Today is the launch of the annual Boro short story competition. Teesside publishers Sixth Element Publishing and Middlesbrough FC have come together for a second year to encourage and inspire you to write a short story with more than a Boro flavour.

The good folk of Sixth Element publishing said

“Missing football as much as we are? In these strange, strange times, we hope you’re all keeping safe and well, and we’d love to hear your stories of the Boro in lockdown.”

I am on board again as a judge, along with Yvonne Ferguson Supporter Services at MFC and Dave Brown, manager of WH Smiths Teesside Park.

Last year all the winners saw their stories pride of place in a Little Book of Boro published for the Christmas book stampede. It was so successful it was reprinted. There were also really nice prizes from Middlesbrough FC. Definitely worth your while entering.

We’re looking for short stories of up to 3,000 words, based in and around Middlesbrough Football Club, the Riverside Stadium, or indeed Ayresome Park.

The stories could be fiction, true life or creative fiction and there are two age categories under and over 16s.

The judges’ twenty favourite stories will be published in paperback anthologies to be produced by Sixth Element Publishing later this year. All shortlisted writers will receive a copy of the book their story appears in.

Deadline is midnight August 31st 2020 – so plenty of time to get those creative juices flowing.
