A Match Too Far At Fulham

It looked like one match too many as Boro fell to a 1-0 defeat at Craven Cottage on Friday. We struggled to compete with the speed, cut and thrust of a Fulham side that looked a step above for much of the game. After that hard fought 2-1 defeat at Tottenham it was a disappointing end to the week, especially for the big away crowd but maybe the three game week had caught up with the players. The feeling amongst Fulham fans the day after was that Boro were lucky to have got away ....

Spurs Too Hot To Handle

Boro bowed out of the FA Cup last night after gifting Spurs two early goals but thankfully we made a fight of it late doors. Conceding a goal through an error after only a couple of minutes is not the best way to begin a cup tie but hopefully it was an experience as positive for the mix of young and more seasoned Boro pros as it was for the fans that flocked to the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. We can now set about building a team to return and do battle in the league in the very ....

Boro Pegged Back By Late Rams Raid

The Boro players were applauded off the field at half time on Saturday after serving up a master class that was right out of Derby player-coach Wayne Rooney\'s school of excellence. A superb move was capped by a glorious Lewis Wing drive but Boro were ultimately to pay for missed chances when a wind-assisted equaliser found the net and then McNair\'s penalty was cancelled out very late doors by a last minute equaliser of superb technique from Holmes. A month ago Boro fans would have ....

Boro Hold Spurs

Boro turned in an impressive performance to hold Jose Mourinho\'s Spurs side to a draw at the Riverside yesterday. Mid way through the second half Ashley Fletcher latched onto a Saville throughball and raced away to score and Boro fans could dream of a giant killing. An equalising header from Lucas Moura meant that we can instead look forward to a replay at Tottenham\'s new stadium and we go into this evening\'s 4th round draw. It was a big occasion attracting a big crowd, the ....

Boro Make It Happy New Year With Win At Preston

It was a very Happy New Year for all Boro fans celebrating at the final whistle at Deepdale. And doubtless for all listening back at home. Boro followed a first away win of the season by inflicting a 2-0 defeat on high-flying Preston North End. A reward for Jonathan Woodgate\'s bold team selection bringing in Rudy Gestede for a rare start and the big man cracked home the opener, assisted the second and could have had a couple more goals from an outstanding display. But we were good all ....

Oh What Fun It Is To See The Boro Win Away

What an amazing performance and what a win. Boro saved it until the last game of the year to grab a first away victory of the season. We saved it until playing the league leaders. In front of a full house. Their Christmas showcase. Talk about spoiling the party but now everyone on Teesside is assured a happy New Year as the Boro battled to a brilliant 2-0 win away at The Hawthorns clinched by a real screamer from 30 yards out. We saved the best performance of the season until the big ....

Boxing Day Cheers For Boro

Boro delighted a bumper Boxing Day crowd by delivering the Christmas present all Teesside most wanted, another home win. A first goal by flying wing back, Djed Spence proved just enough to thwart Huddersfield Town and make it four successive home wins at the Riverside. Three precious points propelled us temporarily up the league to 18th place, before Reading defeated QPR with tricky back to back away games at WBA and Preston we needed that breathing space. But even if league leaders ....

Boro Comeback Shock\'s Stoke

Boro came back from a goal down to defeat Stoke City in a bottom of the table six pointer at the Riverside on Friday night. It was one way traffic with the visitors in the driving seat through most of the first hour of the game. Rather than sink us with their goal Boro brought on the subs and made a tactical switch to sink the Potters with two superb goals. Lewis Wing smashed the ball into the corner of the net following a smart turn and run by a rampant Tav. That sealed the deal ....

Boro See Red And Sink To Swans

It was a poor, poor Saturday for Boro, 2 red cards and a 3-1 defeat. What perhaps makes it even worse is that before Marcus Browne\'s idiotic rush of blood Boro were level and right back in the game.We had every chance of taking a point or points back on the long road to Teesside. Ayew finished emphatically to add to his dodgy penalty before Surridge finished us off. Then McNair\'s red card meant Boro finished with only 9 men on the pitch. It was a long way back from there. It is ....

Paddy Penalty Pointer At Forest

Injury ravaged Boro bounced back with a penalty to win a precious point away at Nottingham Forest last night. When an unmarked Ryan Yates headed past Pears mid way through the second half it looked as if all the hard work had been for nothing. Yet an inspired substitution of Marvin Johnson got behind the home defence and was chopped from behind. Paddy McNair calmly dispatched the penalty and it was honours even. A late equaliser and a great result that could look better and better ....

Young Boro Defeat The Addicks

Youth and experience proved a winning blend for Jonathan Woodgate\'s Boro after scoring early against Charlton. Boro reacted to defeat at Leeds by copying the table topping side in getting the upper hand almost from kick off. From the first minute goal onwards Boro were in control, played some great flowing and one touch football and should have had the game rapped up long before the 4 minutes added on were over. George Saville\'s first minute goal now leaves clear daylight ....

Boro Battered At Leeds

Leeds marched on hammering FOUR past Boro yesterday as we wilted in the heat of the onslaught and heady atmosphere. The title contenders settled any of their nerves when Bamford was clinical with a header in the opening minutes. The game was effectively settled with a deflected breakaway goal right on half time. In the second period Leeds picked us apart. A sorry end to a week that had offered some hope. A crushing blow to be beaten so emphatically by our old foes. There was a 35 ....

Boro Secure Vital Win

Boro finally clinched a victory last night holding out for a 1-0 win over bottom club Barnsley. In a match played in quite atrocious conditions it was a moment of calm and composure from Ashley Fletcher rounding the keeper to clinch the points. For the rest of the 90+ minutes it was a real battle against both the opposition and the weather to finally win our third game of the season. An oh so precious 3 points. Boro started with Ashley Pears coming in for the injured Darren Randolph ....

The Draw That Feels Like A Defeat.

Rampant Boro were pegged back by friendly fire when a red card on Marvin Johnson cost us dear and swung the pendulum in visitors Hull favour. Boro had gone up through a sublime Fletcher finished goal and were sitting pretty until Johnson\'s ill disciplined and unnecessary high challenge. The the tide changed and Boro were hanging on, backs to the wall, fans counting down the minutes on the big screen. High scoring Jarrod Bowen scored one then two but amazingly Boro didn\'t concede a ....

Boro Bounce Back With Draw At Qpr

We travelled down to London really up against it, third from bottom, four games without a goal, no wins away from home and an injury, suspension and sick list almost longer than the team list itself. It started raining just before kick off and the temperatures dropped, would we be put in deep freeze in the relegation zone from another away drubbing? No. Boro fought back against Rangers, scored goals and played football that deserved the reward of 3 points and not just one. Yes, ....

Rams Wreck Our Hopes

Boro fell to another defeat away at Derby after once again failing to score a goal. It was ten men Boro for the majority of the game after combative midfielder George Saville saw red for going in high and recklessly within plain sight of the referee. But it could have been so different if Britt had tucked away an early, early opportunity after rounding the home keeper. A defensive block blocked our main opportunity and it was ultimately to be another crushing defeat. Boro fans ....

A Point In The Right Direction?

Boro followed the late defeat to WBA with a goal less draw away at bottom three Huddersfield Town last night. Was it a good point or an opportunity squandered? Certainly we had the second half chances to win it and so build a gap between us and Huddersfield and the bottom three. And now we have gone six games without a win. On the other hand it was a far better performance and played out before a sell out away end. Huddersfield dropped the prices last night to a tenner away day with ....

Baggies Late Strike Increases Boro Pressure

Boro go to Huddersfield on Wednesday needing a result to stay out of the relegation places. That is the pressure pot position we find ourselves in after such a drastic run of results culminating in Saturday\'s late defeat by the Baggies. For 80+ minutes Boro competed really well. It was a far better performance all over the park and a positive response by a rejigged side after recent maulings. Yet that all went out of the window as we paid dearly for missed chances when Brom sub ....

Very Poor Boro

Boro crashed to a 2-1 defeat thanks to a late, late winner by Birmingham last night. Daniel Ayala had bundled the ball in from close range to equalise with only about 4 minutes to play. But in a frantic finale the home side found a way past Darren Randolph in injury time. In the first half the former Blues keeper had been left exposed and beaten from the edge of the box having kept us in the game with a string of reaction saves. It was a sickening finale for Boro fans to take and ....

Better

Boro did bounce back from Saturday\'s crushing defeat with a fighting draw against high flying Preston. It was a rain-lashed, half-deserted Riverside last night but those present witnessed a much-changed Boro respond to a Preston winner with a quick equaliser. We then stayed on level terms to the end of 4 minutes added on. Moreover, we looked far tighter in defence and competed all over the park. While still well short of the levels we glimpsed over the last two seasons, it was a ....

Wednesday Make It Saturday Disaster For Woodgate\'s Boro

Mid way through the first half I glanced up at the big screen, yes we were 4-1 down and there was still a long, long way to go. On every Wednesday raid forward Boro\'s defence was peeled apart and Darren Randolph brutally exposed to a shot, or all too often a header that left him powerless. It felt like being a Watford fan watching Man City run riot. Just how bad could this get? Jonathan Woodgate\'s Boro were completely undone and blown away in an early bird blitz at home to a ....

Boro Own Goal Misery At Cardiff

Ashley Fletcher\'s early own goal was the all important action in this drab league defeat in Wales. Although Boro did create plenty of openings in the first half it was the Bluebirds that had us panicking when they struck forward. After the break Boro tried to bring on increased forward options in Wing, Browne and Tav but the old warhorse Neil Warnock tightened his lines and shut us out, for what in the end was a comfortable home win for Cardiff City. Wales is not exactly a happy ....

Randolph To The Rescue In Boro Royal Victory

Middlesbrough took a priceless three points yesterday with a hard fought win over Reading, a rare Marvin Johnson free kick goal proving all-important. It was the 500th League game at the Riverside, a landmark stat that Boro marked with gifts to a few randomly selected Gold Card holders. Yet few of those long serving fans will have seen a goalkeeping display to match that of Darren Randolph whose amazing reflex saves ensured that Boro thwarted the Royals as they came on strong in search ....

Boro Held By The London Lions

Boro were held at home by Millwall on Saturday but the display and football standard was a big step up from the scrappy midweek win against Wigan. I don\'t know what you thought but I left the ground far more optimistic about the season in terms of both entertainment and Boro\'s league chances than I did after that nervy, error-strewn midweek victory. I thought there were lots of positive signs and performances out in the Saturday sun. It was a good contest throughout between two ....

Boro Up And Running

Phew! It may not have been pretty but finally Jonathan Woodgate\'s Boro recorded a first win under the new regime. Britt Assombalonga\'s headed conversion of Jonny Howson\'s cross was a fitting goal to win any match. Mind you, there were lots of hearts in mouths moments before we could finally celebrate the three points. But we are off now and up and running, so lets see where it can take us. It was a tense and error strewn opening half hour for as we all knew only too well that ....
