So close but not to be. For a few minutes in the second half Boro fans were dancing with joy at the prospect of a second successive play off finish to the season. Word soon spread like wildfire around the New York Stadium that West Brom had taken a lead at Derby. With Boro 2-0 up Boro fans were having a play off party. This was thanks to a Britt penalty goal. Things got better when John Obi Mikel blasted into the roof of the net from a corner. With Leeds losing at Ipswich there was every incentive for WBA to overhaul them and avoid Villa in the play off two legger.

But then the afternoon turned. Rotherham fans with precious little to celebrate in this relegation season cheered as news broke Derby had scored. It was confirmed by a goal alert on the big screen, which brought more cheers. Then seemingly moments later Derby got a penalty and the same scenario repeated. Party over.

It was a good performance by Boro to finish the season with a win. Britt and Fletcher missed a few sitters before they combined for Britt to be felled for a spot kick. He despatched it was ease and then had a perfect opportunity to score again straight after. No stress, on that front at any rate, as Mikel sealed the deal.

Rotherham did hit back late doors with a penalty but that came after Boro had probably lost a little heart, the players obviously picking up on the mood that things were not going our way down in Derby.

Obviously the real damage was done elsewhere. Those six straight wins. The defeat at Forest. Or even the fine margins of the Leeds equaliser after a 100 minutes of injury time.

So, that is it for the season. No play offs. No promotion. Much dissent. But now to time to regroup and think through the assault for next time. Much thinking time will be needed.

But for now, it is good time from me. Good time from Boro. Is it good bye from Pulis?

Bye Bye

As always Up The Boro

Rotherham United 1-2 Middlesbrough - Britt, Mikel
