A VIRTUAL Local History Month has now been launched with a full programme of online activities to enjoy during lockdown.

This month was due to herald the annual Middlesbrough Local History Month as well as the first ever instalment for Stockton.

However due to the Coronavirus outbreak the month-long programme events had to be cancelled - but with a little ingenuity the show will go on!

At incredibly short notice organisers have managed to pull a full programme of events together as one joint Middlesbrough-Stockton Local History Month to take place online.

Among the events to look forward to are virtual tours of places such as the William Lane Foundry - the oldest in Middlesbrough – a virtual tour of Stockton's Oxbridge Cemetery. Every Thursday at tea time we hear actual voices taking us back to the early years of the last century in the Rediscovered Voices of Teesside. There is also a feature on the area's contribution to the Spanish Civil War.

Other items will include published blogs on the history of Middlesbrough's art collection, the drinking dens of St Hilda's and the Battle of Boldon as well as performances, live Q&As and shared historical photos.

There will be regular updates from Tees Archives during the month and many more surprises with everything published on the Discover Middlesbrough and Stockton Libraries Facebook pages.
