Boro fan and former Match of the Day editor Paul Armstrong has written a superb book about his years at the BBC. The voice in the ear of MoTD presenters Des Lynam and Gary Lineker, Paul spans the years from when the Beeb was the national tv window on all sport through Grandstand, Sportsnight, Match of the Day and so, so much more.

He reveals how before the advent of multi channels and red buttons, someone would have to make the decision to switch between the Test Match and the 3.30 at Newmarket. One incredible passage shows a stand off between the Match of the Day team and London-based programmers wanting to curtail coverage of the FA Cup final extra time to screen Dr Who on time.

The eye witness account of Hillsborough is so poignant at a time when justice is finally being served to the families of the 96.

Paul has now emerged from the editors truck, his view on countless world and domestic sporting events. He is enjoying his retirement watching Boro home and away. Or should that be enduring?

A fascinating book written with clarity, wit, entertainment and a bitter reality /pessimism ingrained

from all that Boro watching. A real insight and a joy to read.

Behind the scenes but making the edit for the watching world. But why were we always last on Match of the Day, Paul? Something the editor got in the ear from not just Boro but fans of so many team’s fans. If only we were so lucky to be on last.
