Did Cinque Terre with my ex last year, wanted to go for years and she managed to fcuking spoil it. Would love to go back, beautiful and plenty of places to just jump in and swim, I imagine the Amalfi coast is much of the same.

Agree on Sorrento as a base. Agree on train trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius. Don't bother with Naples. Local bus to Amalfi and Positano but with the big cliff drops at the side, not for the faint-hearted. Agree on hydrofoil trip to Capri but be sure to take out a second mortgage before you go.

Most of the hotels near the sea in Sorrento don't have pools so you will likely be a good walk to the main bit of the town but the exception is the Tromantano which has a lovely position and a pool but again you might be in second mortgage territory.

I spent my honeymoon there in Sorrento and it was fantastic.

All the historical trips are great and we took a really good boat ride from Sorrento to Positano. Stopped next to Capri and you got to swim in the sea on the way.

Really lovely town and there are plenty of nice cafes by the sea top if you just want to sit with an ice cream and fantasise about owning the boats in the marina. We stayed uphill overlooking the town. If you go up there get a hotel with a shuttle bus as it's a very steep walk!

Sorrento Grand Ambasciatori hotel, google it and then close down this thread - you'll thank me [;)]

Oh and get the train to Pompei, don't bother with an organised trip, the hotel will tell you how.

lovely part of the world, as for hotels worth doing a bit of research as theres a great variation of quality in my opinion.
ischia is worth a day trip, a lot less crowded than capri

I didn't mind Naples that much although the general consensus seems to be that it was tip, but the bits right on the coast where I stayed I thought were really quite beautiful.

Sorrento is outstanding, Pompeii was essential but don't do what I did and turn up on the first sunday of the month without checking as they close entry for 3 hours in the middle of the day, just when we turned up [rle]. Food was maybe the best bit, just avoid the main tourist restaurants and check trip advisor.

Great place, been a few times. Some lovely hotels in Sorrento as a base, then decent trips to Capri, a drive around Amalfi where they filmed the Italian Job, and Pompei.
Great food.
Nightlife revolves around restaurants, very few (if any) bars.
Saw Ian Ormondroyd there last time I went, remember him?
Stopped at The Minerva and another hotel that escapes me. Book early as you can have trouble getting in at popular times as it fills up.

We were there, Sorrento, last October. The best advice is use the public transport, trains and buses, from Sorrento to Pompeii, Naples and Amalfi.

The terrain is quite hilly and mountainous. Sorrento town is quite a distance, uphill, from the coastline and marina but a great place to stay. Whilst you're there buy a bottle of gin, along with a bottle of Lemoncello, and drink them mixed 50/50.

Nops

For a romantic trip and if its a really special occasion 4 years ago for our 20th anniversary I booked the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria. I'm still running on the brownie points I got.

The whole trip has kinda ruined everything since then. Hotels not as good as...., food can't touch ...., scenery isn't...

But the memories are totally worth it.

DC always fancied the GHE, was it as good as the price suggests? Did you get the sea view. They filmed avanti there btw.

Fly to Naples and get a boat straight to Capri, stay for of a couple of nights, it's a completely different place when you stay compared to the hordes that you'll follow around on day trip, then get the boat to Sorrento and base yourself there.

We had a 5 year old with us so we did book excursions, you pay a bit more but it made life easy for us, you'll also get fed - although the food on excursions tends to be terrible.

Pick a hotel with a roof top pool and view, you won't regret it.

We finished our holiday off by getting a train to Rome (2 hours from Naples) and spending a few days and flying back from there.

Hi Jam69

We has a bit of a sea view e.g in the room looking out the window it was straight onto the garden (lovely) but if stood at the window you could see the sea to the left.

Honestly felt the most special hotel ever.

I went in May so the prices weren't as astronomical and got a junior suite. Booked via I think Booking.com - Late rooms and saved a bit more then phoned the hotel direct for nice things to be put in the room etc & they didn't seem miffed about me not booking direct

I had no idea about Avanti, will have a look online for the movie.

Europa Palace Hotel in Sorrento is the best hotel round there. Close to the middle of town but has its own pool and jetty for swimming in the Bay of Naples.
