A project to help bring communities together and provide young people with constructive activities to get involved in has just been re-launched in the Hemlington area of Middlesbrough.

The Hemlington Kicks project is part of the nationwide PL Kicks programme and Boro’s Hayden Coulson dropped into the Hemlington Recreation Centre (Muga) to help coach young footballers from the area and show his support for the initiative.

Thirteen has been working with the MFC Foundation to help young people in Hemlington get involved in positive activities and Hemlington Kicks uses football to bring people together and work with youngsters to build safer, stronger, more respectful communities.

More than 40 young people attended previous events in Hemlington and it is hoped that following the project’s re-launch, even more people will get involved.

Claire Gittins from Thirteen, said: “We’ve been involved in organising activities for children in the area for a while now and though lots of them have been taking part, we’re hoping that even more can come along to events in future.

It’s a great way for young people to keep fit, make new friends and have something more interesting and constructive to do, all of which will help make Hemlington an even better place to live.”

MFC Foundation’s Kicks Co-ordinator and Coach Mentor, Liam Watson said: “Our aim is to help inspire youngsters, to give them confidence, not just in football, not just on the Muga, but to take that confidence into their lives and realise they can make difference in a positive way.

We know we share many of the same values as Thirteen, they also want to make a difference. It was good to work together.

I’d like to thank Hayden for his time too, I know him being there and getting involved was appreciated by everyone.”
