Middlesbrough’s players are providing 1,000 food parcels for distribution across the Teesside area.

The squad have come together to show their support for the local community by funding the cost of the food parcels to help those hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Boro skipper George Friend said: “We spoke as a group last week about how we could help. We’ve been speaking to a number of our elderly and vulnerable fans, but we wanted to do more to help people in a time of need.

“We’ve spoken about the strength of community here and the spirit of Teesside and as players and as a club we feel it is important that we can play a part in supporting the people of the area.”

The club has linked in with the MFC Foundation, who will be assisting the managing and distribution of the parcels, and Middlesbrough Foodbank, which already has three permanent foodbanks on site at the Riverside.

Helena Bowman, head of the MFC Foundation, said: “It’s a great gesture by the players, and we can’t thank them enough for their support. They understand the importance of community, and the role that both they and the football club have across our area.”

MFC Foundation are being joined by a number of volunteers from the club’s staff, and in addition to the 1,000 donated food parcels, projects are ongoing with local authorities around the region, with the aim being to support those most affected by the current crisis.

In addition to contacting fans, head coach Jonathan Woodgate and his players also took part in a Middlesbrough Council-led initiative asking people to ensure they stay home and follow government advice, and have made a number of personal donations and offers of support to various good causes and charities throughout the region.
