morpeth and south Shields have all won this in the last 7 years. Great effort from the north east.

A mate of mine was telling me the FA have concerns over the relative strength of the Northern League and are going to prevent clubs declining promotion to the more national leagues.

Not sure how true this is but they certainly have a proud record in the Vase.

2nd Round Tryasize.

The lack of money at Northern League level and the extra burden of travel means itís no financially viable for clubs or players in the Northern League to step up, hard enough getting a team together once or twice a season to travel to Alnwick or Penrith but having trips to Colwyn Bay and Liverpool, especially midweek puts a huge strain on resources.

The FA might want to change the situation but without better financing and a more sensible geographical approach then itís not going to happen.

The FA needs to understand some clubs are going to be limited to different level's because of they finances.

You need time to build a club up at these levels, if the club continues to grow and has the backing financially then the club can move up next level.

It is pointless trying force teams to operate at levels they know they can't operate at because of the finances required for that level.

I think Marske United will win the Ebac Northern League Division One this season. Would it be fair to force them to move up to the next level if know they can't finance it.

It's tough call because Marske United won it in 2014-2015.

It becomes more difficult to defend when you see clubs that keep winning the Northern League Division One that can finance playing at the next level but refuse to move up because they are just happy being amongst the best teams at the current level.

What the FA needs to look at are travel and ground requirements. Those are two of big costs the FA have more control over.

There was an interview with a club chairman on football matters last year on the issue of promotion and he said that he would need to budget approx. £18k per annum just for travel. When you are only getting 200-300 supporters through the gates this is not affordable.

Anyway been going to Stockton Town when I can over the last three years (In between Boro games) and really looking forward to the game Saturday. Hope to see some of you there. Up the Anchors [^]

A few years back I was speaking to few lads that are involved in running and playing for Ebac Northern League clubs and they told me that for clubs to play at next level which is Evo-Stik Northern Premier league you need at least an extra £60k just to cover the basic running costs for a season.

Bridlington are in the Northern Counties East League, whilst I was living there they won the league and declined promotion I don't think they've been in the same situation since to accept one! They get crowds in the region of 120-200 but did have Scarborough Athletic paying them rent to play there up until this season

That what FA are saying the clubs are doing."

This is what FA are saying Northern League clubs are doing.

Lots of teams have been accused of it but Spennymoor Town where accused of it by many people after years of dominating the Northern League and despite winning title after title the club did not apply for promotion as they said they wanted to be financially stable before they took next step. Everybody knew they had finances to play at next level.

Several clubs who have won the Northern league have declined promotion in recent years.

There is disquiet amongst other leagues at step 6 & 7 because the NL contains a lot of players well capable at playing at a higher level. However, a lack of local clubs at Northern Premier league level restricts their opportunities of moving up.

I think clubs from other leagues are getting frustrated at the strength of clubs that have come from Northern league.

The clubs from Northern League seem to be moving through league at a faster pace now.

Just look at how clubs like Darlington, Spennymoor Town, Blyth Spartans, South Shields are moving through the leagues/divisions.

I'm going to the Stockton game on Saturday. It's been tough season so far for Stockton with injuries and players having other commitments which has meant the squad have had to dig deep at times.

I think lads are doing ok for they first season at this level and should be good enough to finish in top half. This season will give them something to build on for a future push for promotion.

Spennymoor Town are a young club, understandably they were reluctant after what happened to Spennymoor Utd, who couldn't afford to stay in the Northern Premier League and the club folded, unable to put out a side in the middle of a season.

They've since gone up, gained further promotion and are now doing well, they won the top division of the Northern League 3 years on the trot.

Bedlington Terriers were more succesful, they didn't go up and are now in Division Two. Durham City did, they're now having to groundshare with Willington.

Bishop Auckland went up, they ended up ground sharing with a number of clubs, including Shildon and West Auckland. Their fortunes were boosted by Darlington moving in as tennants, they'd struggle if they moved up.

Clubs from the Northern League have been involved in the last 9 finals. That's why the jealous eyes of the southern based FA are looking to change the rules.

Spennymoor are backed by business man with enough money cover the costs, their spent more money on reserve u18s sunday teams than most clubs do on they first teams at that level. Some people claimed one reasons was the they wanted to win FA Vase before moving up.

Bedlington Terriers proves the FA's point perfect. At one point they even had American billionaire funding them.

Most clubs are limited to a level because of the size of they catchment area.

A rich man's temporary play thing shouldn't be the criteria used.

Have a look at the gates Bedlington have been getting, and at 5 quid a pop is that enough to sustain long distance travel and maintaining a ground.

West Auckland have twice been in the FA Vase final in the last few years, Dunston, Morpeth and North Shields. Whitley Bay won it three times on the trot but couldn't win the Northern League.

During that time only 3 teams remain in the Northern League who have finished champions. Marske, Shildon and Newcastle Benfield.

So for me, it's all about jealousy, and the fact that they don't like to see the trophy going northwards.

I agree. But when you look at those other clubs/leagues/FA's that complaining they seem to have a valid point. You only need to look at what is happening when Northern League teams accept promotion.

It looks like South Shields are going to get prompted again this season, I'm pretty sure who every are the next Northern League club that are willing to accept promotion are likely to follow in their foot steps and get promotion again quickly.

I think it all stems back to the fact Northern League used to ranked higher than were it has been placed in current Football Pyramid system.

I'm looking at what is happening. I'm looking at the gates our top clubs are getting and can't see one Northern League past winner able to compete at a higher level that hasn't taken the leap, and some who have done who are either now out of business or haven't been able to keep hold of their grounds.

It's not about a rich bloke coming to the club who then drops them in the clart, as we've seen all too often. It's about the ability of a club to pay its way when the bills go up.

Synners, another example of the local wealthy bloke suddenly pulling the plug. They may survive at this level, not a chance at the level above.

The NL was originally going to feed straight into the conference! However the league management refused to join the pyramid. By the time they eventually agreed, the FA placed them way down.

Who ever finishes top of the northern league this season WILL get promoted and as 12 of the best 14 second placed team at step 5 go up it looks as though the top 2 will go up. Yes ifs alot of money but you have to run your club in right way then yoh can cope with the move up to the next level.

I wonder what sort side Sunderland will put out when Stockton host them in Durham Challenge Cup. It should be good night with a few extra in crowd just because its against a football League club.

What is likely to be U18s or U23s?

It's great to see that Sunderland agreed to switch the tie. The extra money will mean a lot more to club like Stockton Town.

Fewster got crocked didn't he? He's been a disappointment there.

I was surprised he landed so low, considering he had a very good spell with York in the football league, and looked decent for us. Although Spennymoor have a rich benefactor, and he gets to stay local.... may turn out to be a bad move for him.

On the other hand if all the northern league title winners since say 2000 with adequate grounds had accepted promotion then the Northern Premier League would be very well populated with teams from the northeast and thus their travel costs would have been nowhere near as much of a burden.

It might be getting on for 10 years now but Durham city were really well backed, not amazingly financially but had very good business people running the show with a good fan base and a great vision. They had a fantastic team that had two players for every position. They accepted promotion from the northern league and won the unibond first and would have won the unibond Orem but the fa wouldnít admit teams with a 3G pitch. At the time there were a couple of other teams nationally with the same issue. This being the case, the backers all pulled out and the dream of league football died and the club is in the position it is in. Wandering around with no home after being taken over by Olivier Bernard.

I went to Thornaby Town v Whitley Bay FA Vase.
What a great game. Thornaby came back from a goal down to deservedly take the lead and almost pulled off a giant killing but for an agonising 90th minute equaliser.
In extra time Whitley Bay took the lead but then Thornaby had a header cleared off the line (I think it hit his own player) the ball went straight up the other end and Whitley Bay finished the game.
Amongst the crowd were about 30 Mad Boys with their Red Faction style chants about Thornaby til I die led by a megaphone. All added to the spice of the occasion.
