Middlesbrough Council is offering up two giants of Boro's history for the proposed post-Coronavirus charity match at the Riverside Stadium.

The club's former striker Mikkel Beck is organising a game between the iconic team of 1996-97 which reached two cup finals and was relegated and the Carling Cup winning team of 2004.

Already Boro legends including Juninho, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Emerson, Gaizka Mendieta and Bolo Zenden have signed up to play in the game, which will be organised for a date when it is safe to do so.

And now Middlesbrough Council is offering two more icons for the celebratory event - the giant heads of Ravanelli and Emerson first seen at the 1997 Coca Cola Cup final when Boro drew 1-1 with Leicester City.

The heads have been in storage at Middlesbrough Theatre for some time, only being brought into public on occasions including an exhibition called Trashterpiece by Teesside artist Kingsley Chapman and most recently for A Night with Bryan Robson, Gary Pallister and Clayton Blackmore - all former Boro and Manchester United players - at the theatre in March pre-lockdown.

Cllr Mieka Smiles, Middlesbrough Council's Executive Member for Culture and Communities, said: "Mikkel Beck's charity game has really caught the imagination of the Teesside public and it's clear Boro fans are really looking forward to basking in the nostalgia of those heady days of 1997 and 2004.

"The heads themselves have passed into something of Teesside folklore and became a great symbol of that point in Boro's history taking fans right back to Wembley in their heads.

"If Mikkel wants to sign up these two additions for the game, we'd be happy to take them along on behalf of Middlesbrough Council to help add to what will no doubt be a carnival atmosphere."
