A Certain Ratio (40th Anniversary)

Georgian Theatre

£21 adv

A CERTAIN RATIO – who celebrate their 40th anniversary this year - have shared details of a new box set, ACR:BOX, out on Mute on 3 May 2019 on vinyl, CD and digitally. ACR:BOX launches with a brand new acoustic version of ‘Won’t Stop Loving You’ (AKA The Big E) here titled ‘W.S.L.U.’, a recent collaboration with Parent’s Sarah Brandwood-Spencer (string arrangement) and Jason Brown (additional guitars).

A Certain Ratio embraced the ethic and culture of the late seventies post-punk explosion, but sounded like nothing else around them and refused to fit in. Highlighted recently by FACT, who said: “Their dub-infused punk-funk recordings have proved massively influential over the past thirty years, and Andy Weatherall has called them his favourite ever band (a prestigious accolade in our estimation)”, the band have influenced generations of musicians - from LCD Soundsystem, Happy Mondays, Franz Ferdinand, ESG, Factory Floor and Sink Ya Teeth.

Five albums were released on Factory – The Graveyard and the Ballroom (1979), To Each…(1981), Sextet (1982), I’d Like To See You Again (1982) and Force (1986). Following the release of Force, the band moved to A&M for two releases - Good Together (1989) and acr:mcr (1990) and, after the leaving the major, released Up In Downsville (1992) and Change the Station (1997) on Robs Records, the label set up by New Order’s manager and Factory’s director, Rob Gretton, an important catalyst in the Manchester scene.

Their sound is not easily pigeon holed and their influence can never be understated. The band introduced the avant-garde elements of funk, jazz, electronics, tape loops and technology to the pop song, wrapping it in a post punk aesthetic, adding great clothes and the coolest haircuts.

Two very talented duos with a tremendous sense of fun.

Steve Skinner has a background in musical theatre, having managed a theatre company and toured the country with musical reviews such as The Cuts Show and the Third World Road Show.

Steve is an experienced songwriter, including comedy and satire, as featured in his solo album ‘Spend, Spend, Spend’.

As a guitarist, he took up flamenco 10 years ago, and also writes and arranges for the world music band, Fusion.

Sandra Twitchett (T’witch) has a classical training, currently being a member of the Huddersfield Choral Society, and has a passion for British folk and rock music. T’witch has an excellent ear for sound production and harmonies, which contributes to the distinctive Skinner & T’witch sound.

She has previously recorded an album of songs from the folk/rock canon, ‘Tales’ by T’witch & The Woodman, with The Woodman, Mike Jordan. The album is available as a CD or digital download.

Gaynor Wilson is a singer songwriter originally from Ashton under Lyne, now living in Saddleworth. Gaynor plays both violin and piano although she is best known as a singer with a powerful stage presence that commands the full attention of her audience. Vetiver (solo)

Old Cinema Launderette, Durham

£16 adv

“Closing out this year with my first time touring solo, in the UK. Couldn’t’ be more excited for you to hear the songs the way I heard them when I initially wrote them."

Vetiver – FOLK.

The San Fransisco star Andy Cabic's just released his superb new record ‘Up On High’ and in something of a rarity he’s going to be touring it over with what will be his first ever shows performing solo.

In something of a rarity, the upcoming dates will see Andy Cabic taking to the stage without the accompaniment of his backing band, as he performs tracks from his latest record and highlights from his growing repertoire.

Cabic's music has also been featured in numerous TV commercials, including an original song for Birds Eye.[14] He also works as a composer, including the documentary The Family Jams[15] and the film Smashed, which was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012

Andy has worked on the No.1 best-selling Paul Weller album Sonik Kicks, as well as 5 other Top 10 albums. The Moons have had 3 critically acclaimed (Mojo****) Top 30 Albums in the UK Independent chart and have supported the likes of The Stone Roses, Beady Eye, Ocean Colour Scene and The Zombies.

Support comes from rising star Eve Conway fresh from her BBC Maida Vale session.
