Leadbitter & Downing

...haven't been on a losing Boro side this season.

Howson has been on a losing Boro side 3 times. Traore has been part of just 4 Boro league victories since he arrived, including 2 late sub appearances & 2 starts (Bournemouth last season & Bolton this). Interestingly, Guedioura was on the winning side (all starts) in each of his last 5 championship games only 2 years ago & his total championship record for Watford that season was P17 W12 D2 L3.

I'm not saying that any of this is conclusive - that'd be very naive. But it's food for thought all the same [fb]

Leadbitter and Downing were so impressive at Barnsley - in fact as some suggested at the time - was that Stewy's best ever game since returning to Boro? Can that be the glimmer of light that comes out of Oakwell?

ive been critical of the complete lack of influence Downing has had in pretty much every game since his return given his pedigree and talents , but credit where its due, that was his best performance for a long long time.
tbh playing him centrally behind the forward line is the only option left to give him a decent stint in the team, yes he is a wonderful crosser of the ball but playing him wide seems to allow him also the option of playing too many simple sideways or backwards pass the buck passes so he needs to be in a position where his immediate and obvious option is to look and pass forwards, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY he needs to strive to cement that position with consistancy.
Grant when playing takes a lot of the workload and stress off Clayton but as with Downing isnt going to be the long term answer but as far as stabalising things for the time being seems the sensible choice for now.

I thought both Leadbitter and Downing had good games. I disappointed when Monk pulled Downing off because he was the one pulling stings at the time.

For me, if this is to work, then the trusted & senior heads now need to bed back in - get us playing again like we know we are capable of. It might be painful for a few games more whilst this is allowed to happen, but I believe that we have the players to see how it could start to work again for us.

I was encouraged with Monk's team selection on Saturday actually, though I'd have played Bamford over Fletcher & although George has had a bad start to the season, I'd like to see (as a senior player like I mentioned) him given a chance to prove his worth once more - I'm not sure that left back is Fabio's best position. I personally would like to see him utilised on the right (his natural side) in a more offensive role with less defensive responsibility.

I think having Downing in this side allows for us to play him either in a 4-3-3 midfield or 4-2-3-1 attacking midfielder.

I thought Fabio cried off again. He's done this to many times now.

I think it is time to get Friend back in, at least he has the guts to keep going to the end.

the 2 most composed passers of a ball at the club, cope with the kick and rush of this division in their sleep and Grant influences the others a lot, they're much more composed when he plays

Friend gives us more balance to the team than when Fabio plays.

I didn't think Leadbitter played exceptionally well but he is one hell of an organiser and a tough task master to the players around him.

I have said on other threads and are happy to hold my hand up regarding Downing. I think the last twice he's played he's proved a lot of his doubters wrong.
