Boro Break Down Burton

Boro cruised to victory over Burton last night with a 2-0 victory that flattered the visitors. It was a brace for Britt Assombalonga, his first goals for Boro and really should have been a first hat trick. We had the points in the bag well before Burton’s Akpan was sent off mid-way through the second half. There was even opportunity for Traore to come on and show his dribbling skills in a night of dominance for Boro. It was a warm August evening, Boro fans flocking to the Riverside in ....

Boro Get Off The Mark

A Rudy Gestede goal got Garry Monk’s Boro off the mark at the Riverside but we maybe rode our luck over a disallowed late equaliser for Sheffield United. Boro won the tea time kick off to get the home campaign off to the best possible start. There were two selection surprises in store for Boro fans. Garry Monk had been tight lipped over a training ground injury to new forward Martin Braithwaite that looks to have ruled him out for up to 6 weeks. Rudy Gestede took full advantage of his ....

Boro Struggle In The Company Of Wolves

Pre-season favourites Boro failed to live up to their billing falling to defeat away at Wolves in the season opener. It was always going to a tough start as both clubs have new managers and have spent big. A sold-out Molineux spoke of great expectations from both sets of fans. Yet for all the big investment it was a mistake that settled our fate. Boro fans have been floating on a bubble of confidence strengthened by each big money signing landed by new boss Garry Monk. That bubble wasn’t ....

Boro Overcome Augsburg For Friendly Win

A list minute goal by Adam Forshaw clinched a final friendly victory for Boro this afternoon at the Riverside. Boro had to come from behind after Augsburg struck after only a minute of play. It was summer signing Martin Braithwaite that equalised in the first half. Then new signing Ashley Fletcher broke away and squared for Forshaw to finish the match in winning style. Boro fans enjoyed seeing the new look team and there was plenty of applause for the man at the helm, Garry Monk. Ben Gibson ....

Boro Finnish Off By Taming Stags

It wasn’t exactly the start Garry Monk had been aiming for at Field Mill but Boro came back to even things and spent the second half camped in their opponents half. Boro went 2 goals down against Mansfield Town but a thundering finish by young Finnish winger Soisalo and a header by England Under 20 starlet Dael Fry meant it ended with honours even. Boro fielded a squad sprinkled with youth at the home of the Oldest Professional Football Ground in the World, as was proudly proclaimed from ....

Chelsea 3 Boro 0, Relegation , And Questions To Be Asked

Soccer fans around the world welcome a “must-win” game for their team, especially at the end of the season, but I was nevertheless stunned to hear that Boro had sold all 1,400 tickets for the Chelsea game. On the way to the ground on the tube, I read the bad news about Boro’s record v Chelsea  in the London ‘Evening Standard’ – eg 18 matches since we last won at Stamford Bridge (2 -1 in 1975), currently 7 wins in-a-row for Chelsea and without them ....

A Bridge Too Far

A sad, sad night for Boro fans as a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea relegated us back to the EFL. Stamford Bridge proved a bridge too far as in a game where we had to get a result we were outclassed by the title-toting Blues. There were moving scenes at the end of the game as Steve Agnew waned the entire back room and playing staff over to the fans. Some, including Adam Clayton were clearly in bits. They had given their all but in the end we came up short on the night as well as the campaign. As Boro ....

The Real Middlesbrough Came To The Premier Party At Last

It was a magnificent performance as we came so close to achieving the impossible, a victory over Champions League Man City. I say impossible because this has been a season where we have rarely looked like defeating anyone but how we gave it a go against Pep\'s City. But for a dodgy penalty and the defence switching off 5 minutes from time a win and a miracle escape might have been on. But let\'s not take anything away from easily our best performance and most exciting game of the whole ....

Cherries Blow Boro Away

It takes five hours to drive back from Bournemouth and it seemed like a lifetime after Saturday\'s public humiliation.I wrote this match report in the immediate after math of that shocking game and whilst psyching myself up for the long drive home and following that match surely the even longer road back to a top flight return. Four goals, one sending off and that isn\'t even the half of it. AFC Bournemouth almost ran us into the sea. Afterwards you had to wonder when exactly we would ever be ....

No Easter Miracle But Plenty Of Boro Pride

There was no Easter revival for Middlesbrough but what a performance we gave. The Riverside was rocking when Negredo equalised at the start of the second half and so were Arsenal for the next 10 minutes as Boro went all out for that essential but elusive win. The Gunners eventually seized back the lead and the points but Boro had given their all. Defeat effectively ended our last slim chance to escape the drop. But if you are going down, go down fighting. Boro certainly gave everything ....

Boro\'s Last Chance Slips Through The Net

... Or rather our last chance evaded the net. When Lowton twice cleared off the line from Downing’s free kick and then Ayala’s header that was the final death knell of Boro’s Premier survival hopes. Once again we were unable to score. An all too familiar story in this troubled campaign. How nice would it have been to have beaten Burnley, Sean Dyche, Joey Barton and all.. Still, our real hopes of avoiding relegation had already gone at Hull. Today was more about enjoying ....

Hull Heartbreak

Crestfallen Boro fans walked out of KCOM Stadium last night and into the night of reality. Championship reality. The fans gave their all, the players did too. We made a superb start with Negredo firing home, only to crumble in a first half deluge of Hull goals. There was hope renewed through De Roon\'s goal on half time but after the break the legs had gone and we were swept away, Harry Maguire\'s header the final blow. After seven years of torment Boro reached the Premier League yet in later ....

To Swansea Needing Points

The deep pessimism over our league position and lack of form which has arguably affected every Boro fan worldwide has suddenly eased with the appointment of “change agent” Steve Agnew as manager and it is a real plus that Steve has been able to attract Joe Jordan as his assistant. Then, this week, Jonathan Woodgate has been appointed as our head coach. Middlesbro – born “Woodie” has already been a classy player and dressing room influence in our ....

Defeat But There Was Hope.

Boro fell to yet another defeat today but what a fight we made of it. The 3-1 scoreline greatly flattered Man United. Up to that unfortunate slip by Victor Valdez we might so easily have taken a draw. Jose Mourinho was a relieved man as he jumped for joy with Valencia’s injury time tap in clincher. We are now 5 points from safety with only ten games to go but there is at least a glimmer of hope to cling to now. I am in no way intending to have a go at Aitor Karanka. The man from the ....

No Cheer In Boro\'s Cup Demise To Manchester City

Boro\'s Wembley cup dream was ended when we were outclassed and defeated by an imperious Manchester City. So often in the past a nemesis for City, Boro\' s chances of repeating past glories were dealt a blow to the heart when Silva scored inside three minutes. We did still have a go but once again we were unable to really throw off the shackles and mount any sustained attacks. A fourth successive home tie and it was a full house for a big cup occasion, a Quarter Final against ....

One Foot Back In The Championship

Storm clouds gathered over the Bet365 Stadium as Boro fell to a devastating defeat at Stoke. In a game where we desperately needed a result Boro were comfortably beaten 2-0. Our slide that began at Christmas time has now seen us dumped into the relegation places. Judging by today\'s performance there is little hope of it ending anytime soon. Sad times indeed. This is my blog written straight after the defeat at Stoke begins. I wtrote this with the sound of booing for Aitor Karanka but ....

Eagles Send Boro Close To Cliff Edge

It was the big relegation 6 pointer that neither team could afford to lose but van Aanholt\'s first half goal for Palace leaves Boro floundering in deeply troubled waters. Palace went into this game on the crest of a phenomenal slump. A Boro win would have made it a crisis for Allardyce and his team. But we really let them off the hook. Boro started slowly but were set-up to keep it tight. I was clock watching from almost the start counting my chickens that a 0-0 could be a useful point. Yet ....

Boro Escaped To Victory

Boro escaped to victory v battling Oxford and landed a home Quarter Final draw with either Man City or Huddersfield as reward. That makes a fourth straight home draw at the Riverside. Boro will be really Up For The Cup again come the weekend of March 11th. What a FA Cup Quarter Final in prospect them against either former Champions Man City or Adam Clayton\'s old Terriers Huddersfield Town. You can almost smell the cost of Wembley drinks as a semi final date beneath the arch is now ....

Boro Hold Everton And Could So Nearly Have Won

Living in Manchester for the past 20 years hasn’t weakened my love for Boro, despite having both 0ld Trafford and The Etihad just down the road, and my philosophy of especially supporting them when things aren’t going too well swung into action on Saturday with a trip up to see the Everton game. Torrential rain , freezing temps and a biting wind didn’t put off the 31,000 of us, including good away support, and the atmosphere was great. Boro’s solitary four ....

The Heat Is On

January ended with Boro battling to a draw at home with a well drilled West Brom but there is no doubt now that we are in a real scrap for our Premier lives. Have we got the stomach and maybe just as importantly the resources and talent to keep our heads above the whirl pool? Yesterday\'s farcical end to the transfer market on the same night as a league programme has left us with so many Premier concerns. This is my blog written straight after the game last night. In my gloom I forgot about ....

Stewy Starred In Cup Victory

Boro went through to the 5th round stage of the FA Cup thanks to a superb Stewy Downing goal seeing off off Accrington Stanley on Saturday. It was a Man of the Match performance reminding the manager that he has an experienced Premier League player in his squad that could and should have an important role to play this season. Here is my match report written for itv.com straight after the game. It is a very busy couple of days now for Boro with lots of distractions from the immediate ....

Irons Put Boro Nearer Relegation Fire

In a huge game for Boro, Andy Carroll proved too hot to handle, helping himself to a brace as West Ham heaped misery on Middlesbrough with a 3-1 defeat. It had been end to end in the first half with two teams really going for it but Carroll’s second right on half time proved our undoing after we had come back so strongly with a Stuani goal cancelling out Carroll’s unopposed header from a corner. The third goal was a late, late breakaway as Boro chased the game and even then it took ....

An Emotional Day At Watford

Boro v Watford was overshadowed by the death of Watford legend Graham Taylor. There were tributes before and during the game observed by both sets of fans to one of football\'s real gentlemen. It was very emotional day indeed. This was my blog written for itv.com on the Abbey Flyer Train between Watford Junction and St Albans after the final whistle at Vicarage Road. It was an emotional afternoon but it is one of those days when you feel privileged to be part of a community coming ....

Ten-man Boro Ease Past The Owls

The third round draw saw Boro paired up against Sheffield Wednesday, a side on a five-game unbeaten run and currently in sixth place in the EFL Championship. We went into the game following a bore-draw with champions Leicester City the week prior; a fixture we might have thought we deserved to win on the day. Both sides fielded strong line-ups, with the Boro making five changes to the side that faced the Foxes. Many fans expected to see new £6m signing Rudy Gestede make his first start ....

Boro Tame The Owls

Ten man Boro brushed aside Sheffield Wednesday yesterday to march on into the 4th round hat of the FA Cup. Both teams finally got up for the cup in the second half yesterday after a tepid first 45minutes. But there was more action, thrills, spills, red cards and goals to make up and entertain the near 24 000 crowd. And now we have the excitement of the 4th round draw tonight. Here is my Boro fan blog written straight after the game with nicely biased report on the refereeing and the red ....
