I produced these pen pics for today's match day programme, Boro v Birmingham. Actually it was my error, I ended up answering some questions instead. Some of which were superseded by Garry Monk taking over at Brum. But I thought you might be interested to read what I knocked together for the Birmingham fans as an intro to Boro. Written just before setting out for Boro v Leeds.

Darren Randolph – if you can't beat him sign him... |Birmingham fans know all about Darren. The Irish international stopper constantly frustrated Boro at St Andrews and then went on to do it in the Premier for West Ham. Seems to have a Mr Gadget style telescopic arm that suddenly extends to thwart shots spearing into the corner of the goal.

Ryan Shotton –  tough tackling, hard working centre back converted to right back by Tony Pulis. Has quickly become a firm crowd favourite. Likes to scatter towels around the pitch perimeter for his long throws. Victor in a tv Bake Off against George Friend.

George Friend – always committed left back who likes to maraud forward. Friend of the Community at Boro. He studied a journalism degree and has made tv documentaries but burnt the cakes when the other side of the lens.

Dani Ayala – towering defender nearly the first name on Aitor Karanka's promotion team sheet and first name in the popular Karanka/La Bamba fan chant of the time. Has a penchant for headers and scores plenty of goals as well as keeping them out.

Ben Gibson – classy young centre back made the full England squad last season but stayed loyal to his hometown club and the club his uncle owns. Famously didn't take his Boro shirt off for 24 hours after we won promotion. Ben is an official ambassador for Teesside Hospice.

Grant Leadbitter – inspirational skipper, midfield enforcer and penalty taker. Would run through brick walls for the cause and when injured last season his rehab included a daily swim in the local reservoir. Not soft.

Mo Besic – new loan signing from Everton. Bosnian international midfielder. His hard work has paid off with an instant impact in the Boro side. Man of the Match for many away at rivals Sunderland something that sets him in good stead to become a fan favourite.

Adam Clayton – signed as an attacking midfielder from Huddersfield he was remoulded into a Yorkshire terrier at Boro. A real warrior, Clayton was sporting a beard before Mumford and Sons lost their razors.

Jonny Howson – experienced Leeds and Norwich midfielder signed last summer by then manager Garry Monk – took some time to win over the fans. Eventually his counter attacking style resulted in assists and even goals. Currently battling Mo Besic for a starting berth.

Stewart Downing – former England winger – and forever idolised as a hero of Boro's European run to UEFA CUP final in 2006. Saw service at Aston Villa (shhh!), Liverpool and West Ham before returning home.

Adama Traore – once of Barcelona and err.. Aston Villa (sorry to swear). Officially reprieved from a red card last week under Tony Pulis his searing pace and power now have an end product. So beware! Surely the fastest player in the Championship and one of the most exciting footballers I have ever seen in my 55 years.

Patrick Bamford – former Chelsea loan star has seized the opportunity at centre forward presented by Rudy Gestede's season-ending injury. A brace against local rivals Sunderland was like a flash back to his 17 goal top scorer campaign in 2014/15. Not one to blow his own trumpet but he probably could as he is a talented musician as well as multi-linguist.

Britt Asombalonga – the former Posh and Nottingham Forest goal getter made a storming start to his Boro career hammering home 11 goals before even November was out. Sadly he has lost his scoring mojo since and Tony Pulis is still waiting to see the True Britt re emerge.
