Last week Middlesbrough confirmed that Stewart Downing, Dimi Konstantopoulos, Andy Lonergan and John Obi Mikel are almost certain to leave before next season. That would mean that we have enjoyed the final appearance of Academy star graduate, Stewart Downing in a red Boro shirt. In his long career he has often polarised opinion at Boro, especially so in his second spell. It is these differing opinions that have inspired Boro poet Jimmy Flynn to write a tribute to the winger.

Stewy Downing flew out of the Middlesbrough's Academy and set a high bar for those to follow in his wake. Now 34 he has been proud to play for his hometown club and even pull on the captain's armband. He has picked up a total of 35 caps for England including a place in the 2006 World Cup squad.

Stewy will always be remembered for his scintillating appearances in our two European campaigns, culminating in that incredible double comeback in quarter and semi final and the cross for the winning goal v Steaua Bucharest.

Sit in any stand at the Riverside and you will hear both praise and poison towards Stewart Downing and that his moved Jimmy Flynn to pen this poem about a man he sees as hero and certainly not zero.

Stewart Downing Boro's Marmite Man

No footballer footballer polarises opinion like this player can
Supremely talented, with perfect balance and poise
Sections of fans, he inexplicably annoys
The sight of him settling on the ball
Invariably signals an outcry of derisory catcalls
What is the reason for this myopic abuse
For such verbose vitriol, there is no excuse
What do they see, in their mind's eye
That prompts them to elicit, such a negative outcry
Is it his perceived, laconic attitude they detest
Do they believe, he does not always give of his best
Does his style, silky smooth, effortlessly deceptive
Sail over the heads of the less perceptive
How can a player who gives his considerable all
Continually a short sighted minority appal
Perhaps they should wear, the same soccer spectacles as me
Then a rose coloured, multi talented, footballer they would see
Flying winger, Stewart Downing, dedicated professional, non clowning
Flummoxing full backs, leaving them frowning
Whether hugging the line, staying out wide
Or dropping deep and cutting inside
Comfortable on both flanks, left or right
When in full flow an awesome sight
Gliding past opponents like a falcon in flight
Changing direction like a bat in the night
Delivering crosses of varying, velocity and height
Blessed with a first touch like an angels kiss
Qualities his detractors continue to miss
Stewart Downing Boro's Marmite Man
No footballer polarises opinion like this player can.
