Boro will play Sunderland in the 3rd round of the FA Cup at the Riverside. It is amazing just how many times we come out of the hat together. The 3rd round ties will be played between 5th and 7th January 2018.

This wasn’t the only derby game; Liverpool v Everton should be interesting.

Two East Midland clubs will be vying for a giant-killings when Derby travel to Old Trafford for Man Utd v Derby, while Arsenal will face a real examination at the City Ground, Nottingham Forest.

Back to the Boro v Sunderland match. It brings back memories for the older amongst us of the 1970s. Boro wearing blue and black striped shirts. Boro getting not one but two penalties and Boro gunslinger penalty taker, John Hickton, taking the longest run up imaginable. He almost started in the General Hospital car park. By the time he squared up to the penalty spot the Sunderland (reserve) keeper must have been scared stiff. Which was the idea of course. Big John said he would hit the ball hard but accurately with the inside of his foot.

Sunderland have not enjoyed recent visits to the Riverside though this season’s 1-0 win was an extremely close affair. If Darren Randolph hadn’t denied Lewis Grabban with a point blank save at the start Boro might not have had the luxury of defending Tavernier’s near post flicked goal.

Roll on the New Year then and a big cup tie atmosphere down by the Riverside.
