I wonder if there's a limit on how much cash Paul Merson can make out of retelling the same Gazza stories over and over.

'Reveals'

This has been common knowledge for well over a decade.

It's depressing. You have to wonder about the mentality of the people around the club at the time, including the manager and chairman. Your best player and biggest asset (Merson) is an alcoholic and you not only bring the most renowned drinker in football into the club, you put him in a house with him.

And then wonder why he leaves 6 months later.

Given that the manager was a huge boozer they were following the leader's example

Yep but you would've thought with him being a boozer he's perhaps have been even more aware of the potential damage.
And you'd have thought Gibson, after splashing millions on the pair of them, would've taken an interest in their personal situations, given their histories.

Think everyone knew about this one already.

Mersons brother had a lot of stories to tell that make this one seem like a mothers meeting.

Well surprisingly enough not everyone is familiar with the anecdotes of Paul Merson's brother.

You may scoff now but I bet it would have been a LOT of fun to be out drinking with them two

Lots of stories in Merson's "How not to be a professional footballer".

Never forgave Merson for the comments he made following his departure from the club. He was my hero as a child and I remember being devastated when he left the club.

Are we supposed to laugh at stories like this? What about when Gazza dies, is it still going to be 'funny'? Don't see any humour in the story.

Gazza, Jimmy Five Bellies and Merse. What were the club thinking?!

Gazza's book is still the funniest and most moving footballer bio I've ever read, and must admit I loved the chapters where he lived with Andy Townsend in a rambling mansion in Redcar (?) and they both got badly addicted to bingo.

The bit where he's in the poshest restaurant in Rome with Sheryl, with a gigantic fish tank as the centrepiece, and the waiter is taking his time coming to the table so Gazza jumps into it, brand new suit and all, catches a lobster, and sits at his table dripping wet until the waiter comes back and says: "That one, please" is still my go-to story about footballers.

Closely followed by the bit when he steals an ostrich from the zoo, puts Steve Sedgley's shirt on it, takes it to Spurs training and lets it loose, only to find it's quite hard to bring back to the zoo. "Have you ever tried to catch a XXXXXX ostrich?"
