Christmas and New Year can be a difficult time for many alone with troubles when everyone appears to be celebrating around about. Spare a thought, please and perhaps take a minute to contact those that may be in need. We have lost far too many good people lately, gone too soon, having taken their own lives.

TALK TODAY is a brand new person to person service offering a friendly ear and then following up to try to tackle the root of the problem. You may know the name from tshirts worn by fundraisers on matchdays at the Riverside Stadium.

Damian from Talk Today, a part of Middlesbrough Life Services met me recently to let me know how they are building a support network through Middlesbrough and beyond to reach out and help.

He told me there are 28 men a year taking their own lives in the UK and sadly the north east and especially Middlesbrough has become a real hot spot. There have been at least male four suicides on Teesside over the past six months alone. We need to do something about that. Often men between 18 and 40 are finding it especially tough.

Contact Talk Today and they will reply. Later that day or the next day will be in contact again and try to arrange a meeting to chat. It could be at a café, over a pint at a pub, in a gym or in a room especially set aside at the Riverside Stadium. Middlesbrough Football Club are right behind this initiative and you can now go to the Boro ground to help you Talk Today.

“We have got a chat group where we meet at Middlesbrough Football Club every two weeks,” Damian told me. “It is a five hour drop in window where anybody can turn up at any point. To match that as well we have got the Saturday group, which is dads and kids and that is at the Language Centre, 12-3pm. We have got a text service and also the designated meeting points dotted around Boro as well as group chats and drop in centres.”

They will later try and help by enlisting an expert on whatever issue is really the root cause of the problem.

First things first if you need help contact Talk Today UK via their facebook, instagram or snapchat – there is always someone there to respond and listen.

Talk Today so we can talk tomorrow.
