My usual evening relaxing Gazette read ruined by these two clowns, why did I read the football first? One thinks Downing impressed the other that Downing put in some creative balls. WTF!!!! In somebody's back pocket journalism at its best!!

So their opinions differ to yours, that is what life is about. It would be a XXXXXX boring world if everyone agreed on everything. Accept that they see it differently to you and don't let it spoil you evening.

Downing certainly put in more crosses than for along time, many of them slightly over hit unfortunately.

When he was on the right I would have liked to see him have some shots with his left foot.

These overhit crosses. It might not be all of them, but there were at least two occasions where the cross went exactly where Gestede was stood a split second before the cross was hit, by which time Gestede had made a run towards the near post.

I thought he did well and offered us much more width and balance.

People blame the players for not being good enough but there's Downing yesterday coming out from exile to put in a good performance against a top side. Yet Karanka has been putting Stuani wide left. Beggars belief.

Was certainly the first thing that impressed me from Agnew, putting Stewy back on the left and getting him to put more crosses in. I NEVER want to see Stuani in that position ever again!

No guarantees in football but I can see us competing now. It's all to play for.
Downing is a proper footballer and if he's backed hes going to deliver.

Downing and Clayton were our best 2 players. He showed for everything.. constantly tried to switch play and get balls in the box.

Let's face it downing probably isn't used to crossing the ball as the previous manager didn't like it.

He did over hit a few crosses but even on the right he looked dangerous cutting in and fizzing balls across or spreading the ball to the other side of the pitch.

He had a quiet spell but came back to life when Gestede came on and he had two target men to aim for.

Think he'll be even better with Friend in the team providing support.

He struggled last season but I think he's mostly done pretty well this season when he's played, in the Championship he was a marked man at this level he gets more space. It can only benefit him playing under a more attack minded manager we just need to remember he isn't the same player he was 10 years ago when he'd beat the full-back for pace and whip it in. We need to get the two big guys in the box and get Downing to stick it on their heads.

I wasn't there but I can only speak from experience that sometimes in football over hit crosses provided that it's only slightly etc and not way off can add up and look worse when you haven't got bodies in the box apart from one .Now I'm not saying that was the case as only seen brief highlights but in the past when they been over hit etc it's because it's difficult to find one man in the box , because he ran the opposite way , to many players defending who clear it and obviously a poor cross but when you get bodies in the box and get a cross over that to could be over hit or not reach your intended target .It end up on another team mates head or foot and it's tucked away .
Everyone thinks brilliant but more often than not in games the cross goes over they intended target and his mate arrives I behind at puts it away.
On the box or at the game you think great cross but many times it's put away by another player not they intended one.
Also players just tend to put it into an area to be attacked and the striker doesn't move or goes they opposite way .If you have time then fare enough but you don't you just try to put it in an area however we normally only have one in the box and if the ball evades him then it's gone but other teams in Chelsea or even Hull with have others coming in behind or in front etc and it looks like it's been played to go specifically to that player and often that's not the case .
During play if we got two or three more in the box and players coming in back stick some of these crosses wouldn't be wasted.

Like I said above joking apart he's probably out of practice, he can still do it for me just needs a regular game to get his confidence back.
Downing has never had blistering pace and he doesn't need it, all he needs is a yard and he can get a decent ball in.

2 of the 'over-hit' crosses would have been fine had other players been running in on the back post (Gestede and Barragan).

Downing played well.

It's a thankless task crossing the ball in to one attacker stood alone in the box. If we played two up front then Downing is capable of quality balls even if he can't beat a man anymore. But he showed more attacking intent on Sunday than he has in ages and played decent. I think you'll see a much better Downing playing on the left not right with Traore on the right and two up top.

"One of our best players"..... Wow! What a sad state of affairs. A player who couldn't cut it in the championship, who people said would shine in the PL and show his class and has actually shown very little when he has played is "one of our best players" [:D]

pretty much what pog said above is what I thought of downings performance.

I thought he was quite lucky to stay on when gaston was taken off as he'd had a really quiet spell but he come to life again when gestede came on.

Regarding the over hit crosses - lets not forget there was a bit of a wind. The flags were flapping all over the place so it might have been difficult to judge the cross. United had some over hit crosses in the early part of the game too.

It didn't help that for the few over hit crosses he put in in the second half Traore was about 40yds from the goal.

Would have been nice to see our RW coming in at the back post to make something of those crosses.

Unfortunately his lack of a football brain means he was nowhere near the action.

Wind was also a factor as was blowing across the pitch in the direction that Downing was crossing. That said Young managed to nail his cross in the first half so maybe that is a sh!t excuse!!

I heard an interesting fact recently, all premier league games this season up to and including January, only 1 in 95 crosses lead directly to a goal being scored. They then took into account the next phase of play, and only 1 in 87 resulted in a goal being scored.

It's probably why most team choose not to play with direct wingers these days. Or it could be down to the fact that we only generally have one mobile striker in most sides, they don't generally feed off balls in from wide areas.

He's played in all our wins this season and hardly played since Christmas when we've been particularly poor; except for the Cup matches we won.

I'll take him being involved from now on, over him not being.

The gazette writers are poor.

Abused their position of power as local journos and fanned flames with "opinion pieces" instead of staying impartial and reporting the facts.

Crazy really that by far and away our most experienced premier league player was pretty much frozen out.

Not the player he was of course and I'm still not convinced he's really a left winger any more (man utd sitting deep in the second half allowed him the space), but when he has more of a free role and can drift inside, his quality is still obvious. A more 'creative' manager than karanka would probably have got more out of him.

'Creative manager'... what, like Allardyce? Downing should be looking to be getting the best out of himself.

Look at Merson, he was still drinking and god knows what else during his time at Boro & he ripped the championship apart & we sold him for a profit. He could still turn it on. Downing couldn't tie his laces.
