Garry Monk hasn’t exactly messed about in the transfer market. As we prepare for the first of this Championship campaign there look like being more comings and goings. Does this signify that Boro are deadly serious about bouncing back at the first attempt? Bernie Slaven certainly thinks so.

Boro have blown apart their transfer record to land Britt Assombalonga. It is a whole different universe away from when Bernie Slaven joined Boro for just £30 000. Yet, if Britt enjoys even a fraction of the success of the legendary striker then pundit it will be a wise investment.

I asked Bernie a couple of short questions to help us build up to the big kick off at the Riverside this Saturday evening.

Q: You know only too well how hard it is to get promotion to the Premier League. What are your thoughts on Boro's new manager and rebuilding this summer?

BS: Gary Monk is still a rookie manager but I'm sure he will man manage the players better than Aitor Karanka did. Our activity this summer has been terrific bringing in loads of attacking options and spending plenty of money. The club has made a statement of intent that we mean business this season.

Q: Who do you think might be our main rivals?

BS: There will be about 10-12 teams clambering for 2 automatic places and play offs - we will defo be in the top 6.

Q: You played at Ayresome and have been behind the microphone at some special nights at the Riverside, which one would you choose Ayresome or Riverside?

BS: Special nights for me at the Riverside must be the UEFA Cup when we trailed 3 goals on two occasions and progressed to make the Final.

Ayresome Park is special to me personally as I played my whole Boro career there - scoring goals - jumping on the Holgate + the smell of woodbine Bovril + p** are engrained up my nostrils.
