The Wedding Present

plus support tbc

Base Camp

7pm - 11pm

80’s indie-rock icons, The Wedding Present, mark the 30th anniversary of their major label debut album, Bizzaro with a string of headline shows that heads to Middlesbrough’s Base Camp on Saturday 14 December!

The Wedding Present have had eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles… not bad for a band that has, from its inception, stubbornly refused to play the record industry’s game.

That was back in 1985 when David Lewis Gedge boarded a National Express coach in London with 500 records packed into a pair of his mother's suitcases. In this fashion, the debut single GO OUT AND GET 'EM BOY! was collected from the pressing plant, delivered to the distribution company, and The Wedding Present was born. That pioneering spirit has been at the core of the band's philosophy ever since. From GEORGE BEST, "an unmitigated delight" [NME], the first full-length release on their own Reception Records onwards, the band has charted an appealing, if often eccentric, course of its very own.

“The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Era. You may dispute this, but I’m right and you’re wrong!” John Peel.

Amelia Coburn (plus support)

Today's Price:
£16 + £0.10 booking fee

Since being nominated for the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards in 2017, Teesside's very own Amelia Coburn has been busy but maybe not in quite the way you'd imagine.

Yes, she played the Cambridge Folk Festival. Yes, she has played across Europe in her own right and at ukulele and folk festivals. Yes, Mark Radcliffe invited her to play a very select stage at Knutsford Music Festival. Yes, she supported and performed on stage with Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel. Twice. And. yes, she was invited to not only play at The Wedding Present curated At The Edge of The Sea festival AND then supported the band at their packed Paris date in 2018.

Perhaps more importantly though, for her development as surely one of the country's most distinctive musical voices, she has been travelling and living in France, Mexico and, by the time she returns for this event, Russia as part of her language studies. Exposure to these cultures has already made its way into the clutch of new songs she has written which, while drifting across folk, jazz and latin-pop, sees her unique ear for an original melody, playfulness and use of THAT voice intact.

She will, no doubt, still be presenting her inimitable interpretations of artists as diverse as Kate Bush, Bowie and The Specials and may have a surprise guest and instrument or two but this is, in many ways, the start of phase two for Amelia where she continues to develop her own original musical world and aims to take you to a really magical place. Be there.
