It has been a timely pause for Boro having an international break. Sometimes these pauses for international qualifiers can be a qualified disaster for the club rather than country. Not this time though. After a pretty disastrous week for Boro in which the wheels were all but starting to fall off the pause button could not have been more-timely for Garry Monk and Boro. I discuss this and far more on a special international break fmttm podcast.

Alex Lewczuk, Southside Broadcasting anchorman and .. cough.. Man City fan and myself chew the cud about Boro’s recent fall from grace and favour and question just whether Garry Monk can start to put us back on course again at Barnsley.

Two matches ago I was prepared to go on record saying the fight we had shown at Fulham, Aston Villa and QPR was just the kind of attitude and application that would see us move on up into a promotion challenge. After the draw at Craven Cottage I was confident that we were seeing a team spirit being forged that would end up with us being major contenders in the short term and an automatic promotion finish at the end of the season.

Then came Norwich, surely a blip. But there was no reaction against Brentford, in fact quite the reverse. All the old failings of slow start getting slower and slower were major failings in a game when the team seemed splintered and totally out of sorts. High anxiety was leading to a crisis of confidence. Oh dear.

Anyway, we talk this through and try to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Could there be a rainbow at Oakwell. Could this international break be the pause for reflection that changes the whole course of this season?
