Merry Christmas everyone – Boro hope to serve up some festive football this afternoon as we go head to head with Sheffield Wednesday. Can we build on George Friend's fine finish at Reading and make it a Christmas feast for every Boro fan? There is going to be a big crowd in today so remember to get down early to savour the special atmosphere and perhaps pause to purchase a fanzine first. Kick off 3pm.

Boxing Day the special Christmas sports day and always a very special atmosphere with sparkling jumpers and brand new Boro shirts and santa hats. And that is just on the team bench.. ho ho ho.

Talking of atmosphere it was anything but festive last time we were at the Riverside. We were all left so flat and floored by cup defeat to Burton. OH HE HAD TO MENTION IT, DIDN'T HE.. But we struck back down at Reading with a captain's knock from George Friend. He faced the music from the fans as always after the quarter final and took the abuse from so many quarters of the Riverside. I wonder if any of those fans that flicked the Vs were singing his name, to GOLD and cheering along with George at the end of match celebrations at the Madejski?

I would never be so spiteful at Christmas. Me, certainly not.

Today we attempt to do the double over the Owls. We managed a win and a home draw last campaign. Last season's pre Christmas fixture saw both managers dismissed. Sheff Wed have already jumped the gun with Jos Luhukay, the man with the “interesting” moustache dismissed before last Saturday's game. Steve Bruce is hotly tipped for the vacant chair after his Christmas holiday. Wednesday are also up for sale. For all those that have wished we could see an exchange of ownership at the Riverside please kindly look at the record of the clubs that play at Hillsborough and Madejski. It is not all rosy in the big, bad, wild world out there.

Boro's Mo Besic enjoyed his best outing of the season at Hillsborough and a return to that type of form today would be very welcome indeed. As would another goal from Britt Assombalonga. He can tap in as in South Yorkshire if he wants. But a repeat of the scorcher v Blackburn would certainly light up the Boxing Day fixture.

Talking about blazing shots lets hope former Boro player Adam Reach has left his shooting boots at home this time round. His early season form was outstanding and of course he did shoot Wednesday back into the game against us at Hillsborough, though we held on that time.

Ryan Shotton scored the winner in Garry Monk's final game away at Wednesday last season but will be missing following his knee injury at Reading. We hope he won't be out too long as he has been outstanding of late. But his replacement Paddy McNair served up the kind of attacking threat down the flank that we have been long hoping for since his signing from Sunderland. Let's hope he can continue that threat today.

Stewart Downing, rested at Reading can come back in to offer added creativity to the squad. Forestieri will be out for Wednesday but Barry Bannon back in midfield.

Come on down to the Riverside, Boro fans and lets have a Christmas special this afternoon. The fanzine is on sale around the ground and how about a serving of our podcast too.
