Ever since I was a boy I have been fascinated by Don Revie – a product of the North East, he would become a celebrated Footballer of Year, master tactician and legendary league-winning manager. Undoubtedly one of the greats of the game, I am in the process of researching a new book exploring his life.

Every football fan knows about Revie’s great Leeds United side and of his trials and tribulations as England manager, what’s often overlooked is how he got there and where he grew up.

It was these questions and more that brought me to his birthplace Middlesbrough, a month ago. Meeting up with ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ editor, Rob Nichols and Local MP, Andy McDonald, I spent an enjoyable afternoon walking the same streets where Revie kicked a ball of rags around as a boy.

Born in 1927, his first clubs, Newport Boys and Middleborough Swifts, sadly no longer exist so I am keen to speak to anyone with any information about either club or Bill Sanderson, who ran the Swifts. Or perhaps you or relative have a recollection of Don Revie himself?

My personal email is and I would love to hear from you.
